I think the otter is fine, there are times when normal animals fit the bill here as much as any of the strange and unique ones do.

I'm not going to change anything but if Arti thinks my myth on the otter is good enough for a story entry I'll let him put it up as one if and when he puts the otter entry in. I don't have the time right now to repost it nor do any changes as I'll be leaving to go back home soon and once there I won't have the net and will not be able to change anything at all...

so I'll leave it at that and see what happens next time I visit in a few months or so.

Okay as you can see I'm back... if only for a little while. I've done a total update for my otter entry *cheers himself on* :clap  and I'm hoping that I''ll be able to get some other entrys redone sometime soon.

Until then enjoy, comments questions and quotes are welcome.

I'm also wondering if I should add the myth as a seperate entry into the story section, I think I did it quite well imo.

Feels soooo good to be back even if only for a little while :)

A cousin to the Common Ferret the Otter, unlike most other species, is more at home in water than on land, only leaving water to rest, sleep or play with other Otters. Only Found in the Isles of Quios, Often hunted and considered a pest by the human inhabitants as they steal any fish from fishing industries that exist on the isles. Their pelts are soft and wanted by many inhabitants in the region therefore giving the fisherman more reason to hunt these waterbound cousins of the Common Ferret.

Description

The Otter is a palmspan tall and one ped long, being very similar to the Common Ferret. Their fur is oily to the eye, brown to black all over expect on the underside of the neck and chest where it is white. Otters paws have no claws but have large grey colored pads and Webbed Feet. A powerful tail also Sepperate the Otter from its cousins, the fur has a soft undercoat with longer guardhairs, this is often well groomed even though they spend a good amount of their time in the water. Both male and female are similar in appearance, with the male being slightly larger than the female.

Special Abilitys

The Otter has a soft oily fur of which they keep well groomed, this keeps it from becoming waterlogged and allows them to spend most of their time in the water. They are also adapt swimmers and use their long sensitive whiskers to sense objects underwater allowing them to hunt or swim around objects such as rocks. Otters also use tools to help with food and will often use rocks to open molluscs.

Territory

The only known population of Otters are found within the Isles of Quios, and are mainly found on the most southern isle of Volveran. Populations can also be found in areas of Killyshmagost but are becoming rarer due to hunting. Otters are also bred in the Quios region for fishing, and their pelts.

Behaviour

Otters live in communial groups from around five to a twenty or more otters, these groups are close knit and most time spent is playing with other Otters in their groups. Otters can also be found hunting for fish and molluscs, when one is found the Otter is often be found floating on its back, sometimes in large communial groups.Otters themselfs are also marticulous groomers and will groom themselfs and each other when ever possible. The Otters of the Quios region are also infamous for raiding fisherman of their fish, wether on land or in the sea, they can often be found in fishermans nets catching and eating any fish they find in them.

Diet

Otters feed mainly on fish and molluscs found in the Quios region, once an Otter has found food it will lie on its back and begin to eat, a common behaviour with this is to use a tool, often a stone, to crack open any molluscs that the Otter may find. Otters are also very aggressive scavengers and will often try to steal food off others in their communial groups.

Mating

Mating in Otters is totaly water bound, and happens during spring. the male will try to subdue the female by biting both the back of the neck and the nose. This biting behaviour often leads to scaring on both the neck and the face as the male is particulariouly agressive during the mating cycle. Females will often mate with more than one male, and if her pup is lost before weaning is finished she will attempt to mate again before the colder months set in. Gestation for the pup is between 3-5 months, the single pup females give birth to is dependent on the female for 3-5 months and will be totaly dependent on the mother during this time, although females may take their pups to social groups in which mothers will care for other mothers pups.

Usages

The Otter itself is hunted for its soft pelt, this pelt is used for various clothing, but is mainly used to line coats and other similar clothing. Otters are also breed for fishing purposes as they can effectivly cause schools of fish into a net allowing larger catches of fish, these Otters will also be killed and skined after an Otter has grown to a desired size as their pelts are easier to farm this way, and also due to the ease of training new fishing otters.

