Charlie was pacing back and forth anxiously, and it was a few moments before he noticed the slim figure approaching the gate. Normally, he would have flirted with her a little before letting her go through, but this time it didn't even occur to him. "Hello-and-welcome-to-Nyermersys-the-City-of-Death-what-is-your-name-and-what-brings-you-to-Nyermersys?" he asked, a tad too hastily.

The sun was high in the sky and warm on his back when Tavis, reluctantly awoke. The growing pup rose from his sleeping position and stretched lazily, his front paws extended in front of him, his right paw stopping a bit short, and his claws cutting through the soft soil. He added a large yawn, the tip of his tongue curling up and jaws parted to reveal rows of white teeth, to get the full effect of the late wake up call and flopped to the ground once more, his large head laying on his forepaws. Golden eyes looked around, avoiding the bright glare above him, and peering through the brush. He could see the road ahead and slowly stood, stretching a bit more as he moved toward the path.
He stepped out of the brush and blinked rapidly at the sudden brightness. Up ahead he could see the tall walls and buildings that he was so used to and grinned as he headed down the road toward it. He set off at a leisurely walk, slowly working the stiffness out of his joints. The sun above was close to giving him a reason to stop and just lay in the grass all day, but the city called to him. The distance melted away fairly swiftly, even at his relaxed pace. Halfway there he switched to a slow trot, growing excited with each step. When he reached a bridge he switched to a walk once more, the gate to the city was up ahead. Large paws padded softly across the bridge, landing silently.
While limping over the bridge he tried to keep his attention on the gate ahead, but in the end his curiosity won out and he hobbled over toward the edge. He swung his fore paws up onto the stones that were stacked along the edge. A large, grey and white head stuck out over the open space for a moment, looking down at the swirling waters below. He watched as the water rippled and the occasionally creature scuttled toward the surface for air. After a moment, the smell of people reached him and he turned toward his destination once more. The large gate loomed ahead, and he could see the city beyond, the buildings, people, food, people, shelter, and more people!
A tall human stood before the gate, carrying a long pointy stick. Tavis forgot what the humans called them, but it didn’t matter. Dangerous was the only thing he needed to know about it, and the gleam of the sun off the sharpened metal was enough to let him know to steer clear. His mind switched between the city that was unfolding before him and the man with the sharp stick. He looked back the other way, knowing that people came and when all the time. Tavis would just have to wait for someone to come along and distract the guard for a moment while he snuck by.
With that decision he turned back toward the edge of the bridge, looking for something to occupy him for a time. He attempted to lift himself back up to the ledge but his right paw fell short and he landed awkwardly, falling against the stones. Lips curled up in a silent snarl and he snapped at his right shoulder (missing unfortunately), trying to relieve his anger at being thwarted in his effort. After a moment he tried again, this time planting both paws firmly on the ledge. He stood there, watching the fish occasionally surface for a time before returning, watching the ripples and movement of the river, watching the small boat that was making its way slowly toward him. As the little boat passed under the bridge, Tavis pulled his paws down and raced to the other side, lifting his paws to the ledge again. He made it just in time to watch the boat come out and continue down the river. While he watched the river, he would look back at the bridge and the gate, checking to see if he could enter soon. Fish and water couldn't keep him entertained forever.

The guards at the gate glanced up the bridge. One of them called down to a second from the wall: " 'Ey Jim! Look at the stupid dog there. If 'e went any further over tha' edge 'e'd fall right into the river!" The second guard, obviously Jim, looked at the dog, and then at the halberd in his hand. " 'old that though Nort, I'll be right back." Jim quickly walked across the short length of bridge and over to the dog, put down his halberd and lifted the dog off the ground and over the edge. And then fell. Like a rock.

