Title: The Remusian Tribe
Post by: Timeras on 01 June 2002, 21:31:00
Overview:
The Remusian Tribe of Northern Sarvonia. The Remusians are one of the "Ice Tribes" although unlike most of the other human tribes of Northern Sarvonia, the Remusians live in fortified villages and towns . The City of Remusiat (their main settlement) is Located north of the Gathorn Mts. on the southern coast of the bay of Calinth.

Appearance:
Remusians generally have dark hair and sunken dark-colored eyes, they are of typical height (about 1.8 peds), the men normally have beards. The women are shorter also with dark-hair and eyes. Their skin is weatherworn from the cold winds of their homelands which have carved as many deep folds into the faces of the elder as has the fight for survival and for food in this unforgiving region. All Remusians are very defensive, seeing their lands as holy and brutally slaughtering any who threaten the region.

Coat of Arms:
The Remusian coat of arms consists of the skyline of the capitol of Remusiat. Also above that is an image of The Forsaken Blade - the tribes symbol of power.( it is vertical ). The Background can be Red or black, depending on how it's being displayed. When on a flag it is Red, so that the image of the Forsaken blade does not blend in with a black background. If it is on a shield, standard, or tapestry, (which are meant to be viewed at close distance). Than the background is black, with a white outline between it and the sword.

Territory:
The Territory of the Remusian tribe consists of the land from the Heath of Wilderon to the wastes of Despair from west to east and from the northern Ice coast to the Heath of Wilderon in the south. They have three medium sized towns: Dorm-nak, Sorsokon, and Sudarok. And the large city of Remusiat. Most settlements, except Dorm-nak and Sudarok lie along the Iceland Coast as most Remusians supply themselves from the sea.

People:
The Remusians are mainly renowned for both their ability as warriors, especially archers, and for their fanatical attitude towards the defense of their lands. Magic in general is abhorred by them as most of their land was destroyed by it in the Remusian civil war. Although mages are not generally welcome, several groups have been spared, most notably: The Grey Order (see separate entry, coming soon). The Punishments for the practice of magic vary by area. They range from simple discrimination, to torture and death.

Occupations:
The common Professions of the Remusian Tribe include many that would be found in any other city in sorren. Although the tribes government is made up almost entirely of men, the civilization grants equal right to both sexes. Men are normally the warriors of Remusiat, although there has been more than one notable exception. Men also make up the majority of miners, fisherman, and as noted earlier, almost all of the power holders are male. However, Remusian women are known for their fantastic weaving and jewellery making abilitys. This making the general proffesion of smith about a 50/50 split gender wise.

Housing:
Dwellings in Remusiat vary greatly, from the small fur-covered huts of the slums, to the rich merchant's villas and the tall, slender, tower of Zoúmúnnfárónn - the Lord's residence . The vast majority of Remusian homes are made of stone or wood. The common house is a small three room building made of wood or stone with a narrow, fur-covered, wooden roof which is weighted with stones to prevent the strong winds to blow away the shingles. For the same reasons only few houses have more than one floor and except the guard towers and castles no building has more than two. For storage most buildings however have a cellar carved into the ground which often freezes over the long winter and is perfectly suited to keep the vast supplies for that long period considerably fresh. The houses have often only one big oven who is used for cooking as well as heating. The room with the oven is often kitchen and bedroom in one. In more advanced homes the oven is arranged in the middle of the house into the wall to heat several rooms at a time. Most houses of the peasants house several generations at once. The nobles in town own mostly several houses for themselves, stables and their servants, in the lands they often live in narrow but wide, circular stone towers that serve them as home and the nearby villagers as place for refuge in times of danger.

Defenses and Fortifications:
Most walls in Remusian territory, are simply wooden palisades (even the well sized town of Dorm-nak is protected by palisades) However the more modern fortifications surrounding the capitol of Remusiat, are actually great works of engineering. The inner defensive line consists of the double inner walls. Both are made of stone and are 10 peds thick. The Outer one leans outward at a 45 degree angle. The Outer defensive line consists of trenches, earthworks, towers with ballista emplacements and a five ped thick stone wall. The only area not protected by both walls is the Western gate, as it was damaged in an attack during the Fifth Orcish War. The orc siege engineers damaged the ground surrounding the gate so greatly that it fell away into the bay. A bridge was built soon after so the gate could remain functional. The bridge and gate are still protected by the outer wall of the inner line, and all defenses of the outer line.

Government:
In times past, the Remusians were ruled by an autocrat. The Remusian lord. However, reforms brought on after the war with the Tokarians have changed much. Today, the Council of Wardens, officials elected from among the nobility by their peers, rule over the majority of matters. The leaders of each city, known as Lóhrónns, each have a single vote for three candidates chosen by the current council. The Lóhrónns are more often than not, patriarchs of the strongest families in their individual area. Three other officials receive electoral powers; The Theocrat and Heirophant of the Church of Kor'och, and the current ruler of the Tokarians. (This vote has been known to have been chosen by outside influences on numerous occasions.)

Food:
As for farming, the Remusians do not live in a favorable environment. Most of their Agricultural food is obtained through trade. As for hunting, meat enjoyed by the Remusian tribe includes the Cuncu Sheep, and the Woolly Boar. However, by far the most important food source for them is fishing. Whaling is also practiced by the tribes braver sailors.

Trade:
Most of the more luxurious items including iron, gold, numerous kinds of gems, spices and also some food is obtained through trade from numerous sources. The Remusians main trade partners include the neighboring Tokarian tribe who trade furs and whale meat, the Kanapan who reach the northern lands often on dangerous and long routes through the Heath of Wilderon or around and on the Ice Sea. Some of the more friendly Orcs trade furs and dried meat at times. And in the summer months many Remusian merchants set sail to the south to bring precious goods back to the Homeland.

Clothing:
The poorer citizens wear dark fur coats and wool jerkins. The richer Remusians prefer clothes of soft - almost pastel - tones of red, brown and green. The Infantry and scout cavalry wear soft leather armor. The main cavalry wear studded leather, the heavy cavalry and commanders even chain mail where affordable. Only the nobles can afford bronze or steel plate armor, the armor of the Lord of Remusiat, chased with jewels and precious metals in a truly royal manner is a prime example. Fur coats are standard clothing as well but they vary from class to class. Peasant women normally dress similar to the men. The noblewomen however, would look very similar to a noblewoman of a southern tribe. And would probably own multiple, premium quality dresses and coats.

