As you travel the beautiful countryside don't forget to look up and see the many wonders in the sky. Caelereth is home to a huge variety of flying animals. By far the majority of the flying animals are birds. Birds are charecterized as winged animals with feathers and a beak and almost all birds lay hard-shelled eggs. Birds come in all shapes and sizes and are found in every climate in Caelereth. Notwithstanding the feathers and wings not all birds have the ability to fly long distances and some are not able to fly at all.  Below you will find a list of the birds and other flying animals that have been studied by our compendiumists. However this is but a fraction of the flying animals actually found in our world, so if you are out exploring and see a flying animal not in the compendium... take notes and submit an entry!

The Aelirel Bird

Aelirels are small birds of white plumage that live in forests, plains, and heaths throughout Santharia. They live in communities and work together to hunt for flies and beetles, as well as other insects. They also enjoy berries and nuts. Aelirels are fairly friendly birds, often causing them to put themselves in dangerous situations. They are viewed as the symbol of innocence and are often associated with the hobbit deity Dalireen

The Al'Syrr Sandbird is a symbol of desert survival! It spends its whole life in various parts of the great Ráhaz-Dáth Desert and outlying regions, despite the inhospitality. It moves with the seasons, adapting its behaviour and diet to match current temperature, amount of rain and available food sources, like a true survivor. - After years of study, following in the footsteps of Thuja (the first to document Al'Syrr), we can't help but admire such a seemingly ordinary bird. To follow are the notes of the extensive research. Return to the top

The Blue Glitra

The Blue Glitra is a rare and elusive bird. It has taken years to compile information about this enigmatic and beautiful bird and even now there is much that is still not known. It has been suggested there is something magical about the song of the Blue Glitra. That may well be, for all people who have heard the song say it is a beautiful and entrancing song, but so sad. Return to the top

The Caladrius (the plural form is "Caladrius" as well) is a snow white bird that is usually about one fore tall from head to feet. They are known for their exotic song and stunning beauty. They are one of the more intelligent breeds of birds, even been known to learn several simple voice and sign commands, mostly to amplify their beauty. These birds are originally found in the wild, flying in the areas around the Bolder Forest, but are often kept in captivity by humans, though they are extremly friendly to elves. Return to the top

The Chorakee, also known as the "Jumping Bird", or "Tree Fowl", is the jungle's answer to taenish. Fat, tasty, and appearing clumsy as they hop through the trees, these fairly large birds only survive due to their great fertility, and their jumping skills. Found only in large amounts in the Drifting Woods, Chorakee are used by their owners as a reliable source of flesh, eggs, and down, and a holding pen for these birds makes a valuable addition to every settlement or farm. The Corbie Bird

The Corbie is a large black bird of ominous aspect but cheerful nature, dark-winged, heavy-beaked, bright-eyed and strong-clawed. Not a raptor, but a scavenger, the Corbie can be found in most climates and environments in theSarvonian continent. Some believe it to be a symbol of death and decay, due to its preference for scavenging carrion and other dilapidated consumables, but others consider it a good omen, as it is a gregarious bird always found in family groups or larger flocks. The Corbie is also known Crow, Carrion Crow, Stormcrow, Jav’veir, Hravn, Death Bird or Rogue Bird. Return to the top

The Dove ("Coa-Coa")

The most common term for referencing this white bird is the "Dove". Though the elves have named it Aelién Eyá'pholiár translating roughly to "White Peace Maker", which also fits to what it represents in religious terms, as it is seen as a messenger of the Santharian Peace Goddess Eyasha. People in Southern Sarvonia have created the slang term "Coa-Coa" after its soft trill. Though you will not find a researcher calling it this name, many peasants use this as their sole title for the birds. Return to the top

The Dragonbird

A rare and beautiful species of the Scattersand Shoals, the Dragonbird is as mysterious as it is colourful. Found only in the deepest jungle territories, they enjoy long lives amongst the treetops. Possessing a keen intellect, and capable of being trained for various purposes, they are highly sought after as exotic pets to the wealthy but their rarity and remote habitat ensures such uses are the exception rather than the rule. A strange, mystical creature dwelling in the densely grown forests and wood of Nybelmar, particularly the Drifting Woods, the Ferlawyng was long thought a thing of myth and legend until recent research confirmed its existence. Its appearance strikes awe and fascination into those who look upon it, and it has been compared to dragons, fish, snakes, and even bats, though it remains something entirely separate from these. The shy Ferlawyng holds unknown magical abilities belied by its docile nature. Although large, it eats only the leaves of the canopy.

