Hmm, seems we've got a nasty rat infestation on board ship.  Maybe we should put Mallorix and Fu onto "rat duty"!

* hands a sack and a stout stick to Mallorix and Fu *

Go get 'em!   evil

@ Fionn - Biology homework.  You're not studying to be a surgeon by any chance?

 :D  Thanks, Sim !

Oh, just a note to those surgeons about to remove that poor man's leg.  Before you go to sawing his leg off, most times the doctor would first use a knife that was shaped in a very curved shape, much like a sickle.  Placing the limb inside the arc, they used to quickly cut the flesh away, usually in one slice that would cut to the bone 3/4's of the way around the leg, then with the same cut, now using the outside of the knife, the last bit of flesh was carved through, leaving the bone exposed.  It was very fast, and the saw could then be used on the exposed bone.

Being so much faster, bleeding could be kept a little more under control, and there was less chance of death by shock.  (relatively speaking of course, as it was still a dangerous and gruesome experience)

As we were at dock for a long time, and the patient was considered likely for amputation, acquiring that type of knife would probably be standard practice.

Just a little idea from a historical perspective.  No need to follow it if you have it planned out.   :P  Image of blade, because I can't explain very well.

Yep, I was going to go with that procedure, Royce, but then I thought it'd be better to go with something siimpler; a straight cut through both flesh and bone.  I believe that technique was used prior to the 18th century.

Anyway, it's your choice really, Ylva!  If you want to go for the more involved procedure, you could edit your post, asking the doctor to show you how to use the knives that he mentioned.  Or, if you want to just hack on through, let me know and we can get started!

Oh, and don't feel left out, Rhia; you can have a go at the cauterising if you want!   :P

As for the fighters, I want to get you paired up for some sparring.  Empty hands first of all.  I was thinking it should be Malavon vs. Hylphan, and Koka vs. Royce!  Any objections?  If not, I'll be accepting bets soon... ;)

Just to say, Ylva, whether you will edit your post or not: that is one powerful internal monologue you wrote there. It was a delight to read it!

@Yurie: Ha, no, this is exactly the type of thing that Rhia would botch! Keep her away from anything sharp and all will be well. ;) In any case, I'll hopefully be having a post up soon.

*agrees with Fu* *very much*

Okay, Rhia; you can go and make the tea, then!  Do you think that your character would be feeling faint at all?  I'm only asking because I'll be writing a reply soon, and wondered if I should say that she's looking pale.

Hi Yurie,

Sorry for not reacting to the First Mate yet. Destiny has been moving fast, and non-Santharian distractions have taken their toll, too. Anyway, I'm not holding up other players at the moment, so I hope it's okay if I give myself until beginning of next week.

Great sick bay scene, by the way. Rhia, I'd advise you to faint at once. Given the detailed knowledge that the participating writers appear to have, I am decidedly *not* looking forward to reading the account of the gruesome operation! Watching it would be out of the question!

Yup, will do... something... I've actually got an idea in mind, and I'm getting close to the end of writing my post, so we'll see!

A question- are we assuming that Ylva has already performed the operation? Or at least begun it? I'll post and change it if it doesn't fit. Hope the details I have are vague enough!

Just wanted to say that was Oscar stuff Rhia you've just written. Amazing. Ylva doesn't really think Rhia is useless, but I imagine her acting very nannying.  buck I modified my post abit, to suit Royce's suggestions, Fionn, Yurie- Could Ylva almost botch up this amputation? She's been out of practise for a long time, then Jorek or Fionn could jump in....hmmm...what you guys think?

That's Rhia's perspective, not mine! Rhia's extremely touchy about that right now, don't ya know!... (I knew I should have written something OOC at the end... You know, like "The views expressed by the written character are not in any way representing that of the author unless further specified." ;)) And as for nannying, after Rhia learns that Ylva doesn't think she's useless, I think she'll appreciate the help very much- VERY much! (And thanks, Ylva! Speechless)

Yes, another fine post, Rhia; thank you!

@ Ylva - Of course you can mess it up a little!  Do you want to write how you botch it, or shall I?  I think it might be best if you successfuly complete the incisions, but then make a mistake whilst cutting through the bone.  What do you think?

@ Fu - No problem, I'm sure that your post will be well worth waiting for!   :)

EDIT:  Okay, I've just posted.  The ball's in your court, Ylva.  You can describe the whole operation, if you like.  I don't mind you puppeting Docor Jorek to do so.  Or, if you'd prefer that I do it, then just let me know!  We could work it out between us, of course!  And how about Fionn; would you like to help out somehow?

@ Rhia - It's up to you if you want to accept the capain's offer and get to know him better over a cup of cha.  You could always decline and go back into the sick-bay to have some more interaction with Ylva and Fionn.  Or maybe you'd prefer to do something entirely different?  I'll try to accomodate whatever you decide!   :)

And I haven't forgotten the fighters!  I'll get your sparring set up soon!

All right, so I posted anyway. Sue me, too!

Yurie, please feel free to wait a bit with the First Mate's answer, if you want to play out the fencing exercises first. I can wait.

(If the First Mate wants to drag Fu up the hatch by what remains of his hair, there is little Fu could do... I'd have fun describing what he'd feel! Up to you.)

EDIT: Changed Fu's speech at the end of my post slightly, after half an hour. (Washing the dishes is a good way to get ideas, I find.) I don't think many people can have read the previous version, but apologies to those who did.