Weapons and Military:
The Defenders of Remusiat use a vast array of weapons, but here is a basic description from group to group.

-Wall Patrols: These are the main defenders of the city. They generally use barbed long spears decorated with their family banners and the powerful Remusian longbows.

-Cavalry: The Cavalry is it's only real offensive force. The cavalry use the same barbed and banner clad spears as well as broadswords and large shields.

-The Navy: The fleet is made up of about 20 small warships and transports (mainly for escort of their trading vessels)

-The Marines: The troops carried on the fleet also use the tribes signature longspears as well as broadswords or axes.

Class Status:
The classes of Remusian society consist of the lower class which is made up of peasants, slaves, laborers, also nicknamed slum-dwellers, the middle class is made up mostly of wealthy merchants and craftsman, and the upper class is made up of the nobles and the Lord. The Remusians living in areas away from the capitol follow the Lord or council when the dictions apply to them. But some have set up local governing bodies. No matter how much power he is robbed of, the Lord is still viewed as supreme ruler of the people.

Religion:
The Remusians worship Kor'och, (AKA The Winged Lord of the Eternal.) Kor'och is the god of creation and war, he is worshipped by all Remusians, without exception. Kor'och is normally pictured as a winged, hooded, warrior, riding a huge black horse. He carries a great axe and his beard is caked with blood, He is all you would expect from a god of war.

Festivals:
The only festival celebrated by the Remusians is the Drag'nas'or, The day of the Light. On this day ( 21st day of the month of the changing winds.) All Remusian dead of the year are remembered by burning every candle, torch, and brazier in the city ( bonfires are also often started on major street intersections). The Resulting light can be seen faintly from up to three leagues away.

Important Achievements:
Along with their many military victories, the Remusians established themselves as great architects and engineers with the construction of the Tower of Zoúmúnnfárónn.( lit. Great Home of the Sovereign. ) The Tower is made of polished Granite and Obsidian, with gigantic obsidian statues on each corner of the base. It is four dashes in height , and twenty five peds in width. Among the most notable of areas in the tower are The Armory of Lords, The Lord's Quarters, and the Secondary Guard's Barracks.

History:
Far in the past, before The War of the Chosen, the Mydisian tribe of Yamalquain flourished on the southern extremes of the so-called "Dragon Isle". They were constantly in combat with the Eilenachian empire, but after the Battle of Modocia, in which the Eilenachians hurled the most powerful magics imaginable at the unorganized tribe of Barbarians and they still managed to come out victorious, the Emperor, Alteth the Powerful, had an Idea. Raiders led by his own son captured and enslaved hundreds of thousands of Mydisians, and carried them back off to Linhir, the Eilenachian capitol. There, humans were bred selectively, the strongest and most intelligent of the offspring wer taught Eilenachian culture, and were transformed into the colonists of the Empire. The envoys of Eilenach blossomed in Northern Sarvonia, then came The War of the Chosen. The olny great mage among the "Remusians" or "children of the Empire" (This is in old Eilenachian, this language has been declared obsolete in favor of Styrash.) was known as Mirhan "The Just" called this becuase he was harsh, but not unfair to the few wrondoers of the Tribe. He was the unofficial leader of the colony, but Alteth of Modocia did not approve of his practices, and the Great Emperor set off to have his vengeance upon this Usurper. Both, he and Mirhan fought later at The Battle of Winds and Mirhan killed the Dead Lord with Alteth's own sword -"The Forsaken Blade"- but died of his own wounds soon after. Surod, a brave Remusian who had followed Mirhan into the war, took the sword with him which since then has been the symbol of Remusiat and played an important role in their history.

294 b.s. The Remusian Civil War.
The Third Sarvonian war brought much hardship to the people of the White Citadel. The Lord at the time, Kellmon, had agreed in a pact with the darkfriends, while many of the nobles were not willing to deal with these creatures at all despite the threat they posed for Remusiat as for the rest of Sarvonia. Most of the Remusians stayed neutral at first but the differences over the treaty and the growing demands of the darkfriends soon caused open conflict between the city factions. The ensuing war resulted in great destruction for the Remusian tribe and ended with the assassination of Lord Kellmon. Thousands died during the civil war. It also caused the tribes rule of avoiding the elves, because it was them who sent troops to steady the rule of Kellmon and order the slaughtering of all resisters to quell the resistance. It was not until the "Battle of Rhemir" when the Remusians finally defeated an army of Osther-Ocs, about 10 000 the Chronicles say, that made the darkfriends abandon their interest in Remusiat. Although it was long ago, the Remusian civil war will never be forgotten by the people of the White Citadel.

478 a.s. War with the Tokarian Tribe.
Of all the other Tribes of the Icelands coast, none has had such a strained relationship with Remusia as the Tokarians. Not so much a tribe as a loose confederation of villages, the Tokarians are without doubt the most aggressive of the Ice Tribes. In 452 a.s. the Remusian Lord Gloroch decided to annex the town of Rhemir, where the Remusian civil war ended, from the Tokarians. The Tokarians objected, and sent a small force of 1,000 men to defend the city, but Gloroch wanted the city, and he took it. The Tokarian warriors were massacred. The following war lasted for 5 years, and ended with the treaty of Hargarth. The Remusians were given Rhemir, and the ability to extract tribute from the Tokarians, the Tokarians were given the ability to exist, and to trade with the Remusians.

1654 The Fifth Orcish War was still a fresh and traumatizing memory and had taken a heavy toll on the city. The western gate had almost breached and the Remusians had little hope of the city surviving much longer. Then came news which shocked them all. Their scouts reported that an orcish army moved towards them at an alarming speed. Normally this wouldn't worry them because of their defenses, but with the western gate almost down they knew they had to act. A group of cavalrymen, under the Command of their lord Araman tracked the army for 3 days before he found them, they charged down a mist covered hill and trapped the orcs between them and a large lake. and crashed into the orcish ranks. Araman was almost immediately killed, but his son Timeras took command of the battle and defeated the Orcs who retreated in disorder. The Battle of the lake was the most devastating victory in Remusian History. Timeras returned with 32 men and 13 horses (out of 300 each) and were made heroes.Timeras was crowned lord in his father's place and presented with the Forsaken Blade. The Orcs have more or less stayed away from Remusiat since.

