Name: Roscaht Renda

Gender: Male

Age: 44 years old

Race: Human

Tribe: Caltharian

Title: The Red Beard Merchant

Occupation: Roscaht is a traveling merchant who owns a small but well known guild that delivers goods from various places all over Santharia. He trades various types of items, but he especially likes business in importing and exporting high quality quarterstaffs and Caltharian dyed clothes. He usually delivers his items using his ship, but Roscaht occasionally also travels by land. He usually goes back to his guild in Caltharia after his business trip and continue to advertise until a new customer gives him an order.

Overview:

Roscaht is a gruff, stocky and loud middle aged Caltharian merchant who loves trading. He is a naturally talented trader and thinks of his trading business as his joy and entertainment. Once Roscaht makes an agreement with his customer, he is always committed and will do anything to have the best quality goods he can acquire delivered. But Roscaht is rather short-tempered, and when he blows up, nothing can't stop him from doing anything. He is hardworking but not a workaholic, and he is gruff but not violent. In fact, Roscaht has a deep dark secret: despite of his tough look, he is actually very kind and loving. It's just that the reality of business does not allow him to give others a soft impression. But Roscaht's men know their boss's nature, so they don't mind at all. In fact, Roscaht's men are always friendly and treat each other like families. With Roscaht being their eldest brother-like figure.

Roscaht is very meticulous when it comes to his goods, and will only have the best quality to be delivered. That is why Roscaht's guild in Caltharia (called Roscaht's Trading Guild... unfortunately, Roscaht is not very creative) is quite well known for their dependability and good quality. Though he might charge his customers with a slightly high price, Roscaht is not obsessed with money. He gives away charity at times and never tries to cheat his customers.

There is an irony in Roscaht's stubbornness. He may not be the most helpful guy around, but once he is commited, he is one stubborn man. And though he is a businessman, Roscaht might cancel a contract if his customer has given him a bad impression or treated his men badly. He is not afraid of fights or breaking deals as long as it will not affect his business drastically. If a customer had treated his men as if he/she owned them, or have insulted Roscaht badly enough in any way, Roscaht will not hold back and bite. Figuratively.

Physical Appearance: Chubby and stocky, well built with adequate amount of fat. Bushy beard that used to be bright red in color, but is now brown with grey streaks and weathered.

Appearance in Full Detail:

If one looks at Roscaht Renda for the first time and is asked to describe his appearance in few descriptive words, he or she would probably say "he looks loud and hearty" or "muscled and fatty at the same time". Yes, Roscaht is well built, and yes, he is fat at the same time. Roscaht consists of more muscle than fat, so he doesn't look dull like a huge pig, but rather menancing like a wild boar. He is quite tall, which adds into his tough first impression. Roscaht has a very deep and husky voice that could sound like thunder when he roars in anger. He rarely shows affection in his voice except when he is near his loved people, whom there are not many.

Though he is always exposed in sunlight, Roscaht's skin is always fair, but of course, weathered. His arms and legs are actually tanned, but it is very hard to see the difference unless one looks closely enough. His bright blue eyes are a mix of icy blue and indigo, and they always seem to have a dissaproving look. Roscaht's thin and wide lips are closed firmly under the bushy brown beard that flows until his chest. He has a strong, square jaw and a slightly crooked nose that used to be proudly straight when Roscaht was still a young man. Roscaht has three pierces on his left earlobe, and though he may wear different earrings for the bottom two holes, Roscaht always wears a small iron stud with a red gem in the middle for the third hole.

Roscaht has the Caltharian Coat of Arms tattooed on his left shoulder. He wears his shoulder-length auburn and grey hair under a red bandana. Some locks of his hair are braided and then fastened with red wooden beads or ornamented silver clasps. His hands are rough and weathered, and Roscaht always cuts his fingernails to their shortest possible lengths. Apparently, he thinks of having long, dirty nails even more troublesome than spending time clipping his nails.

