So, I'm thinking about getting published. Apparently, Amazon will publish short(5-30k) texts through their Kindle Singles setup. I'd like to know if anyone has any experience with Kindle, especially Singles, and what you would suggest I consider. Even better if you have experience publishing this way.

I'm part of a writing group. A couple of months ago, e-publishing was the topic under discussion. We were basically advised to steer clear of Amazon due to the poor deal they gave authors. They said others weren't much better, but that Amazon was among the worst.

I really appreciate your input, Dek, but I'm struggling with your reply. Amazon leaves the author with all rights, prices between 1 and 5 dollars, and offers a 70% royalties.

The only other offer I've seen that's even close is Tor.com. While they require exclusive rights for 1 year, they pay per word, and it seems it's quite a bit larger sum up front. Tor is also an established fiction publisher, meaning that exposure is almost guaranteed. Not... actually guaranteed, of course, but it's a very high possibility. The downside here is that there's an 8-12 month wait before anything gets to their editors.

From where I'm sitting, it looks like it pretty well balances out. I can either throw things at the empty void of Amazon, knowing if it ever does stick, I'm in a good position, or put something at the bottom of Tor's pile and cross my fingers, hoping that the magic might happen some day.