Hmmm... nice start but must it be Remusiat? :)
Because there are two bigger cities you can use for it as well.

Also I would widen up this tribe. Either they are the "Ice tribes"(all the tribes living in there) or at least they're an Ice tribe in a certain area like the Iceland coast or the peninsula of Iol. Making a tribe that only inhabits one town seems doubtful, better give them more room to work with.

The fortress(whatever the name will be and why) can be still the most important stronghold of the tribe but I would implicate the towns and cities that are on the map already. You need food and you might get difficulties in a rough environment so they'll be more scattered over the landscape to cover any source of food.

I'd rethink that with the fleet. Big ships would be in fact far more vulnerable in a sea with ice than smaller ones as they're less agile. You should also consider how important the sea is for them. Do they only want to fish in there (small ships are enough and no warships necessary)? Do they have traderoutes? Then they might need some ships but as said I guess smaller, more agile ships would fit better the environment...

Well, I changed the thing on the fleet and am thinking about trade routes (possibly to the Kanapan) and as for the ther two major citys in the region, I Thought about cahnging it to one of these citys but I didn't realy like the names. As for Hargarth
The Reason i dont like that is that the northern city in Diablo 2 was named Harogath so I dont want to be accused of Plagerism, and as for Searoth, I didnt think that fit because the people arn't really so dependant on the sea that they would name their city after it, but if im the only objecter than il change it though I'd prefer not.:(

Okay, but it is "Saeroth" and "Hargarth" so there's only as much Plagerism as you make out of it by content. I wouldn't be too concerned about that as long as you think up your own ways for your tribe.
I'm only pointing at these cities because "Hargarth" looks like a good place for a fortified town, I don't know how much hassle.

The rest is a fine start, I think.

Here are some more questions to the various sections just to give you some more things to think about:

Appearance: I normally describe here what the general Remusiat would look like when I'd meet him somewhere. You've some physical features, maybe hint something about their attitude and a general decription what's the most likely outfit he'd wear.

Coat of Arms: I made most/all of the Coats here on Santharia so just a general question. Why a sword and a circle? Normally people chose an animal, maybe a whale or maybe even a wolf would fit here. The sword might be there, too, though I wouldn't put it on the shield as the only symbol. Well, just my opinion from an conceptual point of view.

Territory: Why make them so small in place? When you have a fortified town it usually defends some kind of outback that is protected by it. Your tribe could inhabit all the Iceland Coast.

People: What impact has the fact that women may serve in military as well. What are the family structures? What kind of archers are they? (Longbow, riding... , etc.). Any other features than that?

Housing: Where do they get the marble from? What is the standard house despite the variations that might exist?

Clothing: What kind of trousers do they wear? Footwear? Shirts? Armor? What is the difference between a commoner's clothing and the one of a nobleman?

Weapons: Only thing is that it might be difficult to get Orcish warbows, maybe they developed something similar or use an own type of bow(longbow, whatever)? The navy sounds not that important to keep? I'd maybe make an own description about them when you want to describe the army these people have and how it works.

Government: Maybe add thes status of a citizen(rights he has or not has) and some more detail if you ind some.

These are just things togive you some more ideas what to think about. Not all of my question might be valid or need response. The entry just needs some more detail that me and others can imagine what kind of people these are.

My only rather serious suggestion is to widen their territory from some acres to one geographical distinguishable location(like the ICeland Coast). That of course, creates more questions but also opportunities(how are the lands ruled, who is in command in the smaller cities), how close are the cities aligned to each other? Such things! :)

Hope you don't throw the towel. As you can notice I have no objections about what you wrote, I just think it needs some more detail and finetuning and then it should turn out fine. :)

Timeras, do you have ICQ? Could be helpful to discuss things quickly. Tell me when you're finished for now...

Occupations: The common occupations among Remusians in order of least to most powerfull: Mage, Slave, Farmer/Laborer, Mercenary, Caftsman, Low-rank soldier, Merchant, High-rank soldier, Nobleman, Council Elder, Lord.

Housing: Dwellings in Remusiat vary greatly, from the small fur-covered huts of the slums, to the rich merchant's villas and the tall, slender, tower of Drapt'na'at - the Lord's residence . The vast majority of Remusian homes are made of stone or wood. Government and class status: The City of Remusiat is traditionally ruled totally by the Lord, but in more recent times The Council of Elders, composed of the oldest and wisest of the city, has taken more control over everyday life. However, in times of war the Lord can take full control of the city, but this power must be surrendered upon the return of more peaceful times. The classes of Remusan society consist of the lower class which is made up of peasants, slaves, laborers, also nicknamed slum-dwellers, the middle class is made up mostly of wealthy merchants and craftsman, and the upper class is made up of the nobles and the Lord. The Remusians living in areas away from the capitol follow the Lord or council when the disisons apply to them. But some have set up local governing bodys. Nomatter how much power he is robbed of, the Lord is still veiwed as supreme ruler of the people.

Among the most notable of areas in the tower are The Armory of Lords, The Lord's Quarters, and the Secondary Guard's Barracks.

History: Originally the Remusian tribe was one of the larger
in Northern Sarvonia, then came The War of the Chosen bringing with it their worst threat ever, The Infamous Dark Chosen, Alteth the Tyrant and his unholy weapon: The Forsaken Blade. Long ago the ancestors of the Remusians dwelled in the city of Sudarok, under the rule of a White Chosen known as "Mirhan the Just" but the First War which their name for the War of the Chosen brought many changes, including the total destruction of their homeland by "Alteth the Tyrant" (also known as the Dead Lord of Modocia in later times), who was a great warlord and the commander of one Greater Chosen's army. Both, he and Mirhan fought later at their leader's disposal at The Battle of Winds and Mirhan killed the Dead Lord with Alteth's own sword -"The Forsaken Blade"- but died of his own wounds soon after. Surod, a brave Remusian who had followed Mirhan into the war, took the sword with him which since then has been the symbol of Remusiat and played an important role in their history.

Looks better already but let your imagination flow freely, esspecially the "people" and "government" section could need some more detail how everything worked.
I'm not sure but you haven't covered all emphasized sections of the tribes template, yet(sticky topic in this forum).

