Everything about Santharian Mentors

This thread deals with everything related to Santharian Mentors. If you don't have an idea what purpose a Mentor serves, you get the answers all here - however, you should have read the Introduction to a Dream: FAQs and Guidelines to Development first before you progress here. - If you have already and you'd like to take the challenge of becoming a member of the Santharian Development team, you're right here - just read on then!

What is a Mentor and do I need one?

If you want to become an offical member of the Santharian development team you need a Mentor (a guide and assistant) to introduce you into the team effort of creating a fantasy world that is the Santharian Dream. You then become his or her Apprentice.

A Mentor therefore is an already experienced member who is willing to dedicate time and energy to helping an Apprentice such as yourself to improve your entries, to give advice, and to guide you through your early contributions. When you are ready, you can become a member… just start making proposals and turning them into entries!

How do I get my personal Mentor?

In this very thread - if you scroll down just a bit -  you will see a list of Mentors, which are available to help newbies to get into the development side of the Dream. Mentioned there are also their areas of interest and specialities, so have a look around and see which person might suit you best. If you've decided to which person you think you'd fit best, just make a new thread here in the Newbie & Joining Requests Forum and state your case, mentioning your primary areas of interest and what Mentor you'd like to get assigned to. If the Mentor is ready to take a newbie (or a second one) at the time as his/her apprentice, then you'll get an ok, otherwise you'll have to look for a substitute. Well, just ask and we'll see

Note that if you pick a Mentor you don't have to develop only stuff, which this particular person has in his/her own interest list. However, your primary focus of development should be approximately in the same area.

How can I impress my Mentor?

To impress your Mentor and speed up your official acceptance to the development team, you should basically do what is expected from a member to get bonus points. Here's a short list:

- Do your work thoroughly - all the main sections required at an entry should be filled.
- Make sure to do your researches on a certain topic (Google is your friend!) and don't write just out of the blue.
- Use the search function on the site regularly to check references of already existing entries. If you're not sure about something: just ask at the Forum!
- Try to fill already existing gaps with your entry and help others that way to complement an entry.
- If you don't know what to do next, take a look at the Resources Forum, where people post suggestions.
- Try to integrate picture resources - there's nothing better than an illustrated entry!
- Be persistent. Follow your goal, don't back off if you stumble on a difficulty. Stick to what you've started and - on the other hand - don't start too many things at once, so you lose your focus.
- Listen to the given criticism carefully and update your entry accordingly. Give reasons why you don't want to change something, so that commenters know why you kept certain things.
- Last, and exceptionally important: Comment in detail on other entries and help others - thus you show that you are a team player. If you help others you can expect help in return!

Mentor Duties and Responsibilities •

Mentors are key persons in introducing newbies into the Santharian development process and therefore are required to have experience with developing themselves. They should have a good general knowledge of their self-defined areas of interests and on the process of how things work in Santharia. Mentors are usually long-term members, and if you feel fit for the position, you can become one as well.

Mentors are the persons apprentices can expect to look at their works, however, it is not the intention that other people wait for the Mentors to make their move and refrain from commenting themselves. Other team members should help to support the Mentors wherever they can. Whenever possible however, a Mentor should check the entries of his/her apprentices in detail, work with the apprentice if major difficulties arise, help to finish entries, give pointers on what would be needed in terms of embedding ideas properly into the Dream. If an entry an apprentice makes doesn't lie directly in the Mentor's area of expertise and it remains uncommented for a while, the Mentor should also ensure that the entry is checked by someone.

Apprentices should primarily address their Mentor if they encounter a problem, and it is encouraged that direct communication between Mentor and apprentice takes place if new projects need to be discussed. This can happen through the Forum, through e-mail, ICQ, MSN, AIM, Skype etc. - make sure to exchange addresses, ICQ numbers etc. to be able to establish contact with each other if you need something.

Mentors will discuss progress of their apprenticeship(s) at the Members Moot area of the Forum (invisible to non-members) and will eventually propose apprentices to become official members.

