Elf, Quaelhoirhim

« on: December 17, 2008, 04:50:20 AM »

Name: Miés'áel Cór'yráná

Gender: Female

Age: 118

Race: Elf

Tribe: Quaelhoirhim

Occupation: Writer

Title: Inspiration Seeker

Overview: Coming from a well-off family from New Santhala, Miés'áel lived a relatively sheltered life. Yet, she always yearned for adventure, but was too afraid of the dangers that usually came with such an adventure. So, instead, she aspired to become an author. Not knowing anything about adventure posed a problem to the young author. While she awaits her inspiration to come to her, she makes copies of books, allowing more people the joy of reading.

Appearance:
Height: 1 ped, 2 fores, 2 palmspans, and 6 nailsbreadths.
     Hair Color: Nor’sidian (jet black)
     Eye Color: Santhran violet (purple)
Physical Appearance: Standing under 2 peds, Miés'áel is a little bit shorter than most of her people. This doesn't bother her as she prefers her books and writing to physical activities. Her skin is pale, but with a hint of an olive tan. Her ears, like all those of her kind, come to a sharp point. Nor'sidian hair stands out against her pale complexion as it cascades down her back, stopping just above the small of her back. Because she spends most of her time pouring over her books, she likes to pull some hair back into two small braids that eventually becomes one larger braid on the back of her head.

Her face hold the natural beauty of the fair folk, yet she considers herself very plain, for she compares herself to the heroines described in her books. Her eyes are the reason most people take a second glance. For humans, santhran violet is not a natural eye color, but among the Quaelhoirhim, nothing is strange about it. Her eyes were the reason her parents named her Miés'áel, or "Gem-eyed", for her eyes reminded them of some of the precious gems the dwarves brought to the market.

She hides the shape of her body underneath her large xazure robes, but there have been times when she switched her robes for form-fitting adventurer clothes. Of course it was all for research so she could better describe how the clothes looked and felt. Her body is lean with just the hint of curves, and she moves with the grace of a goddess, and many would-be suitors have described her as such.

More often than not, Miés'áel's hands and fingers are covered in blots of ink. Some stains have been there for several weeks. Most of the blots are nor'sidian, which stand out against her pale skin, but there are some of her favorite color, santhran violet.

Personality: Miés'áel is very curious about the world outside of her quarter. She has gained quite a bit of information from her books, but some of those are fictional tales. She loves to read and write, and she is very dedicated to her work and the accuracy of it. To find her information, as well as to get inspiration, Miés'áel has decided to undertake a journey across Santharia, a decision that was years in the making.

To strangers, Miés'áel is a bit shy, but very polite. She had learned from the years living in her parents’ house how to behave with guests and potential allies. Most of the time she is very calm, and quick to smile, but anger does rise up within her. Instead of taking it out on any one or doing anything rash, Miés'áel writes her frustrations and anger in her journal. Possibly, the only way to tell when she is upset is to read into her eyes or note how many new ink blots she has upon her hand, for she tends to splatter more ink when she is upset.

Even though she is very shy around strangers, she can really "come out of her shell" when around those she considers her close friends. She has a soft and light laugh which sounds like music on the ears. Often, she has fits of laughter when among her friends, for she loves to have a good laugh and tell funny stories.

She hasn't had many romantic encounters, for she prefers to have her man save her, not her looking high and low for a husband.  Whenever a man approaches her in a flirting manner, Miés'áel takes a careful look at him. Depending on if she likes what she sees, she'll go along with it, but only to the point of a kiss or two on the cheek. Anything further than that makes her terribly uncomfortable and she tends to make up some random excuse about needing to do this or go do that.

Strengths:
~~Educated~~ Miés'áel was privately tutored when she was growing up, so she knows how to read and write. This comes in handy when someone needs something read or written.
~~Knows some Thergerim~~At one point in time, Miés'áel had the idea to write a book about a Dwarven hero, thus she started to learn the Dwarven language. She stopped shortly there-after, thus she only learned a few words, and she has been known to mispronounce them.
~~Relatively rich~~ Before leaving home, Miés'áel’s parents gave her quite a bit of money. This helps her for she has no fear of going hungry or not having any place to stay.

Weaknesses:
~~Naïve~~ Before this journey, Miés'áel had never left New Santhala. All the information she has about the outside world is from the historical documents and fictional stories she has read.
~~Weaker than most~~ Because she engaged in no sports when she was younger, she never built up any kind of great strength. Indeed she finds it hard enough to carry around her books and things.