Clothing

Top: Roscaht likes the color red. He wears a thin, white cotton tunic as his under garment, a leather armor vest, and a teki red hooded robe, trimmed with leather, over it. His robe is short sleeved and has black leather edges decorated with gold threads arranged in complex patterns. It flows down to the end of Rocaht's knees and has two big pockets on each sides. There are wooden buttons, but instead of fastening them, Rocaht leaves them open, as fastening them would result in intense sweat and uncomfortableness. He has leather bracers matching his armor vest on each of his arms. He also wraps a red bandana over his head that partially covers his forehead.

Waist: Roscaht wears a brown leather belt around his black cottom pants. He hooked two small leather pouches on his left that contain miscellanious items and very few money (he's smart, he knows storing all his money in exposed places like his pouches is a very bad idea).  A Zarathian dagger shaped like a short broadsword with slight curve at the end, hangs under a sheath on his right waist, and it is engraved in complex patterns the maker have designed especially for Roscaht. It has a hexagonal shaped nameless blue stone on the hilt.

Bottom: For bottom, Roscaht prefers to wear something confortable and easy to move with. He wears a pair of long, black cotton pants that hide his leather boots. His leather boots are made of the best quality and is slightly loose around Roscaht's muscled legs. Roscaht's pants ae slightly torn in few places, but it is quite obvilious, so he doesn't mind them.

Weapons: Roscaht carries a Zarathian dagger he got as a present from one of his most trusted business partner, who also taught him how to use it, and also a giant, 2 ped russet brown quarterstaff made of oak that is 3 nailsbreaths in diameter. The quarterstaff has an iron cap on the top. He have mastered both weapons and is very skilled at them.

Personality:

Personality Overview:

When customers first meet Roscaht, they tend to feel slightly intimidated by Roscaht's curtness, but because Roscaht has this certain charisma, they also feel respect around him. He is a natural leader and most people tend to follow his lead and don't dare to disagree with him. Only those who know Roscaht's true personality could oppose him. Roscaht is very meticulous and will look at all details before going onto his next task. He doesn't bother hiding his anger when he feels provoked and could be very threatening to his opponents if he wants to be.

Detailed Personality

When Roscaht speaks, he is very harsh-sounding, and prefers to speak in rough slangs rather than formally even when he is in the middle of a negotiation with his customer. Roscaht is brutally honest in terms of criticizing and will not give a compliment if he doesn't mean it. But that doesn't mean that he likes to tell insulting jokes and say mean things to people just for his own amusement. Roscaht's personality may make him seem like he is a very complicated man, but he's just an honest man who loves his merchant job and doesn't like formality.

He rarely shows compassion to anyone. And he never liked telling others how he felt about them unless it was very necessary (such as telling an insolent customer to get lost). None of Roscaht's men remember him giving them a specific compliment except for an occasional, "Great. Good job, boys." Roscaht is also very persistent, for once he is determined to do something, others cannot stop him unless they tie him down on a big log with heavy steel chain.

Roscaht was a natural leader since he was but a little child. He seems to have his own way of motivating people to follow his lead, and most people who work under him look upon him and trust him. And yes, if anyone else fails, one could always trust Roscaht into doing something... well, at least, as long as he decides to work with them. Rocaht is a very responsible man and feels very bad if he doesn't keep a promise. It makes him feel like a failure. This might be because of his honesty and his determination, but one thing is sure: he is a very prideful man.

One somewhat negative thing about Roscaht is that he thinks that everything is in his responsibility, therefore sometimes Roscaht could be too patronizing or pushy. He loves working as a trader, and he feels that every outcome that his guild gets comes from what he does and how he acts. This is why Roscaht is very serious about his job, and is also why he charges prices that may be slightly higher than average. Though he may not seem like it, Roscaht is very caring about each and every one of his workers, and he feels that he should support all of his workers financially as their boss.

Not many people who have met Roscaht think that he is one of the friendliest acquintances they have met during their whole life, but those who have lived with him as one of his men or family or friends know better. Roscaht is actually a very soft hearted man who is just afraid to show his true nature, for he worries that being too kind might affect his business. Roscaht was too used to be gruff that he frequently seems to have a double personality.

Roscaht, unfortunately, is not an artist. Though he appreciates art and music, he is not interested enough to create one himself. Those who are close to him often tease him for not having a good imagination, but Roscaht could care less.