Myth/lore

A myth common to the Quios Regions tells of how Otters were born from their land bound and water avoiding cousins the Ferret. There are many versions of this myth but the most common is as follows.

On the northen end of the world a beutiful white Ferret named Elise gave birth to a litter of three pups two girls and a boy. The first she called Alicia, the second sky and Finaly the third Otter. She was proud of her new litter especially Otter who was much larger than a male pup, and as Otter grew it became obvious to his mother that he was to be something very special, not only was he large but he had a very strong tail. Unfortunatly for Elise Otter was a very hungry pup and she was forced to go hunting often, but Elise was smart and had dug her burrow close to the northern beaches. Many birds nested there and she was able to hunt not only the birds but their eggs of which were plentiful as it was spring and all birds were making an effort to have chicks of their own.

A month passed and soon Otter was far larger then his mother and Elise had to make her Burrow larger so that she and her pups could all live happily as there was little room. one she said to Otter "Some may come to call you a giant, but you are still my pup and I am proud of you." she would nuzzle his ear and lick it "one day when you grow up I know you will make me proud" But with that Otters sisters became jelous, and as time went by Elise spent more and more time with Otter than with her two daughters. The day finaly came when Elise would finaly teach her pups how to hunt and so she took them to the areas where the birds nested. The children were estatic, so many new smells and sights. For hours they went around curiously sniffing everything much to the dismay of the nesting birds, but eventualy they became hungry and sought their mother for food. "now that you children are satisfyed I shall show you how to hunt" she licked her pups and told them to follow her. Elise led them up a hill and once they were uptop they could clearly see the sea beyond, but when sky looked down she screamed. Below them was a cliff and the sea came all the way to the cliff unfortunatly for the pups the scream had alerted the nesting birds on the cliff below. The birds rushed to become airborne instantly the pup were frightened and running around scared, Elise tried to calm them but before she could bring them under her control Otter slipped and fell off the edge of the cliff. Elise's heart stopped as she watched her son drop, it took only a second but to her it seemed like and eternity. She rushed to the edge but the birds continued to rush up trying to escape.

Elise cried knowing the worst had happened to her pup of which she had become so proud of, soon the birds flying up into the air scattered and she was able to look down the cliff what she saw horrified her more than seeing her son fall off the edge. Otter was alive but he was hanging onto a tree which had somehow started growing from the cliff, but that was the least of his troubles as a bird had made the tree its nest and was raviously defending it. Otter was holding on for his life but he took peck after peck to his face and paws. "Hang on just a little longer Otter" his mother shouted to him "I'll come and save you" and with the skill of an experienced rock climber Elise descended the cliff, leaving Alicia and Sky at the top of whom were now too weary to approach the cliff edge. witihin seconds Elise was within jumping distance of the birds and with a scream she jumped onto the birds back, and bit hard down on the birds head. Before the bird even realised what had happened its skull was crushed and it was dead, Elise sighed and went to help her oversized son, with all her might she pulled him up onto the nest. Immediatly she began licking his wounds, and she then realised that the bird had pecked of all of Otters front claws, and that his padded feet had swollen because of this. "Otter my poor poor pup I'm sorry" Elise said as she licked a wound on his face "I should have warned you and your sisters of the birds" Otter moved closer and nuzzled his mother when the realisation came to him "mother how will I get back up the stone" The dilema hit Elise like a stone, how was she to get her poor son back up the cliff. He was injured, had no claws and was far to large to carry back up the cliff.