History: Miés'áel Cór’yráná was born to two wealthy Elves living in New Santhala, Lón’lohoán and Ohén’sú’ufanán. Lón’lohoán was a famous wood worker in the city. Some of his clients were the richest people in town. Ohén’sú’ufanán was a weaver, who also had many rich clients.

”My mother and father moved from Saloh to New Santhala. When they first came there, no one had ever heard of Lón’lohoán or Ohén’sú’ufanán, but it wasn’t long before their names and works reached the ears and homes of the noble. Before they knew it, they rose to the status of Master Woodworker and Mistress Weaver.”

Both Lón’lohoán and Ohén’sú’ufanán’s parents died pre-maturely from an illness and neither one had siblings. So, with no family to take care of, Ohén’sú’ufanán and Lón’lohoán lived very comfortably on the wealth they both obtained.

”Before they had wed, my father and mother had talked about children and they both agreed that they wanted to focus on their careers and had no time for children. I suppose it came as a surprise when my mother found out she was pregnant. Surprised, but secretly glad, as she later told me.

“On 15 Alé’veván  I, Miés'áel Cór’yráná, was brought into this world. Father told me that the midwife said I was a very special child, as I did not cry very much after I was born.”

Lón’lohoán and Ohén’sú’ufanán were now parents to a daughter. Because both their crafts were normally done in the home, with the exception of an occasional meeting with a client outside, Ohén’sú’ufanán and Lón’lohoán both could raise Miés'áel without having to sacrifice their careers.

Years went by. When Miés'áel was 10 years old,  Lón’lohoán and Ohén’sú’ufanán gave Miés'áel a beautiful journal. It was bound in a dark brown leather with her name in both Thrain and Styrash. This became the spark to Miés'áel’s love of writing.

”15 Alé’vevá. Deer journal. Gess wat! Todas mi birthday! Mome and Dade gav me you. I am going to rit in you evere da.”

It was then Miés'áel was given a tutor who specialized in reading and writing. Before long, Miés'áel was reading everything and anything she could get her hands on. She especially loved the stories about far-off adventures and how the princess always got her knight in shining armor. The tutor, Master Toman, tried to teach her other skills such as math and politics, but Miés'áel wasn’t interested. All she was interested in learning about was reading and writing.

"I remember spending many hours a day in our library at home. Nothing could satisfy my need for something new to read. I often would have to go to the local university and read their books there, for I had run out of new things to read at home. Sometimes, I would have to sneak out of the house and get away from Master Toman, as all he wanted to do was teach me other things I didn't really care for."

When Miés'áel turned 26, her parents started to look around for a husband for her. Miés'áel was troubled by this new development. In her mind, she pictured finding her perfect husband by him saving her from some great calamity, like many of the princesses were saved in her books. Over the years, Miés'áel had formed this idea in her head that she was one of the princesses in her story. Yet, this doesn't mean she became arrogant or anything like that, but she wanted to be rescued from her life of "normalcy" by a prince or handsome knight in shining armor.

Even though the men and elves her parents brought to her were nice in their own ways, Miés'áel would have none of it. By the time she was 34, she had had enough of it. She slowly became a recluse, and started to spend more and more time in her own room.

"24 Maáh'valannía: This is just getting ridiculous. My parents seem to think that I want to live a nice quiet life with a rich young man. That's not true at all! I want to write books, but not just any books, Diary, oh no. I want to write the kind of books that stirs one's imagination. But there has to be some truth in them, or else no one would ever believe them. My dear old friend, I know now what must be done."

Shortly after that journal entry was written, Miés'áel started to talk to her parents about the possibility of her leaving home. Ohén’sú’ufanán always knew this day would come. Often she would sit outside her daughter's room and listen to her daughter read her books, or read aloud while she was working on her latest project. It took Miés'áel  several years before she finally made up her mind to leave home. During this time, her parents had stopped pressuring her to find a husband and settle down. Even so, this did not change Miés'áel's resolve.

"I remember being a nervous wreck as I went down the stairs into our common room to speak to my parents about my leaving. Everything I needed was packed and ready to go in my room. For some strange reason, I feel as though my parents have known that this was coming. As of late, my mother has looked at me with the eyes of one who has lost someone. Could this all be a part of them stopping to find suitors for me?"

They did know, and they gave Miés'áel their blessings, as well as a large amount of cash. Ohén’sú’ufanán had to leave the room before the conversation was done, as she was overcome with emotions.  Miés'áel was overjoyed at the thought of going out and writing all kinds of stories. She quickly thanked her father and ran to get her things.