Roscaht does not have a specific hobby, but he does enjoy his work. The whole process of negotiating, making sure that all products are in best qualities, delivering the goods personally, and receiving the outcome is enjoyable to Roscaht. If he was to seriously answer the "What's your hobby?" question, he'd most probably say, "Mind your own business, laddie."

Strenghts and Weaknesses

Strength

Roscaht is a master in the quarterstaff, for he studied its art for exactly 30 years (started since age 14). He even teached them to a few of his most trusted and beloved companions. Though it may seem that Roscaht could be better off with swords or axes, particularly because of his big body, Roscaht has the ability to crack an orc's skull with one full powered blow of his huge quarterstaff. He carries his specially handmade quarterstaff all the time.

Another weapon Roscaht has mastered is the Zarathian dagger that was given by one of his very few trusted acquintances, who was also Roscaht's regular customer. This Zarathian customer of Roscaht had traveled with him personally as a business partner for 16 years and eventually became someone like a brother to Roscaht. The Zarathian dagger, as it is explained above, is like a miniature broadsword that slightly curves at the end, and it is engraved with patterns on the dull edge of the sword. It is about 1 fores 2 palmspans long, and its hilt has a blue stone that Roscaht never knew the name of. His men named his sword Bluebeard, partly because Roschat's nickname was Red Beard, and because the stone on his hilt did not have a specific name.

There is a certain charisma in Roscaht that makes people around him respect him, follow him, and, sometimes, fear him. He is generally gruff and could voice his opinion whenever he wanted to, which made those in his surroundings careful in front of him. Roscaht's charisma also makes those who want to oppose to him hestitate before doing so.

Roscaht's large bones, height, and muscles covers much of his fat, and since he is quite large, not many people would want to fight physically with him. He could take down an orc if he wanted to, which generally isn't one of his interests.

Being highly meticulous and serious about trading, Roscaht's commitment to his job earns him many respect and recognition from his customers. Since Roscaht only allows the best qualities to be delivered, many of his clients usually end up highly satisfied and wanting to have business with Roscaht again. This keeps Roscaht and his men from having an empty storage room.

Weakness

Roscaht's tough attitude might earn him some respect, but it could also lead into misconceptions and spite. Those who are not used with Roscaht's gruffness might find him to be a jerk, and some people might get dishonest with him out of fear if anything else. Roscaht's hostility doesn't allow him so socialize much, and this made Roscaht not very open towards others. Others might regard him as being too selfish, which really is not.

His habit of keeping things to himself frustrates Roscaht's friends, who only wants the best for him. Roscaht never told anyone about his family, secrets, and even his feelings except when it was absolutely necessary. Not many people know about his past, and this could arouse certain misunderstandings.

There is an irony in Roscaht: though he may try to conceal his true feelings, Roscaht becomes very emotional and acts any way he wants to when he is angry. For example, he could cancel a gravely important trading negotiation just because his customer has insulted him. Sometimes this could lead into a serious problem afterwards for Roscaht. His friends and workers must stop him when he's out of control.

Roscaht also feels that he should be responsible of everyone he knows, due to the impact of his childhood life. This causes a great burden to Roscaht, but unfortunately, he does not realize that worrying about others too much will just give him too much stress.

History

Roscaht Renda, also known as "Red Beard", was born as a Caltharian and was raised in a Caltharian way, but the background of his childhood home was Erpheronia. His father, a solemn and strict man with a very busy schedule, was a wealthy merchant and often traveled across the sea for trade. Roscaht's father's main business had to do with Erpheronia, so the man decided to live permanently in Erpheronia. Roscaht's mother, a lavish and carefree woman, ran the household with not much interest. Apparently, she wasn't a very good mother either. Born to be the eldest, Roscaht was burdened with 3 brothers and 2 sisters too look after.

Roscaht was the manager of everything in the household. Starting off with three immature brothers and two sisters who cared about nothing except for beautifying themselves, a reckless mother who spent her time away buying unnecessary junk, and to a father who rarely came home because of business trips, life wasn't very kind to the young Roscaht. At the age 12, Roscaht already knew how to organize a complicated list for the storage room and take care of financial matters that even adults have trouble dealing with. In fact, Roscaht was so skilled that his mother resolved into lettinig Roscaht do all the job. This might be the reason why Roscaht is a talented leader, and why Roscaht feels that he is responsible for everything.

