46  Santharian World Development / Places and Map Design / Re: Duchies of Sanguia Proposal on: 02 January 2009, 14:22:59
This could be re-looked at with the aid of the time-lapse maps I sent you, Nsiki.  One big thing which would need to change, though, is the central Duchy - it is far too big!  It holds perhaps the most dense population in all of Santharia, so it would have to be much smaller.  See Judy's Manthrian duchies for ideas on better sizes, taking in to account defensabillity, history (Thar etc tried to cross old boundaries, not keep them), and Order responsibilities (the Wings warden and the Seyelite warden would be in seperate duchies/fiefs).

A coat of arms for the whole Ring, Nsiki?  As you write in the entry, the Ring is a vast area housing two tribes with a history of conflict (not to mention the others who are more recent immgrants) and many different settlements.  As far as a coat of arms for the duchy is concerned, I would tend to think that we should consider mapping Sanguia in more detail and creating duchies and fiefs (and getting the Manthrian version up!) rather than creating one and looking back later and going 'oops'!

This is one places enrty where you can very happily skip that section, and I reccommend that you do.  :)

Hi all.  Any progress on making this official and getting it up on site?
49  Santharian World Development / Places and Map Design / Re: Shangri-la on: 30 December 2008, 05:26:44
An easy explanation for this could be a thermal underground stream.  It would only be close enough to the surface to change the temperature in your valley, which is perhaps deeper (i.e. closer to 'sea level') than most other valleys around.  Its depth plus just happening to be on top of a section of this hot underground river = your Santharian Shangri-La!

I'm imagining how cool it would be to have a little valley in the middle of your mountains which snow never touches!  The ground would always be too warm for snow to land on, so it would fall, then "magically" evaporate at say, human chest-height?  How awesome would that be?  You could even have a hot pond/lake there from the stream, if you didn't want to keep the reasons secret.

Or you could use magic, pfft.  As a Losh-Oc I am naturally suspicious of magic.  Why enchant it when you can whack it?

Thanks, Tharoc!  I have amended the part you mentioned in lime green.  As the only people who can speak it now are Serphelorian scholars (there are quite a few of these, particularly in Chrondra - ooh, that's another entry I should be able to finish!) I thought that I should confine the distinction to the written language.  The spoken language would have very similar markers to Sertharian, as only Serphelorian institutions would teach it!

Regarding your language development, you might also like to look at the Serphelorian nomenclature for some inspiration on how to explain this kind of thing (particularly the second half, dealing with titles - the rest wouldn't be so relevant).  :)  Feel free to bell-ring/email me when you get yours up!  Even if I don't post things for a while, I am always willing to come by! hug

A belated merry christmas to everyone!  I spent mine in another city with my partner's parents, but am back with a few days off work now.  I hope everyone had a lovely time, and is looking forward to a good New Year celebration!

If you wouldn't mind, it would be good if you could fix up the spelling now.  It helps those who are reading over what you have written, and makes giving a uri-check so much more possible!  In a similar vein, you might like to put spaces between your paragraphs, and bold and/or colour your headings and subheadings.  It makes it so much easier to comment, which means you get better comments!

Ok, let's get this up!  Comments?   :)

Regarding the Serphelorians, it might help you to read their more recent history .  Those Serphelorians in the Rimmerins' Ring are definitely not nomadic; in fact there are no more nomads among the Serphelorian people at all (see last line of history).

The section 'Serpheloria Perishes' at 477 b.S shows you which towns should be populated with which tribes in the area which was formerly Serpheloria.  I also have some maps I made showing this, which I have now emailed to you (I hope the email address on your profile works!) - they will make it a lot easier  to keep things consistent if you are working with the Eyelians and their borders with the Serphelorians.

As far as your writing goes, there are a few things.  In the paragraph beginning 'In the north'.  It is always better to describe what you will find and not what you won't, as otherwise people begin picturing the wrong thing!  This can be confusing.

As far as the rest, a spell-check would probably help, or else a careful checking of the Santharian words - quite a few of these are wrong, but I don't have time to do a Uri, sorry!

I will keep an eye on this!  I'm sure it will end up great.

Hey Nsiki,

Would you mind putting a progress line at the top of your first post so I can see where you are up to?  Like this sort of thing:

Just finished the xxx section.  Still have the yyy section and zzz sections to go.
Any help on finding an aaa for the bbb would be useful!

I am hoping to get to look at this, but some context would be great, as I am lacking in time and keep coming back to see different things done  :)

@Nsiki: You can find the original brief for the picture here: http://www.santharia.com/dev/index.php/topic,12301.0.html.  The town behind her is Brinsley, which is actually very far south of the Rimmerins' Ring!  The river is the Thaehelvil, but looking across just above the Thaehelvil delta; Chylikis is just over those hills.  As you can see on the map, it does get very wide indeed there!

@ Quellion: This is looking great!  Definitely on the right track with the buildings.  There should probably be groups which look nice, other groups which look like they are half-finished like the ones you have altered here, and then some which look old and rough: water-stained or just very dirty.

Her hair also looks fantastic!  Thank you for all your hard work.  Her face is much better feature-wise, and I see the tattoos are coming along nicely.  I'm sure Tharoc is looking forward to taking a crop for his entry.  One thing with regard to her face though.  Here is what I wrote in the entry about their appearance:
Quote
Strong jaws and noses are typical, as are high foreheads, heavy brows and large eyes. This combination of features has turned out some exceptionally handsome women over the millennia, but there are many who other tribes think too heavy of feature to be called beautiful.
And about their personalities:
Quote
The Serphelorians are generally an approachable, open and carefree people with a simple but bountiful sense of humour. The women often seem forceful and arrogant to people of other tribes on first meeting, but those who live with them for any length of time will find them to be honest, jovial, loyal people who are proud of their strength and traditions. Men of the Serphelorian tribe are well known for their warm openness and generosity.
So to me, it feels like she seems a little cold.  To fix this, I would suggest making her eyebrows a little thicker and less arched, taking the crease out from between her eyebrows, and have her gaze fix on the viewer.  At the moment the smile looks good, but her eyebrows somehow look angry, to me.

That's fine, Tharoc; just mail/PM me as soon as you know what you want to ask!   :)

Haha this is a fantastic idea!  I will have to see if I can pry myself away from my work/sleep/bus/work to enter!
59  Santharian World Development / Santharian Artists Workshop and Resources / Re: Quellion's Serphelorian Warrior Woman ("Wombat"?) on: 15 December 2008, 18:03:29
Hehe Judy, I PMed him - see above!  I talked to him on the IRC way back when he first started on the tattoos idea.  In the PM I gave him full leave to PM or email as he requires, should he need anything not in the entries I have pointed him to.

As to holidays (from the Greylers thread), I'm afraid not!  However things have begun to quieten down now after the election (I am a little bit involved in politics here) so I am getting some time to make posts.  Having people poking at me, and using the 'notify me of replies' button helps too!

It is good to be around again, and I hope to always be able to keep a finger in.

Welcome to Santharia!  If you would like to contribute to the Dream, please read through all the 'I'm New!' information.  As it says there, once you have done that you should make your first post in the Joining Requests Forum of the Development Board. Write a little introduction about yourself and your interests, so that we get to know you a little. Please include your name in the Forum post title, then provide your areas of interest in Caelereth, and any special abilities you have. If all works well we'll then all be able to welcome you officially as a new "Apprentice to the Dream"!
