Hymeera was listening to Kibbons as he recounted the story of the wolves he had been hunting; how farmers had been terrorized by these wolves which had been killing sheep from their herds.  She nodded solemnly to the part where he told her how the wolves had moved into the Myrmin Highlands, then instead of being the hunted the wolves turned into the hunters.  They managed to disorient the men, separate them, then attacked them.

"But, and I know this sounds mad, but it seemed like they were not trying to kill us, only to scare us off."  Kibbons shook his head slowly.  "Strangest thing I had ever seen."

"But, you stated that your healer was killed in the attack."

Kibbons nodded.  "Yes, he was.  He was killed when his horse reared up and he was thrown.  He hit his head on a rock.  Brains just spilled out right there and then.  Ugly thing it was."  His brow furrowed.  "Still, the wolves did not eat him."

Hymeera noticed Claudirea approach and listened to her report on the wounded.  "Thank you, Claudirea."  She faced Kibbons once more.  "Will you be going back after the wolves?"

"I will, but I am going back to Salsair first.  These men need a rest."

"And the farmers and their sheep?"

Kibbons shrugged.  "There isn't much I can do with wounded men."

Hymeera chewed her bottom lip.  "Tell you what.  I have some prisoners that I was taking to Salsair.  If you escort them back, my men and I will go after the wolves."

The offer seemed to appeal to Kibbons and he nodded.  "I appreciate that, Captain."

Hymeera turned to Claudirea.  "See to it that Kibbons knows how to treat his men while they travel.  We will be leaving at first light to hunt these wolves., so be ready at dawn."

Claudirea must have had a slightly confused look on her face when she heard the two leaders talking about wolves, farmers and sheep. Her first thought raced to Luna, but she knew that it couldn't possibly be her. She was suppose to be with the others, and besides, she knew better than attack humans and their sheep.

But what took her really off her guard was Hymeera telling her to make sure Kibbons knew how to treat the men and for her to be prepared to go after the wolves. Did that mean Hymeera didn't mean to take her to Salsair? Claudirea bite her lip for a moment as she thought about how Borol and the others would react once they found out that she would continue to be a part of their group.

"Um...of course, Captain, but ah...could I have a moment?" Claudirea asked, stepping aside.

Once she was out of earshot of Kibbons, Claudirea spoke more freely. "I don't mean to question your judgement, Captain, but is it wise for me to continue to travel with you? I mean, I am thankful that I am not being carried off to Salsair immediately, but what about the men? There are some who would not look well upon this and, quite honestly, would rather see me dead than traveling with them. Yet, if you are sure about this, then I will continue to travel with you and take care of the men as best as I am able."

Hymeera stepped aside with Claudirea, while Kibbons took the hint and returned to his men.  She listened carefully to the healer and waited until the Eyelian was finished.

She took a moment to form her thoughts before answering.  "I didn't do this for you, Claudirea.  I did this for my men.  You have been our healer, and without you we no longer have one.  If this pack of wolves is as dangerous as Kibbons suggests, I'd rather have my healer than not."

This was not the complete truth, but it would suffice when Borol and the others counciled her to change her mind, and they would.  No, the reason Hymeera couldn't send Claudirea away was that she still felt a sympathy for the healer.

"Get sleep, little healer, for I want to set out after these wolves at first light.  When we are finished, you will still face justice in Salsair."

Claudirea opened her mouth as if to respond, but thought better of it. She gave a small bow before heading after Kibbons.

Wanting to make sure he understood the severity of the situation should his men get an infection in their wounds. She very carefully explained which herbs to use as well as how to bind the wounds. Claudirea also explained what an infected wound looked like and how to care for one.

"And once you reach Salsair, have all of them meet with a healer, just to make sure nothing is awry."

Once she was satisfied with Kibbons' knowledge, she left him to look for someplace to sleep. Glancing over at Hymeera's men, she decided she probably shouldn't sleep next to them. The looks they were giving her weren't very friendly. Pausing for a moment, the healer thought about her choices. She decided that she would go sleep next to the wounded men. That way, Kibbons wouldn't question why she wasn't next to the rest of her men. That and she could keep an eye on them for a bit longer.

Once she had set up a bedroll, Claudirea settled herself down, but sleep alluded her. Her mind flittered from one thought to another. Salsair. The duke. The men she travelled with. Drea and Gilith. Luna. Norman…

Her mind settled on him for a moment. She hadn't feared judgment nor the outcome, but just the thought of her husband made her want to rethink her choices. What would he think when he learned of her treachery?

If he still was alive.

An unwelcome thought intruded. The healer frowned slightly when it popped up.

No, he was alive. That was the only thing that kept her going sometimes. She had to believe in that at the very least.