Though Roscaht was dissapointed with his mother and his younger siblings' attitude, he knew that once he breaks down and cry, his morale and psychological vitality will weaken. So Roscaht never complained about doing his work and understood what it meant to conceal emotions at a very young age. But Roscaht knew that he had to show anger at times in order to remind others that he was still in charge. This might also be why Roscaht could get all emotional when he is provoked.

When Roscaht's father found out that his 12 year old son could do calculations, estimations, and predictions like an expert merchant, he was very shocked and proud. He also felt sorry to Roscaht, for he did not expect his son to carry such a big burden. So, he decided to allow his son a little getaway.

"Son," Roscaht's father said. "I'm leaving on a business trip again. This time, it is a 6 month travel by ship."

"Father, I bid you a safe trip." Roscaht said with a monotous tone.

"And this time, I want you to come with me. Work for me, Roscaht. Be my crew." his father smiled. After a few moment of surprised silence, Roscaht, slightly dumbfounded and secretly overwhelmed with happiness, slowly nodded.

So Roscaht was able to break free from the household while Roscaht's aunt, the younger sister of his father, took charge of the household. Unlike Roscaht's father, his aunt was a lively young woman. She used to be her father's secretary when he was still running a business.

"I am grievely dissapointed with my wife." his father told his aunt. "I am counting on you, my sister. Train my wife and my children while I am gone."

And so Roscaht boarded in his father's trading ship as a novice sailor. Roscaht's father did not want to spoil him; Roscaht knew that and respected him.

"Lookie. A novice. Hah. Scrawny arent'cha, lad?" A sailor smirked and ambled towards Roscaht, who was gathering a very thick rope austerely. Roscaht looked up and glared at the sailor. But he said nothing, which was a wise idea. The sailor gruffly smacked the rope out of Roscaht's hand and growled. The rope tumbled down on the floor helplessly.

"I ain't gonna treat you like a prince just cause yer the capt'ns son." He grabbed Roscaht's shirt and pulled the young boy up from the ground.

"And I ain't said that I was expecting to be treated like one." Roscaht managed to say between chokes and coughs. The sailor narrowed his eyes and stared at Roscaht with suspicion, slowly lowering the boy down.

"What'dya say, kid?" He growled again, but this time less menancingly.

"I ain't gonna expect to be treated like royalty. I'm one of you. I'm one of you water-rats, and boy I'm glad I am." Roscaht said again, mixing slangs with formality. Though it was his first time, he liked using slangs. It somehow defined more of his individuality.

"You're in, kid." The sailor grinned friendily much to Roscaht's surprise, and smacked Roscaht's thin shoulder playfully. "I like yer attitude. Welcome aboard."

I ain't gonna expect to be treated like royalty. I'm one of you. I'm one of you rats, and boy I'm glad I am.

Roscaht learned the way of a sailor. He learned how to speak in slang (which his father disregarded at first, but came to tolerate in the later days), how to work as a sailor, how to befriend a sailor, and how to live as a sailor. And since Roscaht was extraordinarily full of leadership, the whole crew of the ship came to treat the 12 year old boy with much respect. Roscaht was taken by his father into many business trips after that. As time passed, Roscaht became stronger and wiser. He began to change physically, from a skinny, pale boy with a striking red hair into a well-formed, athletic and swift young man with shrewd blue eyes. His much older friends influence Roscaht very much in many aspects, and he pierced his ears just like everyone else in the crew: three on his left earlobe. When Roscaht was 13, a teenager, his father began to give him responsibilities such as taking care of the stock and being in charge of keeping important documents safe.

Once, Roscaht's father's ship was attacked by a group of sea bandits. Thankfully, all crew except for Roscaht mastered some kind of martial art, and therefore the ship was saved from being ransacked. Everyone was happy, except for Roscaht. He felt bad not being able to fight along with his father and his friends. He wanted to learn how to fight as well.

