Thorgas: shall we compare languages? I speak Dutch, English, Czech, French and German (in order of fluency). Ok, to be honest, the German is down to understanding when people are speaking it, but still. If youre talking about bragging... *grins*

LOL, Simonne, let's see, if I can beat you! Well, not with speaking the language, but at least those with I had to learn!

The first language I had to learn was German - for I have a terrible dialect not all my friends understood in the beginning when I went away to study. Does that count?
Then I discovered too late, that I'm bad with languages...

Valid exams in: English, Latin, French, Old Greek. Not that I could say one word in Greek anymore, never could though, needed only to be able to translate it.

I survived in south America travelling alone with my Spanish.
(Quiero una habitation con banjo et desajuno. :lol  )
I can go shopping more or less successfully in Italy.
I failed terribly with Czech (It is so easy to reach from here, but I stopped when I had great difficulties to even pronounce Na schledanou-good bye)

I started to learn Japanese and knew the right Kanshi telling me in which toilet I had to go when there was no picture showing a woman on the wall! Ha!

Well, I don't really speak all these languages, they would need definitely some derusting, but I think my French would come back soon if I only tried.

Quick question for you Thorgas, I have seen and used two seperate text phrases for goodbye in Mandarin. Which of these is proper?
1) 88
2) Zai jian
Or in casual chat does it not matter?

Most of the Chinese I know is purely from online chatting and gaming, so I am definately not fluent =). Just an effort to learn from the people around me mostly.

Women ki zhou peng you ma, Thorgas?

I would love to learn Japanese. I've learned a few (read that as very few) phrases from watching Naruto with subtitles.

I know English and only a few phrases in Spanish (had a horrible teacher), German (I can count to 10! Yay!) and some Japanese.

I speak English (fluently, I like to think) and a tiny smattering of French and Spanish. I couldn't hold a conversatoin, but I can ask where the bathroom is! I also know a few select phrases/vocab in Filipino. My mum is a native from Bohol, so she's fluent but didn't continue speaking the language to us kids. Yahrr! How I wish I could speak it!

Pleeease... if you're fluent in more than one language and have kids, speak it to them! They may not like it when they're young, but if you keep it up they will really thank you for it.

@Twen: I don't know if it matters in casual chat, but the correct form would be 'zai jian'.  I'm not sure what '88' is supposed to mean.  Some cute way of saying 'bye bye' perhaps, though the pronunciation doesn't match perfectly.

Lingua Latinae regit et alterae linguae sugitis.

(I think it would be cool if we all exchanged langauges and teach each other what we know. I have always love foreign langauges so if anyone whould like to teach me some things it would be much appriciated) Go Longhorns :thumbup

Only bad thing about that, Navar, is that sometimes it's pronounced completely different then what it looks like. I have problems with that. I learn much better hearing it and repeating it then trying to figure out what all the letters and like sound like.

Ugh, I'm so bad with languages. In Canada, it's mandatory to take French for a certain amount of time (depends per province) in English schools and is always available thereafter. I took it for 7 years and can't even hold a conversation. I can write a pretty weak story if I have a dictionary handy.

I'm grand with English, but take what I know away from me and I'm dead meat x_X

I can speak many different languages, like Indian etc. but I seem to have forgotten them. Example:
Indian: Mina namir Shr LinJiang.
English: My name is LinJiang Shr.

I can't understand it because it's written in English... Dui bu chi. :(

Twen, the cute 'bye bye' is used in casual conversation, that is, when speaking with a friend. Zai Jian is used when speaking with an older person as respect. :)
Edit: I understood peng you, which is mandarin for friend. Yea 1 point for me!

Simmone: Wow cool! When I grow up, I'd like to learn as many languages as possible. :thumbup

Luca, Your mom is a native of Bohol? wow. Then I can talk with her in Filipino? :)

Behold... Admire... Fear... and Wonder. Witness the fire burning in me... Burning... To Avenge.