For and Hour Elise sat with her son licking him, as she did she remebered a small path down near the bottom of the cliff which she herself used when hunting as a pup soon after she had left her mother she knew it would be possible to take Otter down the cliff by jumping to the potruding ledges. "Otter I cannot take you back up the cliff" she calmly said to her son "but I will take you down it there is a small path we may use to go home" Elise explained calmly "you must be brave and jump down to the small rock ledges as I do it is the only way we can go from here" Otter was scared but he didn't show it, he didn't want to let his mother down he wanted to make her proud So he nuzzled her and said "I'll do as you say and follow your every word mother" Elise quickly gathered him for the first ledge, and jumped nimbly to it. "its not very far from the nest Otter I've seen you jump longer whilst playing games with your sisters now hurry it will be dark soon" Otter followed suit and jumped to the ledge as nimbly as his mother, but he wished he hadn't as pain raced up his legs as his paws touched the hard rock he screamed out in pain. Up above his sisters heard this scream, and their curiousity got the better of them. They both ventured closly to the edge of the cliff and looked down it. They could both clearly see their mother and Otter descending the cliff, turning to each other they both realised that this was a very good opportunity to rid themselfs of Otter so that they might finaly have their mother all to themselfs.

Quickly Alicia and Sky talked amongst themselfs and made a plan, they would wait till just the right moment and then push a rock over the edge in an attempt to hit Otter and knock him into the water where they knew he should drown as non of them knew how to swim. Down below Otter and his mother were making good progress, they were already half way down the cliff and Otter was preparing to make another jump to a ledge of which his mother was already on. He jumped nimbly to it and although felt the pain rushing through his paws ignored it as he knew this would soon all be over and he'd finaly be able to cuddle upto his mother back home in their burrow where she would take care of him. Elise quickly jumped down to another ledge and Otter followed, but as soon as he landed on the ledge a rock came from above and hit his mother. Elise screamed as she lost her footing and was thrown of the ledge by the rock, as she fell she looked up and saw he two daughters peering over the edge of the cliff. Elise knew that she would not survive the fall. She hit the water hard and all the air was forced from her lungs, she struggled to hold her breath but the world around her turned black, just before she lost consciousness she heard a loud splash.

Otter Screamed as he saw his mother hit the water, and he knew he had to do something. Against all his instincts and his will he jumped off the ledge he was standing on. The long drop made him rethink his actions but he knew his mother was in danger and that he had to save her, she had done the same to him only ealier and now it was his turn. He turned his body and hit the water nose first, and to his amazment found that it was not as harsh or cold as it seemed from up on the ledge. He saw his mother who was struggling to reach the surface of the water to catch a breath, with a powerful and instinctive wave of his tail he was ontop of his mother in a second, he grabbed the back of her neck in his mouth and brought her to the surface. Just as he had swam to reach his mother he now swam to get her out of the water, and as quickly as he had reached his mother he was pulling her out onto a flat rock at the foot of the cliff, Otter nuzzled and licked his mother and as he did she opened her eyes. "Otter?" The only word to escape her mouth as she slipped back into unconsciousness. "Mother" two voices shouted, Otter searched for the voices and saw his two sisters standing on what he realised was the path his mother has mentioned. With all his strength Otter picked his mother up in his mouth and carried her to the cliff path. There his sisters greeted him and helped Otter carry their mother back to their burrow.

The next day Elise Awoke, huddled close to her Otter, Alicia and Sky all sleeping soundly. Elise nuzzled Otter checking him for wounds but realised they had all vanished. Otters fur also felt softer and had changed color to brown and white under his neck. This nuzzling awoke Otter and he turned to see his mother awake and he started to groom her. "Otter what has happened to your wounds and why has your fur changed color?" Elise asked her son. "Mother I'm glad your awake" he said joyosly "when you fell of the cliff I jumped into the water to rescue you" He explained quickly "when I entered the water my wounds were healed but all the color in my fur was washed out" Otter looked at his tail "and as I struggled to save you I found I could use my tail to swim very fast" he laughed quietly so as not to wake his sisters "they were so jelous to find out that I could use it to swim" he continued to explain "when I rescued you from the water the white of your fur soaked my neck and it stayed there" Otter nuzzled the back of his mothers neck "and now you have brown on the back of your neck from where I carried you mother" Otter saw that his mother was crying and asked her why she replied "you have made me so proud not only did you save me but now you know why you were created" Otter was puzzled by this at first but then realised, he had been born to swim the seas.