Roscaht was 14 by the time his father's ship docked at Erpheronia again. Now, he has changed, and so did his family. His brothers and sisters were now not the disobedient, spoiled brats anymore, and his mother changed into a dignified, prudent and responsible woman, all thanks to his aunt. Roscaht was not the grim, untalkative young boy with an unpleasant past anymore. He was now a healthy and awfully tall young man with shrewd and wise eyes, and though he talked more, his gruffness hadn't changed one bit.

"Welcome back, nephew." Roscaht's aunt smiled as he unpacked his chest in his room.

"Thanks." Roscaht replied more curtly than he intended. He secretly liked his aunt, and he respected her. He cleared his voice and tried again. "How'd my folks do? Were they a nuisance?"

"You changed a lot," his aunt smiled instead of answering his questions. "Where did you learn the slang-- Oh! You have pierced your ear, honey!"

"... This? Uh.."

"I must say, that they look awfully good on you. But wooden studs?" his aunt shook her head. "A wealthy young man like you should wear at least a decent gem." then she took out one of her earrings and replaced it with the wooden globe in Roscaht's third pierce. It was a silver stud earring with a round, red gemstone.

"There. I love that earring, but I guess I can sacrifice one of them for my sweet nephew. Besides, it suits your hair color. You should be proud of your hair color, Ros. Not many Caltharians have bright red hair like yours."

Though Roscaht did not say anything, he was grateful of the gift from his beloved and respected aunt. She was a savior to him and to his family. She reformed the morale of the crooked household of Renda and gave Roscaht a chance to grow up like a normal child again. He decided that the earring his aunt gave would be one of his most precious treasures.

***

"Father," Roscaht spoke during the family reunion dinner.

"Yes, son?"

"R'member when we're attacked by sea bandits just a few weeks ago, when we were on our way back to Erpheronia? An' remember how the mates fought bravely and drove them away?"

"Yes, son. Our crew had done a great job protecting our ship," his father beamed.

"But I wus doin' nothin'."

".... Well, yes..."

"That is why I am humbly asking you, father. Teach me the art of fighting. Please train my with swords or axes or..."

"No, Roscaht. A merchant's weapon does not necessarily have to be a sharp object. Those are for warriors. We, as traders, have these as our perfect weapon." Roscaht's father pointed at his quarterstaff.

"This, my son, is what I will teach you."

Roscaht understood what his fathe was trying to say, and beamed. "Yes, father. I will learn them with all my heart."

From then Roscaht learned the art of quarterstaff from his father, and when his father wasn't around, his aunt. Roscaht was a very dedicated student. He always tried to do his best in learning every moves and skills. He was very patient to himself, and began to make his own moves and invent his own self-training program. As a result, he had completely mastered the basics of quarterstaff along a few of his own moves in merely 10 months. He continued on studying quarterstaff, and he still is in the process of training now. He always added more into an existing skill or move. And so, Roscaht had invented a whole new quarterstaff style for himself.

Roscaht stayed in Erpheronia until he was 18 in order to continue his former education. When he passed his 18th birthday, Roscaht's father decided that his son was all grown up and hired Roscaht personally as a crew of his trading guild. Roscaht, obviously, was happy about his father's choice. He continued working in his father's caravan as the financial manager. Then he was promoted and was participated during negotiations and meetings with customers as one of the important figures. By the time he was 24 years old, he was the right-hand of his father and had almost the same position as him.

Roscaht's father retired when Roscaht was 25 years old. Roscaht took over his father's company and started building it into an even more influencial guild. Because of Roscaht's fondness of traveling, his ship came to travel even more often than when his father had been the leader. Because Roscaht was more talented than his father, he had more customers than his father. Some of them became his regular customers.

One specific Zarathian trader was acquinted to Roscaht ever since he was 27 years old. This man, by the name of Areha (he was 4 years younger than Roscaht), relied on Roscaht to deliver the Zarathian daggers to overseas place. Areha and Roscaht had similar personalities, and therefore they quickly adapted to each other. Areha decided to work with Roscaht for quite a long period of time. The two traveled together as two caravans joined into one group.

Areha was not only a trader specialized in Zatharian dagger, but he was also a craftsman, master of its arts, and a blacksmith. As a way of showing his friendship, Areha decided to present Roscaht with a personally made Zarathian dagger and taught him how to use it (see strengths to see details). Every night Roscaht and Areha sparred with each other on the ship, under the moonlight.