Don't know but when you already had a good idea how the empire of yours should work you might adopt that in smaller scale here.(for the government place)

I guess you mean by your territory outlines a rough border from Abergarth to Rhemir.

The location of Remusiat is still kind of a problem. I would suggest to take the location of Hargarth and ask Artimidor if he would be willing to change the name of that town(if really necessary). But that should be all that should be altered in that area...

Art, I know you didn't want to change maps anymore but maybe this itzy-bitsy-tiny name? :)

I'd now try to flesh out what you have here, wording and such and some more detail wherever possible. If you need help I might assisst you with this or that section of the entry.
Also you might start a rough history of the tribe. When did they come there, when did they found what cities and possibly the five Orc wars.
Try to look up the existing history of the Northern Sarvonian continent to fit your history in. Don't wait to ask me when something is unclear.

Well I have been reading over stuff that's happened since I've been gone, thanks for watching over the Northlands for me Koldar, your wisdom is always needed.

Timeras: I have yet to truly meet you, I've gone through all of the things that you have written so far on the boards, and I have two questions for you.

Mainly, why the icelands area?  It is ill suited to truly support a large kingdom or empire at all.  The food supply in such a region would be rather scarce, which wouldn't allow for the development of a civilized people.  Secondly, having them here you have to constantly scale back on everything you want to do.  Why not pick some place like the Kingdom of Dorania (two islands off of Eastern Sarvonia, below the Isles of Quios).  There is of course no problem with them in the icelands if you prefer them there, as long as it makes sense of course.

As for the amounts of marble, steel, and wealth needed for your descriptions where would they get them?  Kanapan cannot supply trade anywhere except by sea to the Isles of Quios.  Cael'horteth might trade, but how do you get through the other nomadic ice tribes?

I don't mean to just step in here out of the middle of nowhere, just had a few thoughts on the matter is all.

Just to Timerias' assisstance, I suggested that place because it has many small towns and such on the map so an area where peoples seem to like living in fortified towns and villages for various reasons.
Art told me now several times that he doesn't want to change maps anymore so I think a tribe based on much fishing and few other sources of meat and grain would fit the map better than nomads...

I guess the problem with Dorania is a lack of conflict areas with orcs, at least if I get it right.

The Kanapans would be the logical choice for trade either by ship or by land(over the city of Basilon), but you're right both routes might be worth it to trade luxury goods but stones and such might be a bit out of the way. Maybe thinking here about a local source, but I guess there wouldn't be marble up there. Any suggestions for a different, beuatiful kind of stone?
My first impulse was Obsidian but do know.

Drogo, I guess you won't be on ICQ, yet? Miss the night-long discussions! ;)

hmmm. obsidion would be better anyway. First of all Drogo, I have long been awiting your thoughts and the main reason I chose the icelands coasts was because it seemed less developed thanmost other regions, I would have no problem moving the tribe to another region as long as it's cold and there are orcs around.

Well, well, I'm incredibly sorry but some more patience, please. I'm running at 200% currently, working 16 hours the day minimum and 18 hours the day normally so have "slight" problems to keep up on the boards and also Drogo is not back on a regular basis.

As I see it the entry is proceeding well, the two things that still need work or must be cleared up are the peoples' section (where I'd add more about these guys, traditions and way of living can be described there as well, at least one sentence seems to less to me) and you should clear up with Artimidor the thing with Remusiat, where this town is located and if it is possible to rename one of the towns of the map.

Atfer that I think this entry might go up though I don't know what others think. Can perhaps someone else post his/her suggestions here as well? I shouldn't be here after all, I should be working!

Details....More details :)

Right Timeras...I prepared to admit you've put a lot of effort into adapting this entry and I admire your persistance. So here's an official apology for giving you such a hard time when you started.

You could really do with going to town on apperance, about the people....You have them well thought out in your head....So let that show! What are they good at and why? Why are there so many beggars hinted at in your sig? The people section is your chance to draw people into what life in the city is like, so take it.

Same with housing.... What do people keep in those two rooms, what are the functions of the rooms? How many people live there? Just stuff like that. Try and draw people in. You can't go into enough detail!

Good start...just flesh it all out

This doesn't read nice...

For copyright issues I think that Santharia claims the right to use the stuff that gets uploaded on the the site because it would be pretty dumb if someone shows up after years and demands his stuff to be put down because he's suddenly making money with it. Beyond that at least in Germany the creator of something always stays the owner of the things he created...

Timeras I would clear up this issue with your friend and decide together what to do. In general the entry is still lacking detail. You describe many things in one sentence. Take these and make more out of it, but as said clear that up with your friend first!

Post by: Koldar Mondrakken on 08 July 2002, 03:18:00
Hi, I have found the time to read through your entry and added some suggestions and changes. I guess this coming along quite nice. I added my questions and suggestions in bold letters… see ya’!

Overview: The Remusian Tribe of Northern Sarvonia.

Appearance: Remusians generally have dark hair and sunken dark-colored eyes, they are of typical height (about 2 peds), the men also normally have beards. The women are shorter also with dark-hair and eyes. All Remusians are very defensive, seeing their lands as holy and brutally slaughtering any who threaten the region.

Coat of Arms: The Remusian coat of arms consists of the large silhouette of a sword ( it is a huge 2 handed greatsword, surprisingly uncharacteristic of the tribe ) stuck out of the ground. The symbol is said to represent the Defensive nature of the tribe, but this attitude didn't come about until the Remusian Civil war in 294 b.s. and the symbol of the grounded sword has been used since the War of the Chosen. Many Remusians have guessed that the symbol holds more than meets the eye.

Territory: The Territory of the Remusian tribe consists of The land from the Heath of Wilderon to the wastes of Despair (west-east) and from the northern coast to the Heath of Wilderon (north-south). They have three medium sized towns: Dorm-nak, Sorsokon, and Sudarok ( after there ancient homeland ). As well as 12 small villages and of course The large city of Remusiat.

People: The Remusians are mainly renowned for both their ability as warriors, especially archers, and for their fanatical attitude towards the defense of their lands. Magic in general is abhorred by them as most of their land was destroyed by it in the Remusian civil war.
Maybe explain what is their stance to mages then. Are they executed, exiled, spit on,…?

Housing: Dwellings in Remusiat very greatly, from the small fur-covered huts of the slums, to the rich merchant's villas and the tall, slender, tower of Drapt'na'at (the lord's residence). The vast majority of Remusian homes are made of stone and/or wood. The common house (inside the city): a small three room stone building with a fur covered wooden roof.

