At this entrance, the river flows directly into the city and into the port market. It is in this way in which the river boats bring in the shipments of goods from other nations to sell and take back the needed supplies for their hometown. It is a heavily guarded gate with guards both above it and on either side monitoring closely all the traffic that passes through this gate, making it extremely difficult to sneak inside in this manner.

[/url]

The large barge drifted steadily towards the city of Voldar, its bulky form creaking loudly as it went. Several guards stood staring out at sea, eagerly awaiting the time when they could deliver their gift.

Standing in the middle of the barge was a huge iron cage, heavily reinforced. Standing in the center of the cage was the gift, a grand present for the new king Voltigar.

The creature stood far taller than any of the guards aboard the barge, it's height reaching over 2 1/2 peds. It's body was corded with muscle, causing it to weigh over 5 pygges, while most of the guards didn't even weigh in at 2 pygges. Many of the soldiers stared nervously at the thing's gaping, fanged jaws. It's tail swung out behind it impatiently, it's slitted green eyes gazing at each of the guards in turn. Covered in black scales, the creature's hands and feet ended in silver claws.

It wore little, a black, hooded cape trimmed in silver, and a silver pair of leather pants.

Razorclaw Blackcrawl gazed out of his confines calmly. He had been captured while he slept off the effects of his heavy drinking the night before. He had awakened to spears and blades being pressed down on his throat. Rather than causing any bloodshed, the reptile had opted for the easier way out, to allow himself to be taken prisoner. His mount, equipment, weapons, and pet Strata cat were all aboard the barge.

Razor didn't especially mind being trapped in the cage, it gave him an excellent chance to observe these humans. Though he spent most of his time with them, the creatures never ceased to amaze him. The myths of his people turned out to be true much of the time, the humans were frantic and untrustworthy. But Razor was finding that some of the warmblooded creatures were different.

The humans were just as fascinated by him as he was of them. They talked and bantered, laughing about how the king would react to his surprise. One of the guards approached Razor, staying a respectable distance.

"You like fightin' eh dragonspawn? You'll make a fine surprise for the king's tournament. Or maybe we should put you in a freak show!"

Razorclaw glared at the man. Dragonspawn! Razorclaw had long ago learned of this ridiculous human myth, which was of course completely false. Psyrpents were originated from serpents, not dragons. But the other part of the man's speech was intriguing. Razor went into thought, ignoring those around him. :Tournament? King? Is this what they plan for me? An event to glorify a king, though not my particular choice, I could have been imprisoned to do worse things:

Another soldier strode up, slapping the first one in the back of the head. "Don't tease the thing! Afterall, it's assured to be one of the most interesting things I've seen in Voldar for a while! So what's your name, lizard?"

Razorclaw drew a snake fang from his pouch, along with a vial of ink and a crumpled piece of parchment. Scribbling on it for a second, he extended it through the bars.

Warily retrieving it, the soldier eyed the note. In surprisingly neat handwriting were the words, "Razorclaw Blackcrawl."

Looking back up at the reptile, the soldier smile in amusement. "So, Razor, eh? You hungry? We've got a bit of meat left from lunch."

Sniffing the air, the reptile was awarded with a fresh scent of beef. Nodding his head eagerly, the reptile awaited his meal.

As the soldier hesitantly slid the slab of steak through the bars, Razorclaw eagerly grabbed the food. Scarfing it down in a matter of seconds, the reptile looked ahead and awaited for his arrival in a new city; preparing himself for the ridicule, jeers, and possible excitement.

River Guards

The river guards watched the barge come slowly through the first set of iron gates and then make its way up to the docking area. Already they could see the huge cage and the creature imprisoned within it. Their curiosity raised, some went down to the docks to see what it was.

The barge came closer to the dock and the guards recoiled at the sight of the creature. Some had never seen a psyperpent. They thought they were looking at a young dragon and were wondering where its wings were.

When the barge finally docked and the sailors began to rope it off, the river guards looking at one another held up their hands. "Say, what do you plan on doing with that...thing?" The head guard asked?

The captain of the barge smiled at the Head Guard. "We got ourselves a gift fer the King. What a surprise it'll be at the tournament, eh? The people'll love it, they thought that orc was odd, wait till the set eyes on this thing!"

