1  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Bestiary / The White Warg ( ready for comments ) on: 14 February 2006, 06:18:00
A mysterious and rare creature that is said to roam the peaks of the Tandala Highlands, preying on just about anything that will cross it's path.

The beast's prey, which are normally greatly mangled and mutilated, are normally the only sign the white warg (or the ???'Morgur as the orcs prefer to call it) has been around, as the predator attacks with such stealth and cunning, sometimes stalking it's prey for a days, or even weeks.

Those who claim to have seen a white warg and survived say that the beast is covered in thick, shaggy fur. Most agree that fur is pure white but some claim to have seen great pale grey streaks in the warg's fur. Although exaggaration is quite common among white warg tales the many sages that have been studying the white wargs believe that the white warg is 1 3/4 of a ped in height and 2 1/4 peds in length. This is significantly bigger than the black wargs of the Prominent Mountains. Judging by their size most sages think that white warg would weigh about 2 to 3 pygges.

The white wargs also bear great, meat-shredding fangs which vary from 4 to 6 nailsbreaths long, depending on who's telling the story. The white wargs are also rumoured to gaze through startling yellow eyes with blood red pupils, but this is just a rumour, nobody claims to have seen a white warg in perfect daylight and get close enough to study it's eyes.

One of the most distinguishing features of the white warg, as with any warg, is it's snout. It seems completely out of proportion with it's small face. But with all those flesh-tearing teeth in there it's going to have to be abnormally large.

Special Abilities

The white warg is a truly remarkable beast. Besides it's talent for killing anything that could partially satisfy it's appetite it has alot of other unique features, such as it's huge shaggy coat.

Not only does it's thick coat allow it to roam easily in unimaginable cold but it also camoflauges it when it's stalking a meal.  Some researchers though think that the thick fur is a disadvantage as it allows parasites to hide and feed on the warg, even though there probably aren't many parasites on the peaks of snowy mountains.

It is also thought, like it's black warg cousins, that white warg has a finely tuned sense of smell, so powerful that it is able to distinguish the scent of two different sheep from great distances. Due to their natural proffeciency with hunting it is also assumed that the white warg has a sense of sight so much more advanced then that of man or elf, some even think that the white warg can see events happening slower than they actually are.

The only reported sightings of white wargs have been on the Tandala Highlands but some members of the compendium think that a variation of the white warg might inhabit the contienent of Cyhalloi.

White wargs are thought to be very solitairy. The only sightings recorded have stated one lone warg, never two. If this is the case the wargs wouldn't have to function usefully all the time like they do in the case of the black warg packs (for they fear being abandoned) and would be, literally, lone wolves. This does however raise a problem, if the white wargs held no contact with other members of their specie how would they mate?

However it is perfectly plausiable that the white wargs just hunt alone. They might just have a different system of authority then the regular wargs but function in the same community. They could even just prefer to be alone when hunting and do not stray out of their shelters in groups.

One thing is certain though, the habits of the white warg a  mystery.

The white wargs are suspected to have large appetites. They are known to prey upon Tandalan Sheep and possibly the occasional Ashmarian wolf (white wargs aren't the most sociable of creatures by any means) but what makes up the rest of their diet is unknown.

A gnome, Gronin Mali, who wasn't the smartest of gnomes but was abnormally goodlooking, suggested that white wargs were omnivourous and also ate redberry bushes, and even the bark of trees. He even wrote a book on the topic. His theory though is extremely implausiable.

White wargs roam the peaks, redberry bushes and trees do not grow on the peaks, and it seems along way to go for light snack. Any serious researcher disregards his writings as the ramblings of a fool.

Nobody has ever seen white wargs mate so it is assumed that they have the same mating practices as the black wargs.

Right now I don't have time to attend to this topic and the white warg so I'll continue it later.

Why is it on the places forum under Yamalquain it says 'No development intended on this continent at the moment'. Why not develop a whole continent yet? Even the slightest bit?

Yeah marvin, your point about game hunters is noted. And yes Twen, just because it's a predator doesn't mean it has to look like an insane killing machine, but that idea does appeal to me more:evil .

Hmmm...Interaction with other predators.....smaller predators...meal-sized predators:biggrin ...I wonder what could happen:devilish

I wanted to know whether or no I could make a White Warg. I thought that it could stalk the peaks of the Tandala Highlands, preying on animals like the Tandalan Sheep.

I thought it would have a very shaggy coat that is pure white with grey streaks. It would also have the common hardcore predator features ( like the great fangs, the startling yellow eyes ect.). I also thought that one of it's uses could be it's coat, like a trophy for game hunters ( santharia has game hunters right?).
