IRC is sort of a virtual "place" (sorry, no techie explanations coming from me lol), and you have to download what they call a "client" (which is some kind of program) to access IRC. I use MiRC (link above), but have found it much easier to use Gararion's java client on his side, that way you don't have to download anything. Scroll up for the link to Gararion's page.

If you already have a messenger like ICQ, MSN etc. you might consider using Trillian from www.ceruleanstudios.com - it's free, no ads, no complicated technical things, slick design, perfect if you ask me

You can run every messenger with this single program, including IRC

Java Client: Gar's Java Client. (Compatable for all operating systems with a Java Enabled web browser.)