Norman was still alive…

The thought was her last before sleep finally claimed her.

The next morning saw the two groups of warriors making their farewells.  Kibbons and the prisoners made off towards Salsair, while Hymeera and her men turned westward..  To be sure there was grumbling among them, those who were tired of being out of the city.  Others, like Borol could be heard complaining that Claudirea was allowed to continue with them instead of being sent to Salsair to hang with the other traitors.  If Hymeera heard any of this, she pretended to not.

The Myrmin Highlands were a series of high bluffs and craggy cliffs that formed the south bank of the Vandrina River downstream from the bridge.  The rode at a slow steady pace, Borol out in front looking for sign.

Hymeera couldn't help but think that having Gilith here would be a boon to them now.  Borol was able to track, but Gilith had proved himself second to none on many occasion.

It was well past midday when Borol let out a call that he'd spotted something.  Urging her horse forward, she trotted up to him.  Her eyes followed where his gloved hand pointed.  In the fresh snow were a dozen or more large wolfprints.  She was slightly astonished at the size.

"Claudirea, have you seen wolfprints this large before?  They have to be at least half as much larger than Luna's."

Claudirea was thankful to Hymeera for allowing her more time upon the Disc. Yet she was troubled by the grumbling of some of the men. Even though she had healed many of them, some brought back from the brink of death, they still wished her dead.  Now more than ever she wished her Norman was with her, or even her friends Drea and Gilith.

She was wrapped up in her own thoughts when the wolfprints were found. Dropping quickly down from her horse, Claudirea gently ran a hand over the prints, amazed herself at the size of them. Luna was a fairly large wolf, but this was something completely different. Her mind was racing, trying to remember everything she knew about wolves in this area.

"It couldn't be..." she said under her breath as her mind rested upon the only possibility she could think of. The healer thought harder, trying to find some other explanation, but nothing else came to mind.

"I personally have never seen prints this large before," she said, standing to her feet slowly. "Yet I may know what could have made them. But...this far south...?" There was a moment of silence before she spoke again. "I think these tracks were made by wargs, but I find it hard to believe. From what I remember hearing from the Elders, wargs were driven out of Santharia many years ago. To the North. I...I must admit I thought that they were a myth told to scare young Eyelian children."

Frowning, Claudirea looked down upon the prints again. Again she wished Gilith was there. He know more about this kind of thing than she. Sure, she had a certain connection with nature, but her main area was plants. And something she had only counted as myth? Tales the Elders told her came to her mind. She wasn't sure how much was truth and how much was embellishment to make them listen to their parents, but all the same, it frightened her.

Hymeera scowled.  Wargs?  This far south?  That was not good news for anyone.  If this was true, then they had to hunt down and destroy this pack.  "At least Kibbons didn't say the wargs had riders.  We can be grateful for that.  Perhaps they are a wild pack that came south for more abundant prey?  Maybe the riders were killed?"

Hymeera realized she had been thinking out loud and cleared her throat.  "Everyone keep your eyes open.  These tracks are fresh.  We are close."

The group moved forward, with Borol out front leading the way.  He took out his bow and readied an arrow into it.

Less than an hour later, Borol raised his hand for the group to stop and pointed down into a clear ravine.  A pack of wolves was resting near a large spot of red covered snow.  The carcass of a deer, half eaten, lay only a few feet from the resting wolves.  A couple of younger wolves were playing and wrestling together.

Suddenly the alpha raised his head and looked up at the group.  A quick bark from him got the attention of the other wolves and they all rose.

Before the wolves could flee, Borol sent and arrow down at them before kicking his heels into his horse's flanks and racing down the hill.

Hymeera kicked her horse and followed Borol and the rest.  She saw that Borol's arrow took one of the younger wolves that had been wrestling.  The wolf let out a high pitched yelp and took off in a direction other than the rest of the group.

"Claudirea!  With me."  She glanced back to make sure the little healer was following her, then she turned her mount to follow the wounded younger wolf.  Even though an arrow protruded from it's left rear flank, it was still very swift and kept twisting in and out of the treeline.

Hymeera pulled on the reigns to her horse and came to a stop.  She drew forth her sword and looked about, but the wounded wolf could not be seen.  She turned to Claudirea.  "Be very careful.  I don't know where-"

A blur of dark fur erupted from a briar bush next to Hymeera.  The wolf jumped up high, it's teeth bared, while Hymeera's horse reared in fright.  Her sword came up, sliding across the wolf's ribs, while the wolf's teeth ripped the Centoraurian's cheek.

Together the two combatants fell off the horse.  Hymeera hit the ground hard, her head bouncing off a large stone.  Her world went dark.  The wolf hit the ground and rolled into some deep undergrowth, disappearing from view.