Razor smirked at the man's comment. He was used to being viewed as an abomination, and now he was to be entertainment. Well, that's what he'd give these humans. They wanted a show, they'd get it. Curling his clawed hand into a fist, he slammed it into one of the bars, causing it to bend drastically. He then snarled for good effect, showing he was confined only because he allowed himself to be, and that he could indeed break out at any time.

"A surprise!" The guard said. "Well..."

A creak of iron being bent and a snarl made the guards jump back. Several of the crossbow men upon on the walls, loaded their weapons and aimed them at the creature. One young guard let loose his weapon in his haste but the arrow thudded in wood next to the head guard of the barge's feet.

The River guard glared up at the walls and shouted..."Hold your fire. Hold your fire." Turning back to the barge captain, "That thing, is not safe. Look at how it almost tore those iron bars out of their places. And you want to take it through the city, to the tourney grounds where there will be thousands of people and the King? You are completely insane. No, no I will not let this...this creature pass. I need to speak to someone higher up for the authority to let it pass.
What is it anyway?" He asked, staring at the creature.

"Well I'll be damn," Malgion said as he came towards the River gate in time to see the 'dragon' shake the iron cage it was held in. It was obvious that it could free itself any time it wanted, but the question was why didn't it?

Arrows were cocked and aimed at the cage and one let loose but didn't make its mark. "Well this looks like it's going to be fun. Let's take a closer look why don't we."

Jarth looked doubtful. "Do you really think we should get closer to it? What if it breaks free?"

"Well then we most likely we'll be dead." He paused and glanced at Jarth. "So are you coming?" And without looking back he moved towards the cage.

Shoulders back, head up and an amused smile as if everything was there just for his delight. Ah, the true noble face, but he still had something down to earth about him that usually put people at ease despite his noble upbringing. He was dressed in the latest fashion and did without any hat since his people were less likely to recognize him without it and the nobles all knew Lord Royl hated wearing hats, the messed up the perfection of his hair. He always thought it was funny to make them thing that.

He wanted paused some distance from the cage. He wanted to move closer but he didn't want to disturb the creature or the guards that much. But as he got within a good distance his eyes gleamed with excitement. This creature was something. He wasn't quite sure if it was indeed a miniature dragon, but it was something interesting. Very interesting.

Behind him he could hear the sound of Jarth's boots as he moved closer. His stance was sure, but Malgion could feel the tension in him as he looked on the creature. He was probably trying to figure out a way he could keep Malgion from getting eaten. That thought just made Malgion's grin grow wider.

"What a splendid creature!" He exclaimed. "Is it for the tourney? I am sure General Scar will be delighted." He moved a step closer. "Certainly nothing he can't handle."

He laughed at exactly how Damien would take him throwing around his name like that.

"Hope you don't mind me taking a closer look." He said it as he moved closer to the cage, but still keeping his distance. "Are you men having much difficulty with it?"

His eyes were glinting with the novelty of it and he would have went straight up to the bares of the cage, but rather not have the guards on his case about it. He knew it was a possibility the 'dragon' could rip his throat out, even from this distance, but he didn't particularly care. His fascination came first.

The guards on the barge just grinned at the nervousness of the others. The barge captain spoke once more. "It's not dangerous, he can clearly release himself, yet he doesn't. He's looking forward to a bit of excitement too, aren't ya lizard?" He said turning to the creature.

Razorclaw just eyed the guard, smirking slightly. His attention was caught by movement out of the side of his eye. Turning his massive head, Razor saw a sandy haired man approach. He seemed well dressed as far as he could tell, humans were so confusing with clothing. It probably meant he was important.

The man was intensely interested in him, much more so than his companion who stayed behind him. Razorclaw showed the same interest in studying the human, looking him up and down. "See," the captain said, "People love this thing!" Turning to the man, the captain answered his inquiry. "I think, good sir, that this is a psyrpent. I've never seen one, but according to the stories I've heard of the dragon spawn, this thing fits the description."

Niccoli paddled his coracle through the narrow space afforded by the various other ships and barges. As he floated up alongside the docks he pulled a length of rope out, and tied it to the prow of the tiny collapsable vessal. As he hopped up on to the top of the docks, Niccoli pulled his coracle up after him. "It's good to be back here. At least I don't have to lug this thing over land..." Niccoli patted the corracle beside him and unclipped and untied the various bits and pieces that held it together. After some hemming and hawing the coracle was wrapped tightly and tied up. Niccoli walked over to one of the guards.

