Simply put, this is the dustiest room in the whole house, what with all the wood dust and chips after Michael’s woodwork. At the side of the room stands a large worktable, with clamps and a toolbox, which contains the necessary tools. On the table, one can also find some unfinished works. A chair is left at a corner of the room, for when Michael feels some aching in his legs, or when it would be more convenient to whittle the wood when sitting.

Michael Diti
At Orly’s word, Michael directed him to the woodwork room. He had just done some woodwork early in the morning, so the room was understandably full of dust. Rummaging around, he managed to find a little piece of tool that he hadn’t had use for in a long time. He handed it over to Orly. “Here, this should work as your flint!

And I’ll take you up on your offer to whittle some wood. Just make anything you like!” Michael said, passing over his toolbox and some pieces of wood on the table. It’d be nice to see this hobbit at work; let’s see how he does his woodwork.

“Here, this should work as your flint!”

Orly smiled when Michael handed him the small tool, "thank you," he said simply, "greatly appreciated."

He put the tool at his belt as Michael spoke again.

And I’ll take you up on your offer to whittle some wood. Just make anything you like!

Orly watched as Michael handed over his toolbox and some pieces of wood. Orly smiled as he looked at each piece of wood in turn, before picking up one of them that was a good 3 nailsbreadths long and high and 2 nailsbreadths wide. He picked out the tool he wanted and started to talk as he worked.

"My travels have taken me throughout Enthronia and even south through Sanguia province. I hope to head further south and see Manthria," Orly said as he worked away at the piece of wood, "I have seen many things, but one in particular that caught my eye was a flock of little white birds called the coa-coa. Small and petite, they winged across the late afternoon sky as they sought their nests for the night. I aim to capture the beauty of the bird through this carving."

Orly then fell silent, his hands moving rapidly but steadily as he carved the bird out of the wood. He blew across the wood on more than one occasion as he did his best to clean the surface of the excess sawdust from his work. The beak emerged first, followed closely by the rest of the feathered head. The wings next emerged, the powerful wings that gave it the power of flight, and the tail feathers that directed the coa-coa through the air. Finally, he got to the talons, and carved them so that they would look as though they were sharp enough to grip hold of a tree branch. He inspected the carving critically and eventually nodded.

Handing it over to Michael, he said, "that is certainly serviceable. If I had the time, I'd smooth it down some more, but I think that gives you an indication of what I can do."

Michael Diti
Orly chose a piece of wood and started to whittle it, talking about his travels and the coa-coa birds, which he was carving. Michael looked on in respectful silence as the skilled hobbit quickly carved out an exquisite bird. He had learnt years ago that most people needed to concentrate while carving the fine details of a piece of work.

He was soon turning the finished piece of work around in his hands, scrutinising it, then handed it over to Michael, satisfied. “That is certainly serviceable. If I had the time, I'd smooth it down some more, but I think that gives you an indication of what I can do.”

Michael ran his fingers over the edges of the finished product. The wood was still rough, obviously, but the fine corners – especially the talons! – were truly a mark of excellence. Nodding his approval, he said, “Well, this work of art has surely proven your worth; let me make you something in return.

It was his favourite piece to make, difficult to master, but once he’d done it, it was a piece of cake. From a piece of wood, Michael fashioned a pony from it, taking care to detail the curves in its mane and tail. It was the Sarvonian Draught Pony, possibly the most adorable horse he’d ever seen.

I once saw this horse when a man came by Carmalad and did some tricks with this pony of his. I thought it was a beautiful horse, and I later heard that these horses are more often used by hobbits like you. So, this here is for you,” the elderly woodworker gently blew away the residue dust and handed it over to Orly. “Consider this a little impromptu exchange of gifts.
