31  Organization and General Discussions / Non-Santharian Stuff: Life, the Universe & Everything / There and Back Again on: 12 March 2008, 00:50:23
Once upon a time, there was a wandering half-elf who tried to find her destiny. While she's barely a few steps into it, she keeps looking back. So there and back again.

Busy busy busy... working life is time consuming.

So Artimidor and fellow friends, how goes the strange and fantastic world for you?

I got my first short children's story published in a small and nearly insignificant publication (and Dala can affirm that) so that's a small accomplishment since the writings in Santharia. It's just the beginning and I hope there will be more to come.  cool

This board feels familiar yet strangely distant... I feel like I don't know many people now so to all those whom I've never met, a big hello from Asia.  grin

Now where's that Dala. I met her for lunch yesterday and we both feel quite embarrassed about our disappearance and lack of story continuity. Yo Dala!!! You there?   evil

I have to agree with Art that this is quite a refreshing piece... Gebl the rebel Haha... so how did you come up with name? It has a nice ring to it. I love the way you gave such a vivid description.   :)
33  Organization and General Discussions / Non-Santharian Stuff: Life, the Universe & Everything / Re: Elen's Returned on: 25 March 2007, 23:08:40
The story behind the song goes as follows.

Elen was sitting quietly behind her desk in the grand old library, a half-written story in her hand. She started scribbling, thankful for the privacy of her corner, as wasting parchment space that way was surely frowned upon.

As the waning light of Injéra coming through the window started to form longer and longer shadows, Elen rose from her seat and walked silently across the hallway and back to her room. Taking her cloak and some belongings, she left without word or reason, not to be seen again for the next few months.

Elen had no idea what made her leave. Maybe it was the monotony of the day to day routine, the constant living in a dream, trapped in the world of imagination that caused her to yearn for a real life - the breeze and the excitement of feeling throngs of people in a crowded city square. Maybe she wanted to do something different for a while, search for love perhaps. Whatever it is, she left quite unexpectedly.

No one knows what happened to Elen those past few months, a few murmurs and guesses but all that died down until Elen unexpectedly turned up again. She did have quite an adventure but the details she has chosen to keep. All she would say is that she is back and quite happy to be so, on top of the apology for disappearing so suddenly. She did add, sometime later, that she did find love, or rather some semblance of it and that was that.

*ouch*... bring pinned down vs being banned *ponders for a moment* - glad to see this place is still warm. Was given the impression from Dala that there was unrest and trouble brewing.

Note: Computer not fixed but getting someone to fix it since I have no idea how to get it fixed.

Oh yah... the stories. I still have a map pinned to my door and the story plans in a notebook on my table before. They haven't been completely laid to rest... now I just need to continue where I left that mysterious boatman in the mist.

The first thing I did when I entered was to check whether I have been removed... disowned as an apprentice. I think I would have been depressed but wa-la... still there.  grin

So yes... big apology for disappearing, computer had a virus attack and never recovered and I wasn't motivated to repair it because I use the computer at work all the time there was no incentive to continue staring at the screen at home and if I had my computer fixed, I know I will end up bringing work home. But then lately, I keep feeling like I lost a lot of the things I used to enjoy doing so I am starting to try and write again (not for work but for myself and in the process Santharia) as well as continue some of my other hobbies.  ;)

Hopefully better late back than never.

I am currently still working at the library - get my occasional Santharian updates from Dala when I see her. I actually have been writing mostly book reviews but I also tell stories to children... it can be quite a heart-warming job when it doesn't get too hectic. I do not shelve books which is what most people think I do. I plan programmes for children and I take care of the children's collection in the library that I am stationed at. I also answer 101 questions from children of the nature "why is the sky blue" and go to schools to encourage them to use the library more. I work pretty much 6 to 7 days a week on shift which doesn't give me much time for much else. But the irony is that a lot other people in Singapore work much more than I do which will explain to you why our happiness index is so low.  :(

That's pretty much most of the updates...

And to Talia... Your Christmas present is still with me! I am terrible... I will post it soon. Promise. I specially ordered it too so it's a really nice something.   undecided

Hello Hello!

I'm so so sorry to have seen this post so late - I confess I only saw it when Dala sent a mail to my office account to tell me to check. Thank you so very much for remembering even though I haven't been around that much. I feel very bad about disappearing - I think I haven't and I am VERY WELL AWARE of the things that I promised to deliver but the problem with things that have indefinite deadlines and those that do is that the former always gets neglected.

In short, I've been busy but despite being busy, I have been very happy so that's a good thing. I love my job but the setback is that because I write for work, it hardly gives me incentive to write more at home. Where the birthday is concerned, no special celebration here. I just had a simple dinner with family and another 2 with friends.

Perhaps the best gift I got is that the person who is closest to my heart finally decided to do something about it. I can safely say that compared to the past 3 years, this is the best by far.  ;)

Hmmmm Art I'm just wondering... if someone comes to visit every half a year, you would have to play tour guide everytime and I'm sure that in no time, you'll know all the history of Vienna by heart. Vienna tourism should give you a cut from some of the takings they get from the people you bring in.  cool
38  Organization and General Discussions / Non-Santharian Stuff: Life, the Universe & Everything / Re: Who is still in school? on: 21 October 2006, 16:24:31
Ah yes... that certainly crossed my mind. I thought about it for a while too, wondering if perhaps it was all a bluff, that and the fact that alot of ranking factors are really quite subjective and there is a strong focus on research - therefore, if the university actually produces alot of papers and publications etc, then it is more likely to be higher up the scale. It doesn't say very much about teaching though and someone mentioned to me that classes are better in European universities while the research culture is stronger in the U.S.

Sigh... And I really wonder where all the Asian universities went... It's quite depressing really to think that recognised academia is so strongly occidental.
39  Organization and General Discussions / Non-Santharian Stuff: Life, the Universe & Everything / Re: Who is still in school? on: 20 October 2006, 12:01:03
But you know... I think some of the best higher education is offered in the U.S. If you look at the ranking of universities worldwide, most of the top 30 come from the U.S. I know where post grad degrees are concerned, quite a number of U.S. universities are top picks because of the strong academic and research culture. Europe has alot of good universities but where research and breaking new ground is concerned, the U.S. is still ahead.    shocked

If I do my post-grad, it will definitely be in U.S. or in Canada.

cool heya, thought I would drop by to say hi. Well, just the other day, I had some students think I was a fellow student who was working part-time until they found out that it was my permanent job.

That said, working with children keeps me young at heart  grin but it also means that days like Children's Day, school holidays and Christmas are forever burnt for me. Since I'm at it I might as well pick on the wonderful brain juices of the people here - any good ideas how to celebrate Halloween with a bunch of kids in an enclosed space (bearing in mind that extremes are no-no)... I've been thinking about it for a bit and I haven't got a brilliant idea yet.

I can just imagine Dala shaking her head at me. Did she post the photos of our dinner at the moot forum?

I'm not sure if I consider trilogies "series"... There are plenty of good trilogies but series (books that are running on and on) are slightly different no?

Ah... Happy Belated Birthday.... Talia's the one that remembers birthdays, looks like her being away means we have been a little shabby with it. But so here's a "hope you HAD lots of fun!"

If you are ever stationed in Singapore, come visit - I believe the US Navy has a fleet stationed here.
