That's brilliant Gaffin, fits much better.  The appearance is also exactly how I envisioned them.  I think I remember reading something about all the gnomes origin, but I may just be dreaming.  Oh yeah, technically Coor isn't evil, just thought I'd say.

Hey, I'm glad you like it!  ;) If you can find wherever you read about their origins, it would be greatly appreciated, because I for sure haven't been able to; so I just decided to wing it and throw something out there, if you know what I mean.

And yes, while Coor isn't techinally evil, he is the god of Chaos, and that is exactly the opposite of what the gnomes love - balance!

What can I say? I was enjoying the little bit of heat that we get here on the island!  grin

Anyway, I just completed the final edits and I think everything is now finally in order. Thanks to everyone for their immense help - especially Judith!  thumbup

Hmm, I don't think Coor really suits them - I mean, I don't imagine the Black Gnomes to actually be evil, more just peculiar and different, perhaps a little dangerous to outsiders. But if they worshipped Coor, wouldn't that basically take all of our ideas on them revering reality and throw it out the window?

Perhaps they don't worship a deity, per se, but worship the senses that they experience and the stimuli that provoke those senses. So, for example, perhaps they would believe that intense, excruciating pain is one of the most pure forms of communicating and/or forming a relationship with the world. Perhaps these "senses" are what they believe to be the physical manifestation of a higher power's will on Caelereth; that with its immense power it created for them the means to see, speak and hear, feel, taste, etc. I mean, just because they believe in a higher power doesn't mean that they believe it dictates their entire lives, or even that they believe it is "sentient", if you will. Couldn't it be possible that the god in their eyes is just another form of nature, like water or the earth, that what it accomplishes isn't a direct result of it actually willing itself to act, but it is just made that way?

Additionally, if we stick to our standing that they revere creation, and love to create, then perhaps they have ceremonies for the most important form of creation; the birth of a new life. I don't know if this will offend anybody or not, but it seems like a sort of unusual but fitting ceremony for the Black Gnomes:

Mating is very ritualistic, and under normal circumstances, the whole community is present for both the act of making love and the act of the birth of that child. After all, the creation of another who can - in their own right - create would be almost considered as a miracle, no?

As for appearances, I always pictured them as more dwarf-like than the other gnomes; slightly taller, broader shoulders and generally bulkier and stronger than gnorians, but not as stout as their Black Dwarf counterparts. This would be practical build, as they are, in effect, fending for themselves in the far north, and need strong builds to survive.

Their origins.... maybe when the kingdom of F'v'cl'r was destroyed, a large group of gnomes (the majority) set out with a human tribe that was heading south, and then some decided to settle in the Calmarios forest, becoming the Gremm, and the rest settle to the south and east of the forest, around where Gnorath lies?

As for the Black Gnomes, perhaps they were the minority, a group of gnomes that believed that they could further improve their craft by learning more of the arts of dwarves, so they set out with what would become the Black Dwarves, and lived with them for some years until finally seperating and arriving near where we plan to place them now?

The school year is finished, and after some recent computer trouble I'm ready to start collaborating.  ;)

Not yet, I've been busy with exams; they're over Monday. Edits will be finished shortly.  ;)

Welcome! I too had taken a long absence and I have begun my exams this week. What a pain in the butt.  buck

Judy, the monkey is only mentioned in a question I was asking of the readers. You were probably reading Decipher's Uri, so it wasn't coloured blue in that one. But hey, I could have missed it.  huh

Thanks a bunch for the Uri, Decipher - that was very, very fast indeed! I've made the one change in wording that you mentioned and other than that everything has remained the same.

EDIT: Oh, and a big thanks to Judy and Miraran for helping me with the respiration system!

Those words look awesome! Great job, guys! Perhaps I'll try my hand with that generator.

So Mina, have you finished editing the phonemes? I mean, are they basically sufficient for what we're trying to accomplish so that we can begin developing grammar, syntax and such?

Everybody's waiting on me for the most part, Mannix - I had a short hard copy of my ideas for the tribe but I misplaced it - most of the ideas would be irrelevant now anyway. So, once I get time after my exams are over I can post my ideas. Meanwhile, you and Azhira could exchange ideas.

It's ok, I never knew you were in the process of developing Gnorath. I'm sure more opportunities will present themselves.  ;)

Hiya Azhira.
Hoipe the gnomes are going well.  Don't hesitate to ask if you want anything explained about my suggestions.  Anyways, on to why I'm here.  I have mentioned in my Gnorath entry the they sent an expedition to the black gnomes.  Is that okay?  I'll remove it if you don't like it.  Good luck with your developing.

Mannix

You're doing Gnorath?

My list of significant gnomish entries to do grows thin...

Wow, that's a lot of progress stemming from my sad attempt at a phoneme list. I'm glad to see someone has expanded with it!  grin

I've still been here all along and I've made a few odd posts, although I have been busy with schoolwork; exams begin next week, which is also a big reason for why I haven't been able to contribute. This is not to say I haven't had any leisure time at all, but I haven't had the motivation to begin any more projects. Hopefully once my exams finish my motivation will return and I can aid everyone with what I have committed myself to.

EDIT: Give me a little time and I will edit the phoneme list to include the changes you two have discussed.

Don't forget to include the Yah'nork in the Fauna section once it's approved!  thumbup

I've integrated Judy's wonderful respiration system - thanks Judy! So, this is ready for more comments.