For a long time, those few who saw the Ferlawyng believed it came from nowhere, that it spawned out of air and trees and light, but since then its means of reproduction have been revealed, mostly through accidental discovery. Return to the top

The Gossiper Bird

The Gossiper is a medium-sized forest bird of green plumage, whose large orange beak protrudes like a broad, slightly curved and pointed dagger from its small head. Its name derives from the peculiar way in which it constructs its mating song. The way for the female to attract a male is to make up a composition from selected imitations of other creature’s voices. In many cases, a female Gossiper’s song will be composed of the chirpings of other types of bird, the snorts of wild hogs, and the playful yelping of young foxes – whatever the particular Gossiper has heard recently, and whatever she judges to be particularly attractive to a male. The Haloen Bird

The Haloen, also called Efér'veván ("Firebird") in the styrásh tongue, is a red plumed bird with a feathered crest. There are countless stories of this bird saving one among many from certain death, by bringing food, or offering warmth, or warning of danger. A common misconception is the idea that the bird does this of its own volition. Quite the contrary: A Haloen will only answer a favour by a sorcerer or by a deep bond, formed only by common hardship and danger. Return to the top

The Injóh Bird

The Injóh is one of the smaller birds of Sarvonia, found in different forests on the continent, depending entirely on the season of the year. The Injóh is often captured and sold as a pet bird, this mostly because of its beautiful singing and colorful feathers but also because it is believed that this little bird attracts love. The Nue'mon (Kuglimz lit. "Ice Bird", plural form is Nue'mon as well) is found in cold climates. This puts them mostly in Northern Sarvonia. In the rare instance that the Nue'mon is found in Santharia it is known as the Yuliel Bird, named after the researcher who proved it could be found south of the Tandala. The bird also has several other names throughout Northern Sarvonia. Amongst the Ice Tribes it is known as the Cicle Bird. Return to the top

The Quwish (plural form "Quwish" as well) is a peculiar looking creature. It looks as though a deity jokingly put a cat and a weird looking bird together. This animal is just a bird with some feline resemblance. It is often domesticated by trainers in Sarvonia once they are imported, though many Quwish do live in the wild. They were named "Quwish" because if you saw one in the wild you would hear the "quququ" of it quaking, and then a swishing sound as the bird flies away. Return to the top

The Wynd Racer is a small two headed domesticated variety of the wild coa’coa birds (named for the soft sound they make) of which there are two hundred and six species found so far in the continent of Sarvonia. The Wynd Racer was and still is bred specifically for speed, endurance and their innate ability to find their way back home, however, some of these birds never did satisfy their breeders and were let loose. These have settled and are welcomed by most in all of the cities of Caelereth. Return to the top

The Kingell is a rather elegant bird, long-necked and wide-winged. His sharp beak denotes him as one of the few hunters among the ground birds of Santharia, and also the only swimmer in this classification. With web-pad feet he can take to the water with ease. His meat is not usually selected for consumption, as the bird is fatty and hard to cook. The Kingell has the ability to swim, and can dive beneath the water's surface to hunt for fish. However, because its wings are not waterproof, this is a rather dangerous practice for the Kingell. Return to the top

The Mathmoor is the largest Sarvonian ground bird, at a height of over two peds. It has thick legs and light, fur-like feathers, as well as a viciously curved beak. Its size makes it easy to see over the plains, but no smart predator would approach the Mathmoor. The Mathmoor is territorial and easily angered. In Northern Sarvonia, where the Mathmoors are most abundant, they are domesticated and ridden like horses. Return to the top

