Fear no longer the exotic orthography of our elegant Styrásh tongue, for the development of a definite pronunciation guide to aid our weary eyes and minds has begun.

I spoke recently with Arti, who recalled discussing the pronunciation of Styrásh with our Anwulf, and he was confident that Anwulf recorded and saved the values that they had discussed.  Anwulf - might you post those values so that we have a foundation to build upon?

Well, I remember that <y> represents /y/, but that's about it.

Anwulf hadn't been sighted so far on the new Forum - maybe I can dig out his e-mail somewhere, so that you can point him to this thread :)

P.S. Maybe scrolling texts aren't that ideal for signatures - we didn't allow animated stuff in the previous Forum, so maybe we shouldn't do it here either. Just think about everbody having scrollers as signatures - would look more like Las Vegas then instead a Message Board.

Alright, thank you, Arti!  Come to think of it, an email address would be helpful... and I will get right on changing the sig, didn't know about the no-animation policy, sorry.  sorry

I recieved a failure notification from Yahoo! about the email that I sent to anwulf@teamhuh.com saying that that email address does not exist... ??? Do you remember any of the values off the top of your head, Arti?

Well, it seems that this e-mail address is the only one I have from Anwulf, and it doesn't seem to be valid anymore. I'm sure sooner or later Anwulf will show up, however, he just isn't that regularly checking the boards.

However, what I found BTW are 5 pages of things he put together on "Styrásh Phonology", including the various questions he had on the issue how to pronounce certain things, and my notes are on these pages. Problem is, I have them only printed out, not in digital form, as the information has been lost on the ezBoard forum. Maybe I can scan that in or something.

Yeah, I think scanning them is probably a good temporary solution, unless Anwulf manages to reproduce the whole thing.

Finally here's the scanned in paper I've talked about, including some rough notes of mine in probably unreadable handwriting (picture below is a preview only). Talia had a scanner, so that helped :)

The text has 5 pages, so here are the links:

Um, yeah, I cant read your handwriting at all, but I assume that a tick indicates that the passage is correct?

Also, if you need any help figuring out what sounds Anwulf's phonetic transcriptions are supposd represent, try looking here

I tried making a list based on the information on the scanned pages, with the assumption that the ticks indicate that what Anwulf said was correct.  It turned out to be really tiny, but it's a start, I suppose.  I used the X-SAMPA transcription of the IPA, so that I didn't have to deal with unicode.  An IPA sound reference can be found here

Stuff that I'm reasonably sure of:
Consonants
h: Represents /h/ or /x/. Possibly allophones.
sh: /S/
th: Represents /T/ or /D/ or, possibly, both (like English), but I'm not sure.

Vowels
y: Represents /y/.  I remembered this from the old discussion from before the hack.

Less certain stuff:
c: I see something that looks like 'c...soft, k...hard', by which I suppose Arti meant to say that 'c' is pronounced like the English 'soft c', which is actually /s/, and thus probably redundant if the styrash 's' stands for /s/ as well, which is most likely the case.
f: There's something that looks like 'always f' below that.  Does this mean that 'f' in styrash always represents /f/?

Edit: Oh, I just had an idea.  Perhaps someone with Skype and some knowledge of linguistics could try working it out with Arti?  Or maybe Arti could just post recordings here for us to listen to.

All this linguistic stuff confuses me. Perhaps we could put a "Styrash for Dummies" on the site. I'm really bad at trying to figure out stuff that has to do with grammar and stuff like that. :s

Hello all!  Sorry, have not posted in a while, as school has been particularly demanding as of late...  :P  Anyways, would it be possible for a transcription of the strange and arcane runes of the Speech of the Webmaster, Art?  grin  It seems that you had some comments and ideas you wished expressed...
Any contributions and/or decisions on your part would greatly help in acheiving the most accurate pronunciation guide possible for this language.