Food: As for farming, the Remusians do not live in a favorable enviroment. Most of their Agricultural food is obtained through trade. As for hunting, meat enjoyed by the Remusian tribe includes the Cuncu Sheep, and the Woolly Boar.
What is about fishing?

Trade: Most of the more luxurious items including steel, gold, numerous kinds of gems, and also some food is obtained through trade from numerous sources. The Remusians main trade partners include the Kanapan, the northernmost provinces of The Santharian Kingdom, and some of the more friendly Orcs.
The Santharian Kingdom? I’d guess only via two or three other stations like Santharia->Quios->Kanapan->Remusiat. There’s quite a distance and much hostile territory between the Remusians and Santharia so I don’t think there can any direct trade happen on a regular basis.

Clothing: The poorer citizens wear dark fur coats and wool jerkins. The richer Remusians prefer clothes of soft (almost pastel) tones of red, blue and green. The Infantry and scout cavalry wear soft leather armor. The main cavalry wear studded leather. The heavy cavalry and commanders use bronze plate armor with chain mail skirts, and the Lord and nobles wear heavy steel plate armor chased with jewels and precious metals. (all classes wear fur coats over their armor)

Weapons and Military: The Defenders of Remusiat use a vast array of weapons, but I will give basic description from group to group. Wall Patrols: These are the main defenders of the city. They generally use barbed long spears decorated with their family banners and the powerful Remusian longbows. Cavalry: The Cavalry is it's only real offensive force. The cavalry use the same barbed and banner clad spears as well as broadswords and large shields. The Navy: The fleet is made up of about 20 small warships and transports (mainly for escort of their trading vessels) The Marines: The troops carried on the fleet also use the tribes signature longspears as well as broadswords or axes.
Cavalry is difficult to maintain, especially in northern territories. Maybe some more detail on that one?  I guess horses in that climate must be smaller, sturdy and with a high endurance but possibly not huge war horses who need much food and are more affected by cold.
Are your heavy cavalry meant to fight like European knights? Because they were the heaviest cavalry unit but also the most specialized in the Middle Ages. Maybe lighter armoured than knights in full plate armor and more used as quick-response-force, Scouts and for hit’n’run attacks than for a massive front assault, practiced by medieval knights.

Government and class status: The City of Remusiat is traditionally ruled totally by the Lord, but in more recent times The Council of Elders (composed of the oldest and wisest of the city) has taken more control over everyday life. However, in times of war the Lord can take full control of the city, but this power must be surrendered upon the return of more peaceful times. The classes of Remusan society consist of the lower class which is made up of peasants and slaves also nicknamed slum-dwellers, the middle class is made up mostly of wealthy merchants, and the upper class is made up of the nobles and the Lord.
What is about craftsmen? Smiths and so on… are they highly valued? Are they referred as second class or third class? Also where do the slaves come from. Prisoners of War? People who couldn’t pay their debts? Are they treated like “slaves” with no rights at all or at least as servants…

Important Achievements: Along with their many military victories, the Remusians established themselves as great architects and engineers with the construction of The Tower of Drapt'na'at.( lit. Home of the Great. ) The Tower is made of Marble and Obsidian, with 4 gold statues on each corner of the base. It is five dashes in height, and twenty five peds in width. Among the most notable of areas in the tower are The Armory of Lords, The Lord's Quarters, and the Secondary Guard's Barracks.

History: Originally the Remusian tribe was one of the largest in Northern Sarvonia, then came The War of the Chosen bringing with it their worst threat ever, The Infamous Dark Chosen, Alteth the Tyrannical and his unholy weapon: The Forsaken Blade. Long go the ancestors of the Remusians dwelled in the city of Sudarok, under the rule of a White Chosen known as "Mirhan the Just" but the First War (their name for the War of the Chosen) brought many changes, including the total destruction of their homeland by "Alteth the Tyrant" (also known as the Dead Lord of Modocia) but one Remusian, a man named Surod, joined a light chosen's army and fought at The Battle of Winds. However Mirhan was also at the battle, he killed The Dead Lord with Alteth's own sword "The Forsaken Blade" . Surod took the sword which since has been the symbol of Remusiat and played a large part in their history. Since then there have been several wars with the orcs and many attempted sieges of Remusiat. However, nothing else real important happened until...

What about the foundation/destruction of some towns. Some details on major shifts in the balance of power in the region, change of dynasties, such stuff?

294 b.s. The Remusian Civil War. The Third sarvonian war brought much hardship to the people of the White Citadel.
after he massive orcish ad barbarian assault on the Erpheronian kingdom, many remusians served as mercenaries to both sides of the conflict. The Lord at the time, Kellmon, had sworn support to the darkones, while many of the nobles had decided to support the humans to the south. This difference in opinion caused open conflict between the city's factions. The ensuing war resulted in the destruction of about half of the tribes farmlands and the assassination of Lord Kellmon. Almost 500,000 died during the civil war. This also caused the tribes rule of avoiding the elves, because it was them who convinced the lord to give his support to the darkones. Although it was long ago, the Remusian civil war will never be forgotten by the people of the White Citadel.
Hmmm… I fear -as with trade- the Remusians are too far away to support the Santharian kingdom because they hardly knew anything about it. However the rest of the story seems fine, especially that the leader at that time was corrupted by the darkfriends and thus pacified their flank and brought them supply. Maybe the people where in generally not fond of dealing with darkelves who might have waged war against them before. Maybe some other dark things done by the elves (demand of soldiers, bloody rituals, …) might have ignited the civil war.

1654 The Fifth Orcish War had taken a heavy toll on the city. A group of cavalrymen, under the Command of their lord Araman tracked the army for 3 days before he found them, they charged down a mist covered hill and trapped the orcs between the them and a large lake. and crashed into the orcish ranks. Araman was almost immediately killed, but his son Timeras took command of the battle and defeated the Orcs. The Battle of the lake was the most devastating victory in Remusian History. Timeras returned with 112 men and 13 horses (out of 6000 each) and were made heroes. Timeras was crowned lord in his father's place and presented with the Forsaken Blade. The Orcs have more or less stayed away from Remusiat since.
Is this b.S. or a.S., btw?

