Title: Hi, I'm new
Post by: Mennon Balacazar on 03 August 2006, 03:36:44
Hi. My names Mike. I'm from Utah, in the USA. I really enjoy fantasy and writing and was wondering if I could join. I am interested in developing beast, races, cultures, people, and stuff of that nature. I also enjoy the study of warfare, strategy, and tactics and enjoy writing and developing stuff like that. I'm also going to be in a second year architecture(sp?) class which is concurent enrollement, so I also can work on stuff of that nature.

I guess it is only fair to warn you that I have 4 medical disorders which will affect my preformance. They are Tourettes Syndrome, OCD(Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), ADHD and Depresion.

Again, I'm really excited about this. I think it's a great idea and hope that I can help in any way possible.

Let me be first to welcome you Mennon. I've got friends with ADHD and my dad was affected by depression for a while so I know how tough it is to go through those things.

If you are interested developing some new cultures I would suggest you talk to Coren Frozenzephyr, one of the veteran members, about the Zhun who have lots of varying cultures that are scarcely developed. They are also quite a militaristic people ( I think I spelt that right) so they seem like your kind of guys.

*a door bursts open, and a slightly gruffy looking person walks into the main hall, brushing dead leaves from his head*

Oh, i'm sorry.. i wasn't aware we had a visitor.. you are here to work at the Compendium? Welcome, welcome! My name is Mira.. my apologies for my appearance, but it's been a busy day at the Herbarium gardens.

*Mira rummages through a cabinet nearby, and produces a plate of snacks, and some drinks*

May i offer you some refreshments? I'll have one of the attendants check for a spare room for you in a moment, but you might as well take some rest, i'm sure you traveled a long way to get here...

Hello and welcome from me as well, Mennon!

Thanks for your introduction, always good to know a little background about the person on the other side of the world wishing to join our Dream :) I'm sure there are a bunch of things where you could contribute - just have a look around and get accumstomed a bit with the world. Main focus of development is the Kingdom of Santharia, but there are also possibilities to elaborate stuff in Northern Sarvonia or Nybelmar as Decipher mentioned. Just see for yourself which tribe or region suits you best. In the Resources and Entry Proposals Forum (http://www.santharia.com/dev/index.php/board,28.0.html) you might also find something that you might want to work on.

I'm sorry to hear about your various medical disorders, but hope Santharian can be a place to make use of your creativity and perhaps help in this respect a bit. Just don't take e.g. criticism of entries too personally or something, keep in mind we're all working together on making this fantasy world as perfect as we possibly can, and it is a community project where we all work together towards the same goal :)

So once again: Welcome to the Dream, Mennon!

 Hello! My name is Kareesh Valendar and I've been here for awhile but haven't really...well....done much. But! That's changing! *points to basiloc in the herb-place-that-I-can't-spell*

I'm sure you'll find a place that you enjoy. For me, I'm in various locations. I'm working on stories, on herbs, and on a weapon. I stay faaaar away from magic. To each his/her own, I suppose.

Again, welcome to the Dream, my new fellow Dreamer. I hope you have a nice Dream. ;)

A most heartily welcome from my side as well, Mennon, make yourself at home here and *munch, gulp* (Thanks Mira, I needed that) enjoy our hospitality. Be sure to have a good look around the website and the forum and have your creative juices flowing once you start of adding your own ideas to the Dream.

Welcome from me as well... It's definitely great to have new people share about themselves and oooohhhh architecture - it's one of my current obsessions at the moment and I am even considering doing a degree in architecture in the future. I was hoping to be able to contribute to Santharian architecture some day WAY in the future. Haha. I like you already.

Well, I guess I now need a mentor. I was wondering if either Alysse or Coren could be mine. I think they're covering stuff that I would be interested in.

I'm going to be gone till saturday evening so I don't know when I'll be able to be on next. While I'm gone I'll try to work on two ideas that I have.

we will have to put this somewhere obvious...

We're fresh out of mentors.
Actually, im not sure about Alysse.. *checks* hmm, she has one at the moment, Ishmaelion, but it's possible she might be able to take on another apprentice.
Coren is probably to busy, he has two apprentices, and two more waiting for a place to become available.

