THE MYSTRAN

A creature of twisted shadow –a wraith if you will – of unlimited proportions, twisting and changing until the end of eternity...

Appearance

Darker than the deep depths of the northern darkness of Iva’s Dream, these wraiths are the result of being torn from their home world into the world of Caelereth, twisting them until they were no more than tightly woven darkness bound in a body reminiscent of pitch black double helix-like cords. Though rarely seen, most of the lucky (?) few who have are in no shape to tell about it, and even the Gatherers of the R’unorian Guild of Librarians have only meager information on them, save that apparently, the black fibers that makes its ethereal body are quite tasty if treated with the right kinds of magic and cooked a certain way. Though, this claim is of questionable factualness as the man who told them this information soon returned from being lost in the forests for three years during which he went mad, but still returned wonderfully healthy and well-fed.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

According the records in libraries of R’unor and Ximax, the Mystran feeds off of one’s fear. Apparently the only way to defend yourself from their dark tendrils of thought is to not believe in them. If you do not believe in them, then you do not believe they exist. If they do not exist then they cannot hurt you,  and if they cannot hurt you, then you cannot fear them. And if you cannot fear them, then they cannot hurt you, and will leave you alone. This raises several interesting questions about what the Mystran really are. One theory, presented by the Magi of Ximax, states that the Mystran are not really a creature, but rather a spiritual being from another realm that takes, or twists into if you will, the shape of what the person fears the most, having little natural, physical manifestation of their own. This is not substantiated by any evidence, however.

Another power that this creature has is to inhabit and posses the bodies of others. This is accomplished once fear has broken a pathway into the flesh and mind of its victim. Once there, it sits and rots the person from the inside out, eventually the person disappears, though reports of shadows leaving a confirmed Mystran victim’s last known location are not uncommon, as well as reports of wraiths in the area afterwords, leading some peasants to assume that the Mystran convert their victims into Wraiths.

People can be rescued from this tormet by a skilled healer, who can magically tear the beast from their mind and flesh, causing great pain and discomfort to the victim. This is also dangerous for the healer as well, because once torn from the victim, the Mystran is hungry for a new body, and might immediately turn back into the former victim’s worst fear and possess it again, or it might twist itself into the shape of the healer’s fears. As such, only healers who don’t believe in Mystran are recommended to perform the separation, though this is tough, because how can one separate something that they do not believe exists, and thus, doesn’t exist to them…

TERRITORY

The Mystran can be found usually on old battlefields, vast forests, and dark dungeons, sometimes in their own twisted forms and other times in possessed creatures, sentient or otherwise. Other than these common places, Mystran can be found just about anywhere, but are most common locations in which these battlefields and forests reside would be in the North Savonian continent. Along with orcs, dragons, and trolls who also call this area home, they are the reason why the free peoples have not settled in these areas.

HABITAT/BEHAVIOR

Inhabiting people’s bodies, these Mystran can be categorized as parasites, and perhaps, viruses, as they use a host till it cannot be used any longer, replicate itself (creating a wraith) and then move on to another host. These creatures of black sinew are quite intelligent, and it has not been uncommon to find them possessing many orcs, often even controlling large armies of orcs from different regions!

DIET

The Mystran don’t eat in the common terms of the world, but they do use people’s fear to strengthen themselves, and might possibly even absorb the intelligence of those that they possess, which would explain why they are so intelligent and knowledgeable.

MATING/REPRODUCTION

The Mystran do not mate; at least not to the knowledge of their researchers. There are two theories however, on how the Mystran propagate. The first is hard to believe, but it is that a powerful elven magic-user is constantly bringing more into the world from their lost realm. The other is far more believable and is universally accepted as an explanation for not only Mystran, but the creation of wraiths: the people and creatures they inhabit are ‘rotted out’ and their shadows turn into wraiths, the cousin of the Mystran.

RESEARCH

The Mystran have been a topic of confusion, awe, and curiosity among the researchers of the world. The  Only small available  articles can be found in the libraries of Ximax and R’unor. But what has been theorized about these creatures is that they are not in fact, creatures, but rather magic apparitions of spirts  of darkness. But what they have all agreed upon is that these creatures are not in fact, of this realm, but rather are torn from another realm by a powerful magi, probably an elf of some sort.

MYTH

...(To be continued)

Hello everyone!

My name is Brad and I am 16 years old. My experience isn't huge, but I have been interested in writing since I was a little kid. Mostly fan fiction of some sort, especially works in the STAR WARS franchise. But I had always wanted to write a fantasy novel, but could never figure out where to start. So it went to the back of my mind and I went joyfully back to writing epic adventures of regal Jedis and rough nerf-herders. Then in Middle School I read The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien and Eragon by Christopher Paolini and decided to set my hand at it, and started doing my true love (next to actually writing the story): World Building.

I drew maps and wrote small works and backstory, but eventually I got caught up in other stuff, but it was always in the back of my mind. I expanded my love of fantasy by reading the Dungeons & Dragons and Dragon Lance novels as well as others including Tolkien The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the The Lost Tales as well as Paolini's Eldest , and have recently started slowly writing things for my world. While researching what other people had created to go in the fantasy world and how they viewed the Elves and Dwarfs and the mighty dragons, I stumbled upon this site, and I was amazed by how well-written and thought out it was compared to what I had been working on. I was envious.

That was a year ago, and i have returned to the site many times to read the entries and they always got my mind turning about fantasy worldbuilding. So, to make a short story long, I decided to join and here I am. I would be honored to be able to add to this great Dream.