The Mirjah (both singular and plural) is a small common bird incapable of flight, from the mid and south regions of the Kingdom of Santharia, and a true culture bird, always to be found in the presence of man, be they elf, dwarf, hobbit or human, from wich they scavenge food and other necessities, such as nesting material, aided by their speed and incredible jumping abilities to avoid both predators and anyone trying to salvage what just has been taken from right under their noses. Return to the top

The Taenish

The Taenish is a small bird, about four spans in both length and height. It is easy to take care of and its meat is easy to cook, making it a good bird for farming and consumption. Its drab look and lack of intelligence makes it easier to do away with when supper time arrives. Return to the top

The bird is considered a symbol of the Lanruls, the tribal leaders of the Ice Tribes, who have adopted falconry as a sport of the elite. Return to the top

The Tagers are the most impressive animals of the Zharkanion Mountains in Nybelmar and also the rarest. One of few flying beasts, these bird-lizards are the most feared predator in the mountains. With a wingspan of more than 3 peds a full-grown Tager is a very powerful animal. It can lift a dwarven child without much effort. The dwarven name for them, Hun, plural Huunerons ("The ones who take"), were given to them due to precisely that fact. The lifespan is hard to determine, but most experts among the dwarves agree that it’s between 50-80 years. Return to the top

The Shupsh

A very rare and rather extraordinary bird living in the icy regions of Northern Sarvonia is the Shupsh. For, it does not migrate, nor does it hibernate, rather it spends all year in the frozen northlands surviving the bitter cold and the harsh seas. It received its name from the sound that it makes when it enters the water from the air. This is a common naming system for the local inhabitants. However, in Santharia many people know of this bird as the Turik Bird, so named by the notorious researcher Turik of Barsalon.

The Arrowhead Goose is a relatively small fowl which spends the colder months along the mid-Santharian river the Thaehevil, and migrates to the Kanapan Peninsula to mate. It gets its most common name from the pattern of black and white feathers on its underbelly, and "Wood Goose" from its love of more sheltered territory. In the towns of the Sanguian Province it is better known as the "Brownie Goose", as the Llaoihrr tribe use it to carry their trading goods. Among the little folk it is called "oioiLLoiao", literally the "Bird of going Outside", as its sole purpose is for travelling out of the safety of their Vale. Return to the top

The Howler Goose gets it name from a noisy trumpeting call that sounds like a low whistling howl. The Howler Goose is a migratory bird. The Balyei

The Flying Sponge, or "Balyei", of the Drifting Woods is yet another example of the strange and bizarre flora and fauna of this particular region. An incredibly simple creature, it resembles nothing more than a fluffy ball of living tissue floating through the air. Nonetheless, one can safely state that the Balyei is one of those rare beings that make you wonder if the Spirits of the Heavens might have been in a rather playful mood when creating this unusual lifeform.

The Bat

Bats are also known as Cave Bats, Canyon Bats, Flittermice or Darksingers. This small flying mammal has a natural ‘sonar’ system, is a devoted mate, and can eat its weight in insects in one night. It prefers to roost in caves by day and flies by night, using bounced echoes to determine its location in the air. They are favorites of the Thergerim, who have domesticated them and use them as a kind of organic message system (see Morjualerons entry). A group of bats is called a “clowd”. Return to the top

The Dragonfly Lizard

The Santharian Dragonfly is a creature found throughout Santharia's forests. It is widely debated which class the Dragonfly fits into as it is winged yet it also has many traits of a reptile. It has even been considered an insect by some; however, most will agree that it is indeed a reptilian animal. There are two types of Dragonfly distinguished mainly by color. However, in a closer look it is found that these Dragonflies also inhibit various different behaviors. Body structure of the two Dragonflies is virtually the same and both have similar lifespans between 5 and 7 years. Return to the top

The Kanapan Terror

Kanapan Terrors are a larger and slightly more intelligent cousin to the flitter mouse. With a wingspan of up to one ped and a weight of two muts these bats are about triple the size of most known species. A group of Kanapan Terrors will make their home far from any densely populated area, preferring to live in the undisturbed wilderness. Roosts have been found in the forests of Cahm and throughout the Kanapan peninsula supposedly for its temperate, moist climate and wide variety of insects and smaller rodents. Return to the top