Should a Mentor have to deal with real life issues for a while and cannot fulfill the function, it lies in the Mentor's responsibility to pass on the mentorship temporarily to another person.

To be honest.. i have no idea which mentor would fit me best. I have a wide interest. I like to leave my mark and discover new things ( who doesnt? :) ), but describing something in an already established environment suits me fine as well.
Working together with someone to define a whole region with everything in it sounds to me like the perfect job :)

Since i can't make a decision here i guess that any mentor who has a spot open would be fine :)

Sincerely,

Patrick

p.s. i made 2 entries:
- The place Kreeswind
- The beast Rimmilch cow

Hey Wanderer,

Much as we appreciate your enthusiasm (which is more then welcome!), we are currently short on mentors. However, a bunch of us apprentices is writing their masterwork, therefore you may soon hear something of an open spot. For now, you can just go on with what you're doing, because you don't need a mentor to be a developper ;)

When I have some time, I'll go over your entries :)

Looks up, puts down his quill and nods at Irid

I've already started some entries of which i was awaiting feedback and i will continue to do so. I've read some of those masterworks and i have much to learn

As he gives her a smile he picks up his quill and resumes writing

Hi, since i'm new here, i would like to have a mentor to get me started. I thought of Silfer Darkflare because I've allways been favored mages/wizards over warriors.

Now, what do i want to do? Magical abilities/weapons and such. I find mages to be the most powerful of all, but some times they get to powerful, to easy.  angry Perhaps i could be a valuable member of your developerteam. I would really want to be a part of this project, and learn more of the world of Santharia. grin

Hello!  You don't need a mentor to start developing things.  In any case, most mentors are unable to take on more apprentices, mostly because they are too busy.

Also, I'd advise you to stay away from magic.  Magic in this world is very complicated, and there's quite a lot to learn before you could really develop anything in that area.  Perhaps you could start in some other field?  I think Artimidor would like to have more places described.

Since magic usually is complicated I'm not surprised.  :P Perhaps after a while when you guys think I'm ready.

I'm open to suggestions. Since I'm intrested in rpg and have been as long as I can remember I know how important every part is.
Describing places? That sound like a start.  grin
Any particular place in need of describing?

Manthria is the region being focused on at the moment, so you could try looking there.  Be sure to check with the developers first to make sure you're not going for something that's been reserved or otherwise off limits though.

If you would like to learn more about magic, perhaps you could have a look around the magic forum.  There's quite a bit of information there, though some of it might be rather scattered, and mixed up with outdated stuff.

No. Newbies need a place to come to and ask mentor-related questions, and Artimidor will delete these conversations after a while anyway.

hello, i need a mentor, i intend to do most of my work in the realms of magic, particuarly in the method of using magic to create natural scientific scenarios (Such as my idea of using magic to compress something enough for it to collapse into a black hole, therefore, ive found a way for a simple compression charm to be used as the important part of making a black hole.) although i do intend to do a bit of work in all other areas....

Hello, RJ!

First, we like people to introduce themselves in the Newcomers' Forum and tell us a bit about themselves.

Second, we appreciate them having done some reading up on the universe of Caelereth - at least the FAQs available on this Development Forum, more preferably some general browsing at www.santharia.com to get a feel for the universe and its contents.

Third, what you suggest is problematic in a number of ways.  This is 'pure' fantasy, ranging from low to high, but not straying into science fiction.   We have a very complex and sophisticated magic system, with only a few experts, and its functioning is currently still under debate.  Introducing anything novel into an imperfectly understood system is not suggested at this point.

If you are interested in this merely as a means to an end (read: role-playing) please try to work within the confines of what exists.  However, if you are interested in this fascinating, unique, and complicated world, please do familiarize yourself with its atmosphere and try to start with something a little less demanding while you get your 'sea legs'.

Thanks for your ideas, and hope to see some information and introduction in the Newcomers' thread soon!  You might also want to choose a suitably medieval/Santharian name if you intend to stay on and do any dev work, by the way... "Arjay" would be fine!  :)
