A Picture Contest - Wait a second, no, it's THE Picture Contest

So you've seen the 55 word challenge. And then you've seen the Haiku contest. Words are wonderful, are they not? But there's something more that we wanted to do; so we dropped in a Picture Contest.

You heard me right; it's a picture contest. They say that pictures can tell a thousand words (sue me for using such an overused line) and it's true~! Thus, the Picture Contest was born.

Your guidelines? It can be any picture, whether photographed, drawn, painted, mosaic, whatever - so long as you made the picture yourself and it has something to do with the stimulus, it's all good!

The stimulus for this contest is "Nature". Remember that words often have more than one meaning! This is a creativity contest; go crazy!

The deadline for your submissions is May the 25th, 2012.

"Dust Storm? What Dust Storm? Oh That Dust Storm!"

A couple of years ago my parents were asked to house sit for friends of one of mum's niece's and her husband in the wine growing area of Queensland for a period of approximately 6 weeks. The people had a large property which included 3 cottages that people could book out for the weekend or week if they so wanted ... mum and dad just had to be there to manage the property ... and as there was another spare room there, they were also able to invite people to stay there with them. I was one of the people who they invited, and while I was there, a dust storm came through one day. Normally you could see the mountains in the distance, as the left half of the picture shows (I am in it, along with mum and the owners' dog called Misty). The right half of the picture shows how much the visibility was cut down by the dust storm, as you can no longer see the mountains in the distance. I call this picture ... "Dust Storm? What Dust Storm? Oh, That Dust Storm!" and it was from a property on Ballendean in the Granite Belt region of Queensland, where mum's ancestors grew up.

So I was scouring my pictures for one I thought might be appropriate for this, and I decided to go with the picture below, taken from the 9th floor of the building that sits at the furthest southern point of Manhattan in New York City.

Aside from the natural aspects of the sky, sun, and silhouetted trees, I thought it symbolized something of human nature, too. When I was working in Manhattan, I was always struck by the human desire to build up and reach for the stars: not just the skyscrapers and giant churches, but also the stories of people who had come from across the world (past that little statue in the picture) to seek a new life in a world they knew little of.

So maybe human nature is a lot like that little Statue of Liberty in the distance: so small against the vastness of the sky, dim against the brilliance of the sun, but still standing, holding up a light in the night.

A few years ago I was really into making planets in photoshop.  It's a nifty technique where you grab google earth photos and increase the resolution and then make it a sphere then put it in a star field and play with shadows...It's a long, complicated process that took days to do and working out of files that were 400 MB in size. 

But in the end you can make some really awesome photos.

This photo is from a series a made a year ago. The series is called Mrtvoles which is a neologism I can't find a beautiful English word for - literally it means Dead Forest. The individual photos have no names. However, this one is a symbol of friendship in bad times for me.

Being a photographer this should have been easy, but there are so many elements to 'nature' including plants, animals and landscapes that it's difficult to pick one that depicts nature itself. I've managed to combine two elements in my picture bellow with a flower and a bee buzzing overhead, and hope it does the category justice.