The next day Otter with his mother and sisters, of whom had appologized to their mother for the cliff incident, went down to the sea to watch Otter swim. As Otter swam he saw many things and even realised he could hold his breath for long periods underwater. Months went by and Otter became more and more accustomed to swimming finding food within the water and even catching fish. Then one day Elise called Otter from the sea and when he came she told him "Otter my son you have made me the proudest ferret on any of the lands and maybe even in the seas" Otter laughed at this and Elise continued "but alas with every day that goes by you venture further and further out and I am worried that one day you will not return" She then nuzzled her son and licked his face "so I came here today to say goodbye as I know the time will soon come when you will leave me and find somewhere in the sea to call home" Otters heart dropped he knew what she was saying was true with every day that passed he ventured further and further out to sea as it called him like a mother calls her pup. On that day Otter returned with his mother back to their burrow but that night the Sea once again called him and he knew that he had to answer. So he gave his mother one last lick and silently so as not to wake her set off to swim the sea. The sea took him on many adventures and he saw many lands, and only finaly settled on a small island when he found a beautiful ferret of which like him loved to swim in the sea. Instantly they knew they were meant for each other and they happily settled on the isles now know as Quios.

(Editors note: Many variations of this story exist, and each is different in its own way, most do not have the same names with the exception of Otter who always seems to retain this commonality. Some of the storys tell of how a god watched Otter in an act of heroism jumped into the water to save his mother, and the god then went about to heal Otter and bestow upon him the ability to swim in commonality this is almost as common as the sotry above. Others tell of how he viciously kills his sisters for their attempt on his life of which failed. Many tell of how Otter's mother died in the water and was lost, Otter staying in the water to try and find his mother in the process changing to suit the water. The last few variations are meant for older readers and are therefore not as common as the bed time story shown above.)

Overview

The Stoney Ferret or Stone Ferret is mainly found in rocky or mountain regions unlike its cousins has no claws forcing it to live above ground or in caves. It gets its name from its grey coat and rock like appearance. Able to live months without taking a drink of water it is very hardy compared to its smaller relatives.

Appearance

The Stoney Ferret’s shape is similar to the Common Ferret as in they appear similar to a rat. Both the male and female are one ped long with no distinctive features between the genders. The ferret has a grey fur that covers its body except on the tail which has no fur whatsoever instead the tail, unlike the skin on the rest of the ferrets body, is a tough hide on which cracks will form on due to dead skin forming on the tail. This along with the grey colour of the tail makes it appear much like a rock, giving this ferret its name. The ferret has no claws on its feet and instead has large thick pads of which allow it to climb rocks with great ease.

Special Abilities

The Stoney Ferret is able to go long periods without a drink, although it must still eat, this is due to its ability to store water in its tail. The tails dead skin and the thick hide allow the ferret to store water safely for future use in the body. The Ferrets thick padded feet are also a noticeable feature of the ferret as they allow the ferret to grip to even the most slippery rocks and further more climb them.  Stoney Ferrets have also been seen to work together with Common Ferrets in efforts to find or capture food; this behaviour is very common and is detailed in the behaviour section.

Territory

Although found in mountainous regions the Stoney Ferret is mainly found in sea level rocky areas and prefers those that have shallow caves where it may dwell. The Stoney Ferret has also been known to live in abandoned mines and other similar places.

