Title: Historical city maps
Post by: Mina on 18 August 2012, 03:03:01
I'm not sure if this is the correct section to post this, but I found a potentially useful site: http://historic-cities.huji.ac.il/historic_cities.html (http://historic-cities.huji.ac.il/historic_cities.html)

It's a collection of historical city maps, mostly from Europe, some of which go as far back as the late 15th century.  Might be useful as reference material, or maybe even inspire something.   :)

I particularly like the ones from the Civitates orbis terrarum (http://historic-cities.huji.ac.il/mapmakers/braun_hogenberg.html#maps).  Not only are they quite pretty, they're also mostly from the late 16th century, which I think more or less falls within the time period we're aiming for with Santharia.  I should point out though, that a number of those cities appear to have converted their fortifications to the star fort (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_fort) style, which were designed to defend against gunpowder weapons and thus probably won't develop in Santharia.

That's a great and very useful link, Mina, I put it immediately in the Useful Links thread.

Those star-fortifications look stunning! I shall have to import some to Nybelmar ;)

That's a fantastic link, Mina. I had no idea all these maps were online.