Two of the guards, who were on patrol duty together, watched the new arrival as he tied up his little coracle. They glanced up to the soldiers who were on the wall, making sure that they were watching as well, just in case this stranger decided to to do anything funny.

As the stranger approached, the older of the two tapped his spear upon the ground in a business-like way, as if directing the young man's attention to him. "Ho there. Please state yer reasons for entering Voldar and please reveal any weapons that ye may have upon thy person."

As he was talking, the other guard gestured towards a small table near them, indicating that this is where the weapons would go for inspection.

"I'd be visiting some aquaintences, as it were." Niccoli reached for the visible weapon, his rapier, and drew it, placing it on the table. He reached for the sleeves of the shirt, another annoyence of comming northwards, the general lack of hospitality among seafarers up here aside. Niccoli unstraped the arm blades attached to his for arms and placed the pair on the tables as well. "If you'd be checking those for poison or some such trifling thing there'd be no need. Not a mite of poison or an sorcerous substance which would cause persons unneeded pain should I have to stick them with that." Niccoli gestured towards the weaponry on the table.

"Hey Pete we have a jokester in our midst," said one of the guards to the other.

Pete was not in a joking mood and the miserable weather was not helping his mood either and for some reason he just did not like this man.

He checked the weapons. "Name and occupation?" He asked in a gruff voice.

"We already know his occupation, Pete. Its a jokester." Nate replied.

"Knock it off, Nate. If you think he was joking then check his weapons for any kind of poison."

"Hey Pete, I was just joking myself."

"Well I am not. So check this funny guy's weapons and be quick about it. I do not want to be standing here in this rain any longer than I have to."

"Sure Pete" Nate replied. He gingerly looked at the blades of the rapier and the arm blades, which caught his curiosity as he had never seen such type weapons. He looked at the blades to see if he could see any discoloration that would point that there was something else on the blades besides metal. He could not see anything. Besides he thought to himself, if the guy did have poison on any of his weapons, he sure would not know. He had no idea what poison would look like on a weapon. Finally he spoke up. "They don't seem to be poisoned, Pete."

Pete just grunted as he waited for the man to reply to his question.

"Name and occupation?" the pair went on about the possibilities of his seriousness with regards to the poison on his weapons. Idiots... d'you actually think I'd keep the poison on the weapons?

"Jonathan Smythe. I'd be a sailor of sorts, though the last ship I was on had a spot of bad luck. It sank, and I've yet to find employ since"
Niccoli glanced at his weapons. "If you don't mind I'll be taking those back. No offence to you two fine gentlemen, but I'd rather take my chances defending myself from some of the ruffians therin than take my chances waiting for some of Voldar's finest to extricate me from any prediciments." The imsulting stress on the comment was obvious even to the guards on the walls above, some of whom chuckled to themselves.

Pete glared up at the guards on the walls and the chuckling quickly stopped. They knew that their sergant could make their lives miserable if he chose to do so.

Pete looked at the stranger. "Jonathan Smythe," he said as he wrote upon a piece of parchment. Sailor by trade." He tore off the piece of parchment and handed it to Jonathan. " I find it hard to believe that your name is Jonathan and Smythe is a real far fetch for an elf. But if you tell me that is what your name is, then that is what it is. Keep this paper with you at all times and be ready to produce it to anyone in authority. If you do not your liable to see a more depressing sight of our fair city than the dock district. Though, if you are a sailor, you should be quite at home there. If not, then I recommend Arth's Spot. It is fairly the best mid-range establisment here in Voldar. Good-bye and stay out of trouble." Pete did not even shake the man's hand, he just left.

Nate came over, and held out his hand. "Long night for the sarge. Actually he is not a bad guy once you get to know him, and his advice should be well heeded. My name is Nate by the way. Welcome to Voldar, Jonathan."

Niccoli ginerly shook the profered hand and took the piece of paper. "I know the procedure well enough thanks." Niccoli gathered his things and hoisted his coracle over one shoulder. He sauntered off past the guards and into the main city.
