1  Santharian World Development / Miscellaneous / Classes on: 09 July 2002, 10:19:00
How I view classes, or the lack thereof...

first off I don't like having restrictions on players.  I want to see people to always have the ability to change and do other things.  If we have classes I see them not determining what equipment you can wear or what weapon you can wield.

However I do so there being limitations based on stats.  If your not strong enough to lift a sword you can't wield it.

As far as classes go...  If we have a thief class, someone can be called a thief becuase their highest 2 or 3 skills are thief skills (lockpicking, stealing) etc.

skills being based on use will allow someone to change classes simply by using other skills more.  Since I plan on increasing the rate of skill gain of skills in the current class then a thief will tend to be a thief, but not necessarily.

I hope this makes things a bit more clear.

2  Santharian Game Projects / General Game Discussions & Newbie Area / Sorry on: 26 October 2002, 15:44:00
Sorry, I didn't mean to stop the development on this thing by mentioning a map or anything.  I have been thinking a bit about the design and I think maybe the background to this webpage might work well for the background around the controls in the game while playing.

We have just a few more weeks to work on The Lands of Sorren before focusing heavy on the mud once again.  I would like to see some client side improvements this time around.  Suggestions, graphics, project management assistence appreciated.

I think doing a different picture for each room, or anything like that would be very complex and hard.  It wouldn't bother me if we had no pictures at all.  But when/if you guys decide to do these unit portraits for example it would be good to have some consistancy and do unit pictures for all units.

That's just my idea.  I didn't explain the map thing very well.  The basic idea was to have a top view when in the wilderness only.  It wouldn't be used inside other zones since there is no coordinate system there yet.

Actually I was thinking about a pixel by pixel representation of the zone.  Where each collor is a different room type.  Maybe a path is brown, grass is green, cities are black with an grey fence around them

6  Santharian Game Projects / General Game Discussions & Newbie Area / A slightly revised version. on: 25 August 2002, 18:11:00
I didn't mean at all what you had was bad.  This is more of what I was thinking, and since I did this I have thought about a couple of other things.  Like a map when in the wilderness.

Anyway here is an idea.  We could make it so that the compass is clickable.  Putting it right beside the send button would be convenient for this.  The skills bar at the left would swap out according to what left menues were selected.

Anyway click image for a larger version

When I play a game the graphics may catch my attention, but there are several elements that keep me playing it for years.  Most are built into the game structure itself and are things like being able to build your own area inside the game, such as a house.  There are two ways a client contributes to this.  The first is by ease of use (not very clumsy), and the second feature is customizability.  I'm hoping the ealiases and macros will help with the customizablility a lot.  Buttons and meters on the screen could be "scripted" so various things control them.

I think the above image is forgetting about some things that would make the game easier and friendlier such as inventory, enemy condition, equipment, stats, skills, spells, quickbuttons, formation(group) stats.

I'm going to try to illustrate what I mean. In the next message.  But please try and figure out how we could add the things above and make it more customizable.

8  Santharian Game Projects / General Game Discussions & Newbie Area / good idea on: 26 October 2002, 15:40:00
Talking about it in the forums would probably be a good idea.  The top ads are running in the beta 8.  Until it goes live there probably won't be.  The top ads were causing popups a while back.  I think we removed the advertiser responsible.

only about 9 more days until round 8 starts.  Woo!!!!  I can't wait.

that portrait is awesome.  A very good job.  Quellion has some talent that's for sure.

Please msn me wilen if you read this.  nate66873@hotmail.com icq 20748554.  I think I would enjoy talking to you a bit, discussing why I have made certain decisions with the program structure, where we are going with it.  Why c#.  That sort of thing.

12  Santharian Game Projects / General Game Discussions & Newbie Area / on a mac on: 17 July 2002, 09:36:00
At this time I don't think it will work on the mac.  the .net framework has too many internal workings from windows that it relies upon for an emulator to work for it.

I believe a third party is working on a .net framework for linux so you have hope in the future.  But for now it's pc only.

13  Santharian Game Projects / General Game Discussions & Newbie Area / About the 98/ME bug on: 16 July 2002, 02:36:00
this appears to be a microsoft .net issue.  In fact they have lots of 98/me issues.  I was a beta tester for the .net framework and c# (which was released feb 2002).  Unfortunatley the beta only ran on win2k and xp so it wasn't tested on 98 and me.  Microsoft is working hard and finding and fixing .net framework issues.  Make sure to visit windowsupdate.microsoft.com to get the latest updates for your computer.

14  Santharian Game Projects / General Game Discussions & Newbie Area / Re: commands on: 21 September 2002, 11:56:00
Right now in the heroes of sorren mud we have a help system that uses the keyword "help" to list out help topics.  Then you look under the topics to find more specific commands.

We are going to be changing this soon so that the help is context sensitive.  Like telling you what you can do "here" not everywhere in the game.  In addition to that, the help will be part of the command objects themselves, so every object that is a command will have help text with it.

If I were to add a new command today, that help topic is added the same second.

Unfortunately I don't know of other muds that have a similar system already built.  I would be happy to show you around in our mud some time.  my msn is nate66873@hotmail.com and icq is 20748554

15  Santharian Game Projects / General Game Discussions & Newbie Area / our mud on: 25 August 2002, 12:46:00
I would be more then happy to show you the basics of our mud.  How to move around, follow in a group, talk to one another, and use special commands to relate to others called socials.

My msn is nate66873@hotmail.com, icq is 20748554, email is nate@sorren.com.  Feel free to contact me and I'll show you some stuff.  Since ours is currently being built you will be able to learn new commands as new commands are being added and even give your imput on what they should be.