Behaviour

The Stoney Ferret is a solitary animal and can mainly be found foraging for food, of which its consists mainly of lifting rocks and sniffing the area around which it lives, otherwise the ferret can be found sunbathing on a rock. When threatened the ferret will rather escape using its ability to climb rocks, but if caught it will try to bite its attacker. If approached by another Stoney Ferret they will call to each other with a series of loud "Dooks" After a short time the Ferrets will then move to each other and will preform a meeting ritual which involves the ferrets sniffing and grooming each other, especially around the head and ears. Once this has been done the ferrets will go their own ways and may perform the same grooming ritual in the future if they meet again.
This ritual is thought to be done to avoid competition especially between males, it also appears to help females find suitable males before the mating season begins. The Stoney Ferret can sometimes be seen working with a common ferret in order to hunt for food, it is not uncommon to see a Stoney Ferret waiting at the entrance to a rabbit hole whilst a common ferret moves down the hole to flush out any rabbits. Once the Stoney Ferret has caught a rabbit it will share the rabbit with the common ferret in a mutual relationship. Other methods such as the common ferret climbing trees to retrieve fruit or playing bait for larger animals so the Stoney Ferret may kill it has also been seen. It is thought that relationships such as these go to prove that all ferrets realise their kinship.

Diet

This Ferrets diet mainly consists of small animals such at rats and mice, but it will also eat any fruits if they grow where the ferret lives. This diet is extended further when the Stoney Ferret works with a common ferret to procure food, in this case their diet may also include burrowing animals, birds, ped long carnivores and a variety of fruits and roots. The ferret only seems to require only a quarter of its body weight a day to survive. (please let me know if that last sentence is okay for santharia)

Mating

The mating season only lasts for 14 days during the spring season, during this time males will mark a territory with scent glands found under their eye. These scents are then picked up by the females of whom search for the males during the mating season, once a female has found a male he will mount the female, this mating will take only a few minutes and once done the female will leave the male. It will then return to her home and after Two months will give birth to a single pup, which is grey in appearance. The mother will leave the pup in a place she deems safe, this along with the pups colour make it hard for potential predators to find the pup. The pup, only half a palmspan in length at birth, will grow rapidly in the first month after it is born and will stop suckling from its mother within the first 2-3 weeks. After a month the pup will become fully grown during this time it will grow its tell tale fur and rock like tail. In the following month the mother will teach the now fully-grown pup how to forage for food, she will then force the pup away from her home and the pup will seek a rocky area where it may live.

I don't know but I think it should go something like

15  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Bestiary / Fire Ferret (Kaboom!!!!) on: 13 September 2003, 21:52:00
The Fire Ferret

The common name given to a sub species of Ferret that lives in deep caves of which are close to or have Magma. This Ferret was first discovered due to its unique droppings of which contains metals from the surround areas in its purest form. This Ferret is also noticeable due to the flame which emits from its tail. This Ferret although hard to find has been researched extensively due to its obvious uses.

Apearance

The Fire Ferret is commonly double the size of the common Ferret although it seems to vary depending on the metals found in the areas of which they inhabit, the weight also varys from area to area. Its apearance is the same except it has a black hide of which excretes small amounts of sulphur. The most notable feature of the Fire Ferret is the tail of which it gets its name, the tough hide which covers the tail excetes various liquids of which easily ignites. This fire burns very hot yet very slowly. The claws of the Fire Ferret are also noticeable since through some process yet to be discovered the metals from the area of which the Ferret lives seems to bond and reinforce the teeth and claws, allowing the Ferret to easily dig and through soft dirts to hard rocks, the process of which makes the metal bond to the claws and teeth also seems to make it resistant to extremely high heats and much tough than normal of which is another reason this Ferret has attracted so much attention.

