16  Santharian World Development / Places and Map Design / Re: Fanghenge (Manthria) Comments Welcome! on: 15 December 2009, 14:50:38
This looks great!  What you have so far looks very much in the spirit of what I'd imagined (although that is by no means necessary, as long as it fits with the site).  My editors' fingers itching to Uri it though... hehe  ;)

I rather like the catacombs idea, and rumours of a cult are always fun. pet   However, I think if you do want to have a cult, try to use one we already have on site.  There are a few you could blame it on (not to mention those Greylers!  This would be just the spot for them - avoided by locals.  Not to over-self-promote  nerd).

Having said all that, nice, small places entries are great for the site - you don't always want to have twelve pages to read!  speechless

I'll try to keep an eye on this, Azhira - I have a little more time over the summer, as fencing is in recess - but feel free to get hold of me if you need anything.  I'm often in #santharia or #channel, and my contact details are on my team page   pet

That's probably a good call, Drasil.  If you can explain in the entry why you won't find many Wardens there, that might be a good way to go  :)

. . . members of the town are primarily Avennorian and Serphelorian humans. . . often accompanied by a horse and pulled log-bed, these men travel miles through . . .

If there are Serphelorians, there will be women in those groups, too.  You could get quite an interesting culture-mix going on here actually - you have an opportunity with this town to define how Avennorian and Serphelorian cultures mix, and in what ways they stay seperate, when they live together.  You might choose to do it in a certain way, and say that it only applies to this town, but you may also choose to think up a way in which it would be likely to work in many of the towns along the old Av/Serph kingdoms' borders.

If it's across the river from Chrondra, and near enough to a place called Stormwarden Ridge, you might find a significant proportion of Serphelorians living there (their 'nickname' being Wardens), and Chrondra being an originally half-Serph, half Av place. read pet

They might also have a good new business in ferrying folks across the river.

Okay, just thought I'd post here so we're all clear.  I'm not a fan of what is being done in this entry.

As an experienced developer and commentor, I have tried to offer ideas of how this entry could be made to fit better into the world.  I have felt my comments have been either ignored by Nsiki or their advice selectively attended to, or minimised.  I have seen the same thing happen to others time and again.

So, I stopped commenting on this entry entirely.  As a direct consequence of this entry, I stopped coming to the board because I knew there was only more of this same uphill battle to face.  Perhaps this was bad of me, but I couldn't think what else to do, and so just started avoiding the problem.  But now I am here, and this is what I have to say:

I do not approve of what is being done in this entry with the people and areas upon which I am called an expert.  I do not approve of the sweeping, uninclusive style of development in this entry.  I also find the ideas here poorly integrated into substance and the spirit of the compendium.  This would be a fixable error had the writer been more able to listen and integrate comments, or even had the entry been on a smaller area, or an area not the most central to our world.

For what it is worth, as a moderator of this forum, I withold my approval for this entry until further notice.

Sincerely,

Grunok.

That is very kind of you, Talia, but I am doing such a poor job of places moderation at the moment, I think it would be most unwise!  As you have noted, I am always pretty busy.  I am pleased you think these will be useful though  :)
23  Santharian World Development / History of Caelereth / Mid-Santharia kingdoms timeline in picutres on: 06 March 2009, 12:56:56
I was looking over my history of the Serphelorians trying to figure out what needs to be done there, when I realised I should probably link these maps I made to this forum.  By posting these, I hope to help other developers, as well as to fire off my imagination for a new run at Chrondra!  Perhaps this could be made a sticky, as a resource?

If you download these maps, you can flick through them and see how the area of the Serphelorian kingdom changes over time.

One map has the journey of the Sophronians, as written by Capher, indicated with arrows.  It also shows original split of the patriarchal Serphelorians who settle in Sophronia, and the matriarchal women who go north-east.  The bright yellow dots are towns founded by patriarchal Sophronians before the WotC; darker dots are similar, watering hole-type places found by the matriarchal nomad part of the tribe.

The other maps are coloured to indicate the extent of the 'zaek-Sophronia-jou', or Sophronian/Serphelorian lands, over the years from the time of the peace treaty with the Avennorians, in 10330 b.S., to 477 before Santhros, after the murder of Kaira the Last.  For all, purple is the settled Serphelorians; yellow is the more traditional matriarchal group which left when Talos and Eldon took over the tribe; red stripes is the Eyelians, and blue-green stripes is the Avennorians.  The small text in this post is pertinent excerpts of the history.  A caveat, though: while the Serphelorian parts are intended to be exactly representative, the Eyelian and Avennorian parts are only meant to be correct as to where, and whether, they touch the borders of the Serphlorian kingdom.  Hence making them shaded, not solidly coloured in.