BUT.... there is no reason why you could not work without a mentor. In fact, many people here do not have one, and still manage to deliver some fine entries. Everyone here is able to aid eachother in writing good articles, and most area's have one or two experts who are usually available to provide advice in more difficult situations.

Yep, we really need to see to have more mentors available...

Alysse has just recently given birth to child #4, so her online presence is quite understandably reduced, so I guess we shouldn't stress her now too much. Coren also has already two apprentices if I remember correctly. But as Miraran said - mentors aren't mandatory, we'll try to help you all with your first entries anyway.  If you have questions, just ask, if you have ideas what entries you'd like to write, let us know, Mennon! :azn:

Ok, I have a question real quick. I know there is know development intended for CYHALLOI at this moment, but would it be ok if I work on it?

Title: Re: Hi, I'm new
Post by: Artimidor Federkiel on 04 August 2006, 06:14:40
There are good reasons why Cyhalloian development isn't recommended at the moment. We are trying to elaborate more what we have already started in Sarvonia for example instead of making loose development here and there - instead we try to get history, places etc. done for connected areas.

Just thought I'd ask.  I don't know why, but Cyhalloi just draws me. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that it's the type of climate I enjoy.

Architecture?  Hey, maybe he can help with Ximax!

@Mina: Excellent idea :thumbup:

@Mennon: Be sure to browse around the Northern Sarvonian continent, where there's a lot of cold stuff as well, if that's what drew you to Cyhalloi. Besides that, even below the Tandala Highlands there's enough winter climate, so I'm sure you can find a place to explore your own ideas!

Mina: Ok, so what all needs to be done with Ximax. I won't be able to start anytime soon cause I don't have AutoCAD, so I'll have to see if I could work on it in school during my CAD class.

Gean: I think I'm going to focus my efforts on Northern Sarvonia. I do think that area does focus more on stuff I'm interested in.

I also have another question. While I was gone I watched some flint knappers. I would like to put this type of stuff in so I was wondering if there was any cultures that practice this.  I did a search and didn't see anything, but I thought I would check to make sure.

I guess Mina didn't actually mean CAD constructions, but more advice from a person who knows something about architecture. Though if you could construct a visible model that wouldn't hurt, but I don't know if it could be acomplished that easily. A model could at any rate serve one of our artists as blueprint to draw the building properly. But as I said: I don't know how much work that would be.

Flint knappers: We haven't an entry on flint knappers yet, so you could do something here. Maybe more primitive cultures could use them mainly, like the Doimo Nomads (http://www.santharia.com/tribes/humans/doimo.htm). Though no flint knappers we have something in that direction in Sarvonia as well, the Burning Stones (Magather) (http://www.santharia.com/compendium/burning_stones.htm).

Well, I'm willing to do whatever you need with Ximax.

With Knapping, what would I need for an entry on it? I also had an idea about the more advanced cultures using. Obsidian is the sharpest material known to man, but it's not overly strong. So I was thinking that maybe some cultures with magic could use it to harden the blade to a point that it was as hard a steel.

Well, you can take the mentioned entry of the Burning Stone (see above) as an example how such an entry could look like. You could cover the sections Appearance, Territory, Usages and History/Origin and - as it is something that exists here on Earth as well - you should do your researches on the net to gather information on that topic. Ideas so far which you've posted sound quite fine with me.  :azn:

The place to post it would be the Miscellaneous Forum (http://www.santharia.com/dev/index.php/board,47.0.html).

And you should mention in the 'historical development' of knapping that dwarves are believed to have used some of the earliest flint tools, though they seem to prefer to deny this when human scholars raise the subject...

Ask me for more on this later!

If you are interested in working on Northern Sarvonia, I could be tempted to take on another apprentice... :D Seriously, we could use a few people in the North.  As far as flintknapping goes, you might want to also consider non-human, lower sentience races (for instance, trolls) as well as more primitive humans.  In  any case, I'll keep my eyes open for your work and try to provide helpful commentary.

Welcome to the Dream!

Alysse: Well I would love to work on Northern Sarvonia, so if you feel up to having another apprentice I'd be more than willing to be it. I am currently thinking of a new creature that could possibly be a calvary mount for the Kuglimz

Artimidor: So I'm a little confused. Am I supposed to be using the Burning Stone entry as an example for an entry on knapping or obsidian?

The scheme you fine there, yes.  The sections which were covered there could be covered in your entry as well.