With his forepaws still planted on the ledge, he looked down the road away from the gate. He let out a small whimper, desperately wanting someone to come into view. People where always going into the city and he just happened to arrive during a quiet part of the day, wonderful! Tavis paid no attention to the sound of boots on stone that he could hear. The wolf-dogs mind was on the road and the sound seemed far off, beyond the gate. He wasn't aware that anything was wrong until his back paws left the ground.
His big head snapped toward what ever it was that had taken hold of him. Golden eyes fell on the man that had stood before the gate with the sharp stick that he had attempted to avoid. The man held the struggling animal for a moment, lifting him up and over the stone ledge. Tavis struggled, his hind paw coming up to kick the man in the stomach while his lip curled up in a snarl. Golden eyes avoided the open space beneath him and locked onto the man. He closed his jaws shut on the man's arm, sharp teeth digging into flesh.
Blood filled his mouth as they tumbled over the edge, refusing to give up his hold on the man. The water swiftly rose up to meet them and the dogs grip faltered as they came into contact with the water. Large paws paddled as swiftly as possibly in his moment of pain when his head was completely submerged. One of his back paws connected with something, but he didn't pay any mind. When his head came back above water, he took a deep breath.
The current carried him down the river while he paddled; feeling more of the pain in his right shoulder, but keeping above the water was all he cared about now. Tavis attempted to paddle toward the shore, but quickly learned that fighting the current was only wearing him out. He lost hope at that time and allowed himself to be pulled down the river, slowly paddling enough to keep himself afloat. Ships came into view and he paddled faster and angling toward the harbor, feeling the strain in his shoulder. The thought of not making it ever entered his mind as he pressed forward.
He reached one of the ships and pressed his left shoulder against the anchor chain while his back paws tried to grasp onto the slippery metal. One of his back paws got stuck in the chain and he struggled to free it for a moment before his left forepaw got stuck as well. He gnawed at the metal for a moment before giving up. Now he was above water and he was happy for that. He lifted his dripping muzzle to the sky and howled once before letting out a few loud barks.

Ganinon approached a fork in the road and had to decide, to the town or to the small docks that he could make out in the distance. 'Well, I came all this way to search through Nyermersys, so i might as well start there' He chose to keep going straight, toward a bridge.
In the distance to the hills rising and desending, with each step he took. To Ganinon the hills looked like small mountains. How he wished he could return back home and smith in his own home. When he came upon the bridge the city seemed so much bigger. He had been watching the hillls for some time and didn't look toward the city. When he did look it was so sudden of a change that it suprised him.
Crossing the bridge he looked up at the wall and saw a few men walking across it. They would soon notice a small figure walking toward them. They might even think he was some wierd animal at first glance. His knee starting to hurt, he stopped and said, "Oi! There be a toll for passing through here?" He waited with his hand on his money pouch. 'It can't be that much, I should be able to stay here several days without having to do much.'

Several guards were clustered around the side of the bridge, and two more seemed to have comandeered a small rowboat to check the waters for signs of their comrade, who had just slipped on his halberd and followed the dog he had intended to drown into the drink below. One of them managed to so some propriety, believing firmly in the 'I was at my post the whole time' method of blame, and followed the dwarf shortly to the gate "I'll be needing four san off you, and you'll need to follow me to get your papers." The guard motioned to the gatehouse's iron door set into the tower and walked towards it.

"I'll be needing four san off you, and you'll need to follow me to get your papers." A guard coming from behind said to Ganinon. He motioned to the doors of a tower and started to walk toward them. Ganinon quickly followed him before he was to far ahead. Following the man inside he untied his money pouch and slipped 4 sans out to give to the man. Tieing the pouch up tightly he waited for the man to say what was needed to be done.

"Right, I need, your name, amd what your purpose in the city is. And the four sans, good." The guard placed the money in a small box on the table and produced a form from a box. The money clinked very shortly after going, in the guard had obviously been doing brisk business today, with the heat and humidity driving travellers in off the roads early, the city would be bustling.

"The name's Ganinon, and my purpose is to search for someone. If you could tell me now if she is here then I would just be staying a few days to get provisions." Ganinon heard the tinkling of coins in the box. 'Tinkling of money is such a fine sound.' he thought. "So could you tell me if there is another dwarf by the name of Lumen here?" Ganinon asked.

"Sorry, I wouldn't know. If they stopped in they would have had to hand these in at the town hall. They'd have records..."
The guard stopped filling in the sheet and sealed it in an oilskin envelope. "Enjoy your stay."
@Ganinon: You've got free reign inside the city for now. You can leave if you'd like.

Ganinon started to walk back to the gate he had come in and had to ask several times for directions to the nearest gate, since he had no idea which gate he came in from. eventully he made it to the wall and saw that he was a few streets off fromt he gate. He walked over to the gate and opened the door to where he had been earlier.
When he walked in there was no one inside. He noticed the box that the money was in sitting on the table. No one was around he would probably get away with it if he did it quickly. he walked up to the box listened for any sound. He tryed to open the box but it was locked. 'I could get that with my hammer, but not here.' He took off his pack and slipped the box inside. It didn't add much to the size of his pack and most likely wouldn't get noticed. He put his pack back on and walked outside. he began to walk away from the gate, trying to look as normal as possible.