Special abilitys

Fire Ferrets have many abilitys all of which have occured due to its harsh habitat. The Fire Ferret is able to excrete various liquids through it skin, these liquids will often harden on the skin, most of these liquids are poisenous and the most common of which is suplhur of which it builds up high amounts from drinking magma. The most common and most renouned ability this ferret has is its tail of which excetes the most flamable of all liquids the ferret consumes. The liquids are then ignited most commonly from the high heats of which the Ferrets live although it has been found that the liquids are so unstable that the will burst into flames after a certain amount of time (it is unknown how this occurs) The Fire Ferret is also able to digest metals purifying them of which the pure forms will then be excreted along with its feces although small amounts of the metals are somehow kept in its body and is then somehow changed and bonded to its teeth or claws fortifying them, the Fire Ferret also seems to make the metals it uses extremely resistant to heat and make the metal stronger that it actualy is (lead for example has been found to be stronger than steel once a Fire Ferret has digested it) although the stronger and rarer metals seem to be excreted in their feces. Fire Ferrets have also seen to explode once dead it is though that this is becuase the body can no long excrete the flamable liquids held within it causing a reaction of which is intensified to to the Fire Ferrets tough hide hardening very quickly after death. The last but most obvious is their ability to resist poisening from metals it is though that this is due to their being raised and therfore gaining a resistance to it.

Territory

Fire Ferrets can only be found deep underground near sources of magma.
Fire Ferrets also apear to be non-territorial creatues

Habitat/behavior

Fire Ferrets apear to live a very long time and therefore have been seen to form small family communals in which both males and females live alike of which will be disbanded after a single mating season. Although in areas where metals are scarce Fire Ferrets will often live alone
The Fire Ferret will spend most of its day either sleeping or tunneling for metals of which it will eat and due to little or no contact with humanoid species seem to be fearless towards them, although they are a passive creature of which will only defend itself if attack and even then will try to run. If attack a Fire Ferret will try to Urinate on its attacker if successful it will then attempt to swing its tail near the attacker attempting to ignight the urine and deter the attacker

diet

The main diet of the Fire Ferret consists on minerals in the area of which it lives the Fire Ferret will also drink Magma and has also been seen to lick sulphur off rocks near magma flows, not much else is know about the Fire Ferrets diet or digestive system due to the fact they explode after dying. It has also been noted that the Ferrets somehow have a stable amount of liquids in their diet although where the liquids come from or what they are is as of yet unknown due to the unstable nature of all excreted liquids from a Fire Ferret

Mating

Mating is very similar to the common Ferrets mating cycle except it happens once every 3 years instead of every year, this could be because of the Ferrets harsh living conditions, the mating season lasts for only 2 weeks in which females will seek out males to mate with, the females could move through many miles of tunnels or even make their own to find a male in order to help the females to find a them a male will excrete the chemicals it would normaly do so from its tail in its urine instead, the male will normaly do this in a large area the afect being that the urine would ignite and the resulting smoke will filter through the tunnels attracting females, it is yet though that males that have a higher sulphur content in their urine will attract more females, though how females are able to tell what smoke comes from what male is still a mystery.
Mating itself is very brief once the female comes in contact with a male it will get into a ready postion allowing the male to mount it, the male will stay mounted for only a few minutes before seperating. After this the female will leave the male of whom will continue to attempt to attract more females by ignighting its urine.
after the 2 weeks are over the males will return to normal, whilst female will attempt to find a running magma flow, once found she will collect large amounts of soft dirt and use it along with sulphur from the magma itself to create a nest the female will stay in and around this nest for a month before giving birth, before this though the female will take large amounts of hot magma in her jaw and deposit in the nest using the fire on her tail to keep it hot. She will then give birth to a litter of 2-4 pups of which she will place in the magma to climatise to the heat. During this time the pups are most likely to die. Those that do survive  live in and around the nest for the next 2 months growing rapidly and seemingly doulbing in size every week. During this time the mother will bring the pups more magma for them to eat as well as metals and rocks she had excavated during the finaly 2 weeks. After these 2 months are up the mother will take the pups away from the nest and teach them how to survive after another 2-4 weeks the pups will be fully grown adults and will leave the mother to live on their own. The exception of this is if the area where they live is abundant in minerals in which case they will live with the mother until the next mating season in which they will part their own ways.