The first thing she wanted to do, was to visit the Dwarves in Tyr Donian. She had this great idea in her head about a story of a Dwarven hero. She needed to do research, as she wanted to make sure everything was absolutely perfect. She spent a year in Tyr Donian, and she learned a few words in Thergerim, but not enough to carry on a conversation.

"This whole Dwarven story isn't really working out. Thergerim is so hard to learn. I can't get my mouth to say the words quite right. I guess it doesn't really matter, as people reading my stories can't hear what I'm saying, but that's besides the point. I would know the difference."

Miés'áel needed to find inspiration, so she decided to wander around Southern Sarvonia for a bit, watching for things which would pique her interest. She often went home to her parents, where she would stay for weeks, if not years, at a time.  Now, she is back out on the road looking for her muse.

"I know my muse is out there somewhere, Diary. I just need to find him. I don't know. Maybe I'm meant to settle down and start a family, like Mother keeps insisting, but really? Maybe if I find the right man, then I'll settle down. Or maybe he'll give me the adventure I need to finally finish a book! I know, that's what I need! I need an adventurous man!"

And so, Miés'áel, in addition to searching for a good story, is also looking for an adventurous man who can help her finish a book.

Just a real quick question, could someone look over my S&W and lemme know if I'm balanced. I'm having problems figuring out if she's balanced or not and all that jazz. Thanks! :)

Hello Mies'ael!

I don't think that you will have to worry too much about your character being balanced since she seems to be just a sweet, kind of weak(physically) writer. By the way, it should be remembered that she is being compared to the average peasant, who has no experience with a weapon. So not knowing how to wield a weapon isn't a weakness and should be removed from your S&W section completely, please.

For me, it's difficult to tell whether or not your character is balanced because your S&W don't go as far into detail about each one as it could. Flesh them out a bit more, add another sentence or two to each so that it's easier to gauge exactly how much each one effects her everyday life.

-You could add the fact that it'd be difficult for her to defend herself should she be attacked to the "Weaker than Most" weakness.
-As for the "Educated" strength- is she good at math as well, or is she only educated in literature?
-For the "Naive" weakness, in what ways does getting all of her information of the outside world from historical documents and fantastical stories make her naive?
-"Relatively Rich" Exactly how much money did her parents give her? Well... no need to tell exactly how much they gave her. But what if her money is stolen from her? Should she require more, will they send it to her?

I would like to also point out that you might discover more S&W for your character when you write your History Section. Also, any personality quirks (such as her naivety) should be mentioned in her Personality Section. Once you've finished writing your character an have the Comments Welcomed! icon up, I'd be glad to give your CD a nice, thorough uri-check.

PS- Oh yeah! If she's actually good at her own creative writing, it should be mentioned in the Strengths Section, explaining how good of a writer she is. Mkay?...
Gosh, I hope I was helpful. There's a whiney baby and I'm super tired.

Hey i was just looking at your S&W like you specified and personally you could flesh them out a bit. Realistically, why would anyone want to have an adventure with someone who couldn't carry their own weight? But other then that, i think she is an interesting character, just doesn't seem like the adventure type as you mentioned... which as you also mentioned does pose a problem.

o trust me i know, ive done it before. But in my opinion it seems unrealistic.... but we are in a fantasy rpg so i guess realism isn't to high up on the list of things to accomplish haha.

Rurgol, look up the character Callie Sornak. She's one of my best characters I've written and she basically is all about weaknesses. Besides, most people in Santharia can't read, so if she did happen to be in an adventuring group, she can read the map for them.

This character is my attempt to make and Elven character that seems...Elven. I'll prolly only put her in the Herald and let her write, or something like that.

Just my take on my character. ;)

~~No defensive or offensive weapon~~ Never having to defend herself against anything has cause Miés'áel to never have to learn the art of fighting. She has read fighting scenes in books before, but never put them into practice.

I know you're still working on this, but since you mentioned balance in the first post, I'm pretty sure that lack of weaponry isn't usually considered a weakness, since the average peasant posesses no weapons, either. Nor would never having learned the art of fighting since the average person wouldn't do that either. ;)

Maybe a good weakness to replace that would be 'Vulnerable' or something like that. However, I find that she's pretty close to, if not completely, balanced anyways, and congratulate you on that. Though you've been around since way before me, so no surprise you have that all down. :)

Thanks, Eleyr. Although even though I've been around all this time, I still put that "No weapon knowledge" in almost all my new characters. *smacks forehead* I gotta stop doing that.

Good to see you around! Haven't seen ya in awhile. ^^

Interesting detail there in your physical appearance.

As for the rest of your CD, I'd would like to see you come up with at least a paragraph or two to add to her personality section. Otherwise, I see a balanced character that I'd like to approve.