Areha and Roscaht's caravan separated 16 years later when Areha decided that he should start a new business that did not travel. Apparently, he had set up a Blacksmith guild somewhere and Sarvonia and decided to take metalworking orders instead of delivering them.

Roscaht also met a new friend in a port in Ylfferhim. A young maelf girl, by the name of Iluvenis Graendathel, had sneaked into his ship when he was having a trade negotiation with the local traders with quarterstaffs. At first, Roscaht was upset. He did not want to have a distraction in his ship that could affect the sailors.

"How many times do I have to tell ye, that there's no place for a lass like you who might as well as spend half of her day brushing her hair!"

"So you've got problem with my hair, sir?" the girl had growled. She suddenly took the Zarathian dagger from his sheath and sliced her hair neatly just around her neck. Roscaht was surprised. This maelf girl had a very unusual personality, and he somehow liked her... 'masculine' attitude. He and his shipmates immidiately liked her and treated her like their family. They also gave her the nickname 'lad' after her boyish attitude.

He learned that her name was Yarrow. Yarrow worked in Roscaht's ship as they traveled back to Caltharia, where Roscaht had set up a guild two years ago. Much to Roscaht's surprise and delight, Yarrow was a very fast learner and was able to work as fast as other sailors in his ship. Roscaht secretly grew a fondness to Yarrow. She was like his child, and so Roscaht decided to teach Yarrow the art of quarterstaff for the sake of her own safety. She had mastered the basic skills in only a few months when Roscaht had taken almost a year to do so.

Roscaht separated with Yarrow in Caltharia, but met her again a year later somewhere in South Sarvonia when he was on his was to Remusiat in order to organize a trade negotiation with the nobles. He is currently in Remusiat, working on his beloved trading along with his most trusted companions and his friend.

Are you done? Cause if you are, you will need to put up the exclamation mark. You won't get any comments if the pencil is still marked :)

Hello Roscaht, and I shall be commenting on your personality and appearance today. My comments shall be in pink!

Quote
Apparently, Roscaht likes the color red.

You're the creator, so you don't need the "apparently".

Quote
His bright blue eyes are a mix of icy blue and indigo, and they are always set in a frown.

Uh, are you sure you can set your eyes in a frown? How about "They seem to constantly have a disapproving look in them." instead?

Quote
Roscaht is brutally honest in terms of criticizing and will not give (a) compliment if he doesn't mean it. But that doesn't mean that he likes to throw (tell) insulting jokes and tell off (say) mean things to people just for his own amusement.

Quote
None of Roscaht's men remember him giving them a specific compliment except for an occasional, "great. (Capatalise this please.) Good job, boys." Roscaht is also very stubborn, for once he is determined to do something, others cannot stop him unless they tie him down on a big log with heavy steel chain. (To me, being stubborn is generally negaitve, whereas determined is positive. You may want to rephrase this or something.)

Once Roscaht makes an agreement with his customer, he is always comitting (commited) and will do anything to have his best qualities (the best quality goods he can aquire) delievered. He is hardworking but not (a) workholic, and he is gruff but not violent. In fact, Roscaht has a deep dark secret: despite of his tough look, he is actually very kind and loving.

Also, first you say that you're always commited, then you won't hesitate to break a deal. It's contridictory.

Good luck!

Thank you very much, miss Seh'nara. i've edited the CD according to your comments, and it helped  grin unfortunately, despite the fact that I created my own CD, i can't find the part where I wrote

It's the third line of the overview. Also: delievered should be delivered ;)

One thing I felt with your S&W, is your weaknesses were heavily based on personality attributes. Does he have any physical weaknesses of noteworth?

well....... roscaht has always been doing some kind of physical work in the ship since he was a boy, and he does not drink excessively or does anything that could harm his body, and he trains everyday with his quarterstaff...

*thinks* oh right  :D

i was thinking that while making his physical attributes rather positive, i could balance that out by giving some of the personality attributes negatively.  :)

That can be very tricky, as they are more circumstantial than physical and can be very difficult to balance out. I would suggest adding something more than just personality weaknesses to help balance the strong weaknesses