1. 10330 b.S.: Settlement areas as at the time of the peace treaty between the Serphelorians and the Avennorians.

2. 8900 b.S.: New settlements after the War of the Chosen.

3. 8060 b.S.: Quesvath's Map. For the occasion of her coronation the first proper map of Serpheloria is drawn up.  Quesvath’s realm stretches from Elsreth in the north to Chrondra in the south, and from the east cost to the Rimmerins Ring.

4. Circa 5000 b.S.: The Golden Age of Serpheloria.  This is Serpheloria as big as it gets, with a united people.

5. 1,200 b.S.: Town states before Migard's Folly.  A  succession of weak leaders sets in motion a slow disintegration of the Serphelorian Kingdom.  Over this time Elsreth, as well as many other towns in the northern two-thirds of the Kingdom declare themselves to be town-states, independent from the sovereign.

6. 1,100 b.S.: After Migard's Folly - Tibor's Serpheloria and the town-states ...a fifty-year long war between the north and the south which ends only with Migard’s death and the ascension of Migard’s much more sensible younger cousin and heir, Tibor.

7. 535 b.S.: Jakat Kaira the Last.  This is the map which is on the site as 'the Ancient Kingdoms of Santharia'. In this year the last Serphelorian Jakat, Kaira, accedes to the throne.  She is a strong Jakat, and very Avennorian in her techniques.  She unites the people - some say against their will! - although she is unable to reclaim Elsreth and does not dispute the Eyelians’ claim to the Rimmerins Ring.  The map of the kingdoms is drawn five years before her death by murder, as despite her sucesses she is not at all well liked.

8. 477 b.S.: Serpheloria Perishes.  After the murder of Kaira the succession is thrown into doubt, leading to internal wars between factions.  Eyelia, with the help of Serphelorians from Elsreth persuades the northern states to join it, as well as some other western southern pieces like Brinsley; Avennoria takes over the rulership of the south by virtue of Avennorian-sympathetic male scions.  Serpheloria survives only in a few nomadic bands now confined to a much smaller area, and Islia, Klandonia and Hog, three town states near each other.  These remnants all undertake to train every person in arms as a means to stay independent and matriarchal.  Only Hog has found a way to thrive until the current time – the other two cities are now little more than villages with memories of a grand past.

Thanks, Irid!  hug  Great to have that sort of thing picked up before it goes up.  There were actually two instances.  The root word is 'kai', strong, but 'kahimar' rolls off the tongue better than 'kaihmar' so I decided to go with the former  grin.  Nothing one can't ascribe to generations of lingual shift, eh  :p

It might only be one tribe's belief, but that is such a cool idea, Altario!   Big Grin
27  Santharian World Development / Languages and Runes / Re: Serphelorian Vocabulary on: 19 January 2009, 17:53:07
Thanks, Talia!  Yes, I see the Shendar perhaps taking a little from the Serphelorians, a little from Aeruillin (didn't they get involved in a war down there?) and a whole lot from the Darian.  Perhaps you could model the Darian on Somali language, or maybe Hindi (just the way language is used, I mean)?  It will be an interesting excercise whichever way you choose to tackle it!  :D
28  Santharian World Development / Santharian Artists Workshop and Resources / Re: Messy-haired young man on: 18 January 2009, 13:48:54
Thanks guys!  I also drew Alysse's Gnarco toad, Mannix, and Pikel's Yarg character portrait - you should be able to see the resemblance in style.  I have about eight other pictures in the works including an old lady, a male Losh-Oc, and a wealthy young man.

@Art:  Perhaps we could start a resources thread for me?  That way as more of my stuff gets finished, it can at least have a place to sit if it's not immediately used.

Thanks Judy!  Thanks for the critique too, though unless it doesn't fit whatever use might be found for it, I will leave the chin as is.  It is acutally a painting based on a friend of mine, and that is about the only part of him which made it into the final iteration!  lol
30  Santharian World Development / Santharian Artists Workshop and Resources / Messy-haired young man on: 18 January 2009, 08:29:38
Hi guys,

One of the many and varied reasons I am not around as much as I used to be is my tablet mouse.  One of my more recent attempts has turned out quite well.  Anyone have a use for it?

It is more or less finished, though I am happy to tidy it up a bit, or work on a background or body for him if it is so desired (though this part took me something like 14 hours over a month, so be aware I don't work fast!)
