Welcome to the Poetry Train!

This is the beginning of a collaborative poem, which anyone can add to.

The concept is simple: this poem is written in TERZA RIMA, which means the rhyme scheme is aba bcb cdc ded efe ... on and on and on. All you have to do is take the last word of the second line in the post before yours (such as "hair" in the stanza below) and craft the first and third line of your stanza with a word that rhymes ("share", "bear", "stare", "fair").

Your second line may be whatever word you choose--but try to choose something that has many rhyming words (i.e. don't end with "orange").

If you're feeling a little poetic, feel free to join in. You don't have to write in meter, and it doesn't have to make sense. This is all just for fun. ;)

At a tavern met I a dwarven lass
With golden beard and hair
And calming eyes like al'tho grass

She had an impressive pair ...
Of muscular dwarves standing near
They gave me quite a scare!

In fact, I ran away with fear
But soon decided to go back
Because I left my mug of beer

(Roy: you'll borrow the middle rhyme of the person above you; in your case, "back"--so the end of your first and last lines could be "stack", "slack", "tack", "knack", "crack", "black", etc.)

which I desired not to lack.
I thought, "I'll punch her ugly face."
Then everything went black

I woke in a peculiar place
that sung with morning light
Beside a maid of gnomish race

And all at once I wished for night
I gasped and said a prayer
My sleeping companion gave me a fright

I lept ten peds into the air,
her face was so, so scary
And I couldn't help but stare

spoke I "don't mean to be contrary,
but your nose is long and big
and your arms and legs quite hairy."

"Your face looks not unlike a pig,"
Continued I, quite scared but bold,
"Your skin is like a wrinkled fig!"

As I looked upon her countenance, shrivelled and oh so old,
I rose to go, but then paused a blink,
As in her hand there appeared some silver and some gold,

As she started, oddly, to shrink
she handed me the coin and claimed
"I could eat a thousand mink."

Alas, right then curiosity flamed.
"Why is a mink what you choose to eat?"
I asked, and did not feel ashamed.

"Because their fur softens the meat,"
she said, unshrinking, producing some sand.
"And this 'tis my seasoning - can't be beat!"

The peculiar seasoning slipped from her hand
And I said with a shake of my head in despair:
"I'm sure that the eating of mink is banned".
