I just read all the fighting you described - I never could have written suchthings. How do you know, what to do in such a case?

Personally, I've done martial arts and a little bit of research on combat, so that goes into my writing when I do it. Things like momentum I find to be essential for conveying the combat realistically--the inertia and energy has to go somewhere, and fighters would learn how to use that.

It also comes down to experience. The more you do it (writing it), the better you get.

To be honest, Talia, I don't know anything about fighting, or about writing fight scenes! I just wrote what I did because that was the situation my character was facing.

I think one difficulty with writing fight scenes is that if you describe action after detailed action, the scene rather quickly gets boring to read. One trick that I've seen professional writers use is to be relatively sparse with detail of the actions, but to spend plenty of time describing emotions & thoughts, context (how's the light in the room?), even memories, ... While you're doing that, the reader is on tenterhooks, craving to learn the outcome of the fight. So the key, I think, is not in the detailed account of how, say, the swordarm's muscles move, but in the creation of suspense. Not that I'm particularly good at that - but I'm trying!

I think one of the reasons that Altario's and Drustai's fight scene in Chapter 1 Part 3 turned out so marvellously suspenseful and colourful is that they spent lots of time describing the thoughts & motivations of their characters.

Agreed.  I try to write not a tutorial on swordplay (though having watched many a sword and sandsals flick, plus researching online sword play does help), I try to write from an emotional standpoint.  I try to stress Altario's weaknesses, and in the fight with Dru, it was great to be able to have him come up against a superior foe, and to exploit him.

A superhero, to me, is boring to read about.  You care about characters who are not these infallible pillars, but those who one can identify with, and if you identify with the subject of the post, you put yourself in that situation and thus the experience becomes more visceral and exciting for you the reader.

The technical can't be wildly off, but it takes a back seat to the atmosphere.

Thank you Lili, for the encouragement and I am recovering, slowly...lots of pain, so I take pain meds, which are pretty strong and put me to sleep or make me so "loopy" that I do not know what I am saying or writing most of the time. I am trying only to write now when I am not so doped up.

I read your post about how the fight scene between Altario and Drustai was so good because of the thoughts and emotions that were the catalysts for the action that occurred
and I tried to write more of how Damien felt. Thank you again for your encouragement.

Does anyone know where Altario is? It's unlike him to disappear without notice. He hasn't even logged on for over two weeks, which is even more unlike him. Has anyone emailed him? If not, I'll do so. I just hope he is well, and is just taking a break from Santharia, or too busy to post.