Their skin is weatherworn from the cold winds of their homelands which have carved as many deep folds into the faces of the elder as has the fight for survival and for food in this unforgiving region. All Remusians are very defensive, seeing their lands as holy and brutally slaughtering any who threaten the region.

Maybe add how their beards are shaved and maybe somewhat more about the women. ;)  I changed the height as 2 peds are more than nowadays people's average height, about 6 feet I guess.

I know that is difficult but maybe a different symbol. I already saw too many swords on shields here and they're generally a bad symbol on a shield. Don't know what else would be approbiate. Ah, and the colors of the Coat of arms are important as well! Currently looks like the Milkengrad CoA(see it's places entry)thus some differences should be pointed out.

Territory: The Territory of the Remusian tribe consists of the land from the Heath of Wilderon to the wastes of Despair from west to east and from the northern Ice coast to the Heath of Wilderon in the south. They have three medium sized towns: Dorm-nak, Sorsokon, and Sudarok.  And the large city of Remusiat.
Most settlements, except the town of .... and ... lie along the Iceland Coast as most Remusian supply themselves from the sea.

Deleted the amount of villages as everyting shown on the map is at least a fortified town, a harbour or anything else significant so no villages are shown. And haven't checked the map but I guess there are only one or two inland towns, they might be mentioned.

People: The Remusians are mainly renowned for both their ability as warriors, especially archers, and for their fanatical attitude towards the defense of their lands. Magic in general is abhorred by them as most of their land was destroyed by it in the Remusian civil war. Although mages are not generally welcome, several groups have been spared, most notably: The Grey Order. The Punishments for the practice of magic vary by area. They range from simple discrimination, to torture and death.

Housing: Dwellings in Remusiat vary greatly, from the small fur-covered huts of the slums, to the rich merchant's villas and the tall, slender, tower of Drapt'na'at  - the Lord's residence . The vast majority of Remusian homes are made of stone or wood.
The nobles in town own mostly several houses for themselves, stables and their servants, in the lands they often live in narrow but wide, circular stone towers that serve them as home and the nearby villagers as place for refugee in times of danger.

Most places of the Remusians are fortified. I'd suggest to point out how and why. I guess wooden palisades are the norm, entrenched by stone here and there to the stone walls of the few bigger cities and castles. I have added much here. Take what you want, change what you like, delete what you disliek . ;)

Food: As for farming, the Remusians do not live in a favorable environment. Most of their Agricultural food is obtained through trade. As for hunting, meat enjoyed by the Remusian tribe includes the Cuncu Sheep, and the Woolly Boar. Although fishing is practiced regularly, it does not provide much food for the tribe.

I'd make fishing an important issue for these guys. It is at least a better source than hunting. You can also include the hunting for whales and or seals, though I at least hope the later exist in Sorren.

Trade: Most of the more luxurious items including iron, gold, numerous kinds of gems, spices and also some food is obtained through trade from numerous sources. The Remusians main trade partners include the Kanapan  who reach these northern land often on dangerous and long routes through the Heath of Wilderon or around and on the Ice Sea. Some of the more friendly Orcs trade furs and dried meat at times. And in the summer months also the Remusian merchants set sail to the south to bring precious goods from the so

I don't if you want to do any tribe later-on or if you're well fed with the work with this one but maybe include some of the neighboring cities (which belong possibly to other Ice tribes or little realms) into your trade.Maybe only the northern islands have colonies of seals, maybe they can also whale to greater extent... some additional thoughts about it.

Clothing: The poorer citizens wear dark fur coats and wool jerkins. The richer Remusians prefer clothes of soft - almost pastel - tones of red, brown and green. The Infantry and scout cavalry wear soft leather armor. The main cavalry wear studded leather, the heavy cavalry and commanders even chain mail where affordable
Only the Lord and the nobles can afford bronze or steel plate armor, the armor of the Lord of Remusiat chased with jewels and precious metals in a truly royal manner. Fur coats are a standard clothing as well but they vary from class to class, only the Lord wearing a fur of white hermelin(?).

And the woman? Dresses, trousers, skirts?

Hmmm, you could remove the navy if you don't have maritime foes. You only supply armies you really might need it some day. You could make it more a local affair. In the middle ages ships were easily outfitted for war by adding wooden turrets to stern and bow, that with a dozen archers and soldiers was often enough...

How are the rural areas ruled? What is the status of the Lord of Remusiat in other towns?(King-like or one among many) Is there a Council of Nobles maybe ruling over all the territory of the Remusian deciding about things like peace and war and appointing the new Lord/Leader?

Important Achievements: Along with their many military victories, the Remusians establised themselves as great architects and engineers with the construction of the Tower of Drapt'na'at.( lit. Home of the Great. ) The Tower is made of Marble and Obsidian, with 4 gold statues on each corner of the base. It is five dashes in height (that are 500 metres and multiple times higher than any building in nowadays!! A three floor house is about 15 metres/peds high. Maybe take that as reference.) , and twenty five peds in width. Among the most notable of areas in the tower are The Armory of Lords, The Lord's Quarters, and the Secondary Guard's Barracks.

other than the dimensions of the tower maybe consider the stones used, maybe a special extraordinary hard and nice granite would fit better than marble which must be extremely expensive and has to be imported. For the same reason I'd not put the golden statues outside the tower. Maybe use both to decorate the interior of the Meeting/Throne room as a sign of great power of the LOrd of Remusiat

Well, modified the last paragraph, added some details, removed otehrs, tried to add some tension to it and such. Hope it fits.

Sp the Remusians stayed neutral at first but the differences over the treaty and the growing demands of the darkfriends soon caused open conflict between the city factions.

Much rewritten, some things added because it is difficult to fit the history without much background. Hope you read that background overtime though! ;)  Mainly rewrote it the way that the Remusians were only part of the preparations of the darkfriends, an ally to pacify their flank during the war...

1654 The Fifth Orcish War
was still a fresh and traumatizing memory and had taken a heavy toll on the city.

Reduced numbers cause I thought it would seem more bravely that way and I doubt that you can rally an army of 6000 in less than weeks. I suspect that the only reason for victory was plainly surprise that 'caused disorder among the Orcs who retreated without knowing what in fact hit them. If they'd known they'd have possibly won. But this the way things like bloody wars are lost so I guess nothing unusual.

