Ive developed quite a liking for the shoals and hope to develop it pretty well. I am not done or seeking one day perfection. just adding to it as I go. This vine is not at all done, I know. I'm just working on it in the little spare time I have.
Thanks again to everyone who has been helping out.
Not abandoned, just taking a break from it. But I haven't been able to pull myself away as of yet.
Smee, wonderful ideas that I will be using. Thank you so much for the input. Yes, its a very dominant vine. I was thinking along the lines of something like the kudzu vine. But your right, it does need some significant devastating weakness. The cold front is a great idea. Ill get the rewrite done when I have a moment.
On the next topic though. I think I have put all Id like into this plant at the moment before I continue onto some other creations.
I want to work a little in the beast and food lineups. To possibly detail the wine I talked about, and some of the beast that would find refuge in these vines and jungles.
Basic Overview of the Plant The Fire Blossom is a creeping vine that is native to the deeper parts of the jungles in the scattersand shoals. Fire Blossom has crimson red flower that has five petals. Petals of the Fire Blossom are known to cause minor itching irritation to skin. The vines snake their way through the jungles, creating very dense canopies and groves.
Description Fire Blossom most commonly starts growing high in the canopy of the jungle, digging its roots into the sides of other trees and feeding off of them. The vines stem can be between two nailsbreaths and a half palmspan thick, and it has large waxy leaves about a palmspan long and half palmspan wide that are shaped like a heart and spaced out roughly a fore apart from each other along the stem. Fire Blossom vine grows very rapidly up to a half fores length a day. It will circle its way around a tree until it has reached the highest point, before it attempts to attach itself to nearby trees to keep growing. The growth of the vine will continue until it has nothing else to grab onto, at which point it will reach for light and dangle its way down to the ground. Eventually, the vines form thick webs across the canopy of the jungle, and in some thicker areas can block out the sky completely. This creates small groves where very little light penetrates, and few other plants can flourish. These groves often work as nest for local fauna on the floor of the forest and mixed within the tangle of vines. However, the Fire Blossom vine can strangle the tree that supports it to death, and when one tree attached to Fire Blossom falls, it brings down many others with it. The rare flower has five petals, the four outer grow approximately a half palmspan in length and stay only two nailsbreadths wide. The upper middle petal is darker, always enlarged, and curved inward on itself. The flower blooms every season in a deep crimson to Aeruillin red, but these vines only produce three or four flowers a piece.
Territory The Fire Blossom has not been found outside of the Scattersand Shoals, and is predominately found only in the thicker jungles on Aiden. However, it has also been found (just not as abundant) on the islands of Rufi, and Triam. This plant flourishes in the tropical environment it is native too, feeding off of the healthy growth of other plants. In areas where Fire Blossom is thick, it stays mostly in the top layers of the canopy, forming nearly solid ceilings in the jungle.
Usages The petals of the Fire Blossom cause irritation to the skin, in the form of a minor itching sensation. Prolonged exposure can result in rashes, and even blistering. When the petal is ground, it produces a light red oil that has the same, but more intensified, effects as touching the petal itself. Fire Blossom oil has can be used as a non-lethal poison, that causes severe pain when ingested or forced inside the body. The locals of the scattersand shoals use the oil to mix with wax and create a coat for weapons and darts that causes wounds inflicted to burn and itch.
The seeds of the Fire Blossom have a very hard, wood textured exterior, but when cracked open contain a spongy yellow nut that is sweet on the tongue. Unlike the petal, the seed and nut do not contain any irritable substance. The local inhabitants and animals use the nuts as a source of food. On the Island of Aiden the ‘Frogg’s Wish Tavern’ in Queens Harbour produces a fine wine from these nuts that they call ‘Baveras’ Blessing’. Because of the rarity of the nuts however, it is not a big export and does not travel far from the Scattersand Shoals.
Reproduction The environment and other plants around it are so fertile, that a fallen leaf or broken vine will start to grow on its own and continue its life, forming a new plant entirely. Though the Fire Blossom can flourish in the sandy soil of the scattersand shoals, because of its fast growing nature, it will more commonly attempt to dig its roots into the bark of other trees and plants that surround it. However, when the flower of the Fire Blossom blooms, it drops a single crimson red seed that is no more than a nailsbredth in thickness out of its middle petal. This seed can grow in sand, but more often is eaten by various animals and redeposited higher in the canopy to began its life anew.
During the late autumn when the weather becomes slightly cooler in the Scattersand Shoals the Fire Blossom dies out and drops its last seeds. The vines become dry and wither. In the late winter/early spring, when the weather starts to become more stable, the vine begins its journey anew to the top of the canopy where it will start building its web throughout the summer.
What area of the world would you say is most like the Caribbean jungles? I’m thinking very ‘voodoo’ right now and wanted to try my hand at some flora and fauna creations to help develop a tropical jungle region.
I’d like to carry on the idea further if at all possible. I was reading around and the The KaÝrrhem Elves, or at least there section of the world, seemed to me to be the best to incorporate my ideas of voodoo mysticism with. Any tips of where I should start with this idea?
My name is Markov Danton, leader of great armies, and all that jazz. I stumbled across this wonderful community some time ago, and have spent a lot of my time pouring through the unique developments that you have all created. I believe the time is nigh for me to partake in the glorious growth of this fantastic world. I am a long time 'roleplayer' of the White-Wolf franchise (and custom made games), and I help develop and story tell one of the East Coast's (US) largest LARPing groups. My preferred area of development would be in cultures and subcultures of places and people. I also enjoy creating legends, stories, and tales of old that are told by these cultures.
Generally, I would just love to hop on board and help develop. Hopefully my ideas will peak your interest.