The paragraph "Occupations" is missing. it should include what the people are doing and possibly where (rural<-> urban jobs), who is doing it and so on. Also include, ... yes!, the women, what their part in there is... ;)
That's it for now! Hope you don't mind my alterations!

*Casts his dreadful shadow.*

Problem with the territory. It can't come any closer than Abergarth already is to the Wastes of Despair. You can't enter them. I'm not sure why there are trees drawn outside it, because it's totally barren around it. Only in the center is oddly vegetated. And as far as anyone is concerned, that could very well be a myth. Because you can't enter them.

And why do you think so, Tarquet? The wastes of Despair are wastes anyway so none would want to live there. Where you draw the borderline is not very important in not populated regions. To whom the settlements belong is important.
As there's a river flowing just north of the Wastes I guess that would be the best landmark for the southern border.

Despite that I do not really get the point... none wants to live in a place named like that! ;)

Yea, the river works. The horizontal one for above, and where one cuts nearly vertically down, even though it stops at the horizontal one, just trace it down. That would be a good western on. Then the coast on the east. And where the zoomed in map ends south. Let's say, once those points are crossed, you'll black out and wake up beyond them again.

Okay, now what is this all about? Tarq, the Remusians have NO settlements in the wastes of Despair. And the river would make a fine borderline.

What is the general concept of teh Tokarians, did they get conquered by the Remusians, etc., or a independant tribe?

Post by: Timeras on 18 July 2002, 17:32:00
Overview: The Remusian Tribe of Northern Sarvonia.

Appearance: Remusians generally have dark hair and sunken dark-colored eyes, they are of typical height (about 1.8 peds), the men normally have beards.

Coat of Arms: The Remusian coat of arms consists of the skyline of the capitol of Remusiat. Also above that is an image of The Forsaken Blade - the tribes symbol of power.( it is vertical ). The Background can be Red or black, depending on how it's being displayed. When on a flag it is Red, so that the image of the Forsaken blade does not blend in with a black background. If it is on a sheild, standard, or tapastry, (which are meant to be veiwed at close distance). Than the background is black, with a white outline between it and the sword.

Most settlements, except Dorm-nak and Sudarok lie along the Iceland Coast as most Remusians supply themselves from the sea.

People: The Remusians are mainly renowned for both their ability as warriors, especially archers, and for their fanatical attitude towards the defense of their lands. Magic in general is abhorred by them as most of their land was destroyed by it in the Remusian civil war. Although mages are not generally welcome, several groups have been spared, most notably: The Grey Order (see seperate entry, coming soon). The Punishments for the practice of magic vary by area. They range from simple discrimination, to torture and death.

The common house is a small three room building made of wood or stone with a narrow, fur-covered, wooden roof which is weighted with stones to prevent the strong winds to blow away the shingles. For the same reasons only few houses have more than one floor and except the guard towers and castles no building has more than two.

Defenses and Fortifications: Most walls in Remusian territory, are simply wooden palisades (even the well sized town of Dorm-nak is proteced by palisades) However the more modern fortifications surrounding the capitol of Remusiat, are actually great works of engineering. The inner defensive line consists of the double inner walls. Both are made of stone and are 10 peds thick. The Outer one leans outward at a 45 degree angle. The Outer defensive line consists of trenches, earthworks, towers with ballista inplacemaents and a five ped thick stone wall. The only area not protected by both walls is the Western gate, as it was damaged in an attack during the Fifth Orcish War. The orc seige engienes damaged the ground surrounding the gate so greatly that it fell away into the bay. A brigde was built soon after so the gate could remain functional. The brigde and gate are still protected by the outer wall of the inner line, and all defenses of the outer line.

Food: As for farming, the Remusians do not live in a favorable environment. Most of their Agricultural food is obtained through trade. As for hunting, meat enjoyed by the Remusian tribe includes the Cuncu Sheep, and the Woolly Boar. However, by far the most important food source for them is fishing. Whaling is also practiced by the tribes braver sailors.

Trade: Most of the more luxurious items including iron, gold, numerous kinds of gems, spices and also some food is obtained through trade from numerous sources.

Clothing: The poorer citizens wear dark fur coats and wool jerkins. The richer Remusians prefer clothes of soft - almost pastel - tones of red, brown and green. The Infantry and scout cavalry wear soft leather armor. Peasant women normally dress simalar to the men. The noblewomen however, would look very similar to a noblewoman of a southern tribe. And would probobly own multiple, premium quality dresses and coats.

Religion: The Remusians worship Kor'och, (AKA The Winged Lord of the Eternal.) Kor'och is the god of creation, he is worshipped by all Remusians, under penalty of death. Kor'och is normally pictured as a winged, hooded, warrior, riding a huge black horse. He carries a great axe and his beared is caked with blood, He is all you would expect from a god of war.

Festivals: The only festival celebrated by the Remusians is the Drag'nas'or, The day of the Light. On this day ( 21st day of the month of the changing winds.) All Remusian dead of the year are remembered by buring every candle, torch, and brazier in the city ( bonfires are also often started on major street intersections). The Resulting light can be seen faintly from up to three leagues away.

Important Achievements: Along with their many military victories, the Remusians establised themselves as great architects and engineers with the construction of the Tower of Drapt'na'at.( lit. Home of the Great. ) The Tower is made of polished Granite and Obsidian, with gigantic obsidian statues on each corner of the base. It is four dashes in height , and twenty five peds in width. Among the most notable of areas in the tower are The Armory of Lords, The Lord's Quarters, and the Secondary Guard's Barracks.

I think the entry is nearly ready. At the Occupations section do not say what exist but who does what.
What jobs are respected professions?(Smith, fishermen?)
What jobs are done by women what by men?(generally spoken)
Some of that stuff.

Under Fortifications you mention the outer wall outleaning by 45 degrees. What does that mean?

Like that?

Don't know, I think normal medieval castle walls were slightly built this way but I think not more than 10, 15 degrees, more and the structure gets extremely instable I guess.

Are the Tokarians a minority living among the Remusians then? Still a bit unsure. If they're an own tribe I fear a second entry marathon is coming! ;)

If you take care of this few things I'll suggest to make this entry come up next time... maybe proofread it again to get rid of annoying wordings that might have happened but that would be all for now.

Post by: Timeras on 26 July 2002, 13:17:00
about the wall, that is one of the main things that has kept remusiat safe from the orcs. it can lean out so far because it has a deep foundation and is very thick. I mean if you go back in our own history, how many castles would have survived if the enemy couldn't get over the walls?

Overview: The Remusian Tribe of Northern Sarvonia.

Appearance: Remusians generally have dark hair and sunken dark-colored eyes, they are of typical height (about 1.8 peds), the men normally have beards.

If it is on a shield, standard, or tapestry, (which are meant to be viewed at close distance). Than the background is black, with a white outline between it and the sword.

Although mages are not generally welcome, several groups have been spared, most notably: The Grey Order (see separate entry, coming soon). The Punishments for the practice of magic vary by area. They range from simple discrimination, to torture and death.

Occupations: The common Professions of the Remusian Tribe include many that would be found in any other city in sorren. Although the tribes government is made up almost entirly of men, the civilization grants equal right to both sexes.

Housing: Dwellings in Remusiat vary greatly, from the small fur-covered huts of the slums, to the rich merchant's villas and the tall, slender, tower of Drapt'na'at - the Lord's residence . The vast majority of Remusian homes are made of stone or wood.

Defenses and Fortifications: Most walls in Remusian territory, are simply wooden palisades (even the well sized town of Dorm-nak is protected by palisades) However the more modern fortifications surrounding the capitol of Remusiat, are actually great works of engineering.

Clothing: The poorer citizens wear dark fur coats and wool jerkins. The richer Remusians prefer clothes of soft - almost pastel - tones of red, brown and green. The Infantry and scout cavalry wear soft leather armor.

Weapons and Military: The Defenders of Remusiat use a vast array of weapons, but here is a basic description from group to group.

No matter how much power he is robbed of, the Lord is still viewed as supreme ruler of the people.

Religion: The Remusians worship Kor'och, (AKA The Winged Lord of the Eternal.) Kor'och is the god of creation and war, he is worshipped by all Remusians, without exception. Kor'och is normally pictured as a winged, hooded, warrior, riding a huge black horse. He carries a great axe and his beard is caked with blood, He is all you would expect from a god of war.

Festivals: The only festival celebrated by the Remusians is the Drag'nas'or, The day of the Light. On this day ( 21st day of the month of the changing winds.) All Remusian dead of the year are remembered by burning every candle, torch, and brazier in the city ( bonfires are also often started on major street intersections). The Resulting light can be seen faintly from up to three leagues away.

Important Achievements: Along with their many military victories, the Remusians established themselves as great architects and engineers with the construction of the Tower of Drapt'na'at.( lit. Home of the Great. ) The Tower is made of polished Granite and Obsidian, with gigantic obsidian statues on each corner of the base. It is four dashes in height , and twenty five peds in width. Among the most notable of areas in the tower are The Armory of Lords, The Lord's Quarters, and the Secondary Guard's Barracks.

Ok, now to answer your questions...

I'll do the occupations

As for the tokarians, they are like a minority. They are treated with contempt and hatred, I guess you could say they kinda have an (early) nazi-jew kinda thing. But they don't kill them.
The Remusians arn't genocidal.

I do want to warn you, Timeras... if this is any way similar to the Comic you are making, you need to realize that Santharia will own the Copyright. Your book may already be created but is it copyrighted?

This entry will have your name, but Santharia will own it.

I just worry about this...

Anyway. I read the entry. This seems a very war-oriented tribe with little actual culture, almost barbarians. Is that they way you want them portrayed?

You may also want to break up each of the sub-categories with paragraphs. Another suggestion is to remove personal references ( such as ' I'). This is meant to be almost a historical entry; an encyclopedia. So if you wrote it that way, it would be similar to all the entries already made.

Ahm, it's getting late, I'm going to go.
I may read it again later.

As gfar as I know (if I say anything stupid, Art, correct me!) Santharia only demands to have an usage right on what comes up here that none can come and demand from us to remove his stuff(ripping pieces out of this world) because he suddenly makes money.
At least in germany it is even impossible to sell all your rights on your work so I guess the only thing to remember is that anything coming onto this site cannot be removed  without the agreement between Santharia and the creator of the work in question.

The creator is still the owner of the work and can do other stuff with it as he wishes.

Hey, I don't think they're that barbaric, Elfexpert! (feels like starting a flmaewar between different race people) ;)

Well, the other things with the 'i' and such should be still adjusted then but the rest seems fine if I'm right.

Yup, Koldar is right here. In general you can do with your work what you want, cause it's your creation (also e.g. if you draw a picture, Viresse). Though if you contribute to the site, the contribution should remain at the site, even if you decide someday that we're all stupid and you decide to do something else etc. In this (hopefully unlikely) case the done work will remain Santharian property. I'll have to set up a form for that which every Santharian should sign so that we won't run into any problems here.

However, I guess the main problem Viresse tries to point out is that Timeras is building up his realm up there and plans it on being for the most part self-efficient, so that he can use it at his comic perhaps as well etc. and that the development in the Santharian (Sarvonian here) context is not prevailing. This is what I see to which Viresse objects.

Well, I can understand Viresses concerns and would like to emphasize that you should keep the Sarvonian context in mind, and that you should try to integrate it all as best as you can with the rest of the world. There's still a lot to do here. In fact due to Drogo's absence I understand that this isn't easy at the moment, because important things of the north aren't elaborated yet. Anyway, just keep in mind that the Santharian Dream is more than self-efficient kingdom building up north, Timeras, so there's still a lot of work to do even if the entry will be preliminary finished. The hard work then will just have started when the entry is up.

I've already written a more direct mail to Drogo that he'll lose his Northern Sarvonian territories if he can't give us more directives on what he wants to have where etc. This is one of the most important issues we'll have to solve soon.

Well, as far as I know the comic has been canceled. But if me and Koji and Talos and Dragor... etc (The Oradoch team) ever do do anything. It will be The Remusian Empire, more desert dwelling romans than fur wearing barbarians. As for the "removing it from the site." WILL NEVER HAPPEN. And as for the "I" things... Ok, I reformed the government section to a system that WORKS, changed the "Tower of Drapt'na'at" to the "Tower of Zoúmúnnfárónn, as I have decided to abandon the idea of an entire language, in favor of a Styrash derivitive, which more accuaratly reflects the tribes origens as a "experiment" of the Eilenachians. Also, I shed more light on the tribe's afor-mentioned origens. :)
