Now we're at it anyway, should there be some theories explaining why some spells backfire and/or fizzle? I already had a theory, but it won't be workable with the current spell classes, so I won't be explaining it. However, maybe anyone else has an interesting idea.

Perhaps it would be nice that it has to do something with the capability of the spell caster but although to some degree with the victim. It would be interesting when even fighters can somehow make a spell cast on them backfire...

Yeah, I had a theory about the elements clashing with eachother, because a spell manipulates one element, which may cause it's opposing element to become unstable. That might also cause a fizzle and/or backfire, if you can't control that reaction. But because there are combined spell levels, this can't work.

Oh, no, Theo, that works just fine! Here's my take.
Sit 1: Mage tries to cast a spell WAY beyond his level: fails; can't control the element/spirits that well yet.
Sit 2: Mage tries to cast spell fast.: Could fail, if so because the spell/spirits of the opposite nature weren't accounted for, they turn on the spell, kaboom.

But what when you have e.g. Chaos magic, Xarl? Chaos Magic consists of the opposites Fire and Water, so if you cast the spell at a reasonable level, they'll both be controlled naturally. Or am I did I overlook something?

What about the random factor? Like all spells can backfire because they get out of control

What is good and what is evil depends on which side of the coin you see.

If it has the opposites... Chaos magic is the opposite of the normal situation. It is controlled backfiring. However, there's always the danger of the forces arayed being too strong; and a kaboom. Also, if the forces are balanced too well, the more dangerous thing will occur. A Chaos Fizzle; peace magic. All chaotic effects instantly cease.

Oh boy... I think you were right when you first said it, Theo. The clashing elements thing just wouldn't work. The elemental energies combine to create different kind of magics. However, this could still work in a certain way.

[Wizardly] Magic, as it is, is a manipulation of the Aura. The Aura of the elements, basically. But, if someone casting a spell couldn't keep control of the peice of the Aura they were manipulating... Well, it would, quite frankly, backlash. Strike back at them. Like trying to shoot a rubberband at someone, but letting go of the wrong end and hitting yourself.

Alright, I just fully read Xarl's stuff about Chaos magic. That's not really how it works. A backfired Chaos spell wouldn't become peace magic. It would be a blast of Water and Fire energy. The energies which were combined into Chaos magic would be ripped asunder, that's what the backfiring would do, and just... explode? I dunno if that's the best word, but it wouldn't be good.

As for fizzling, I think that would be different. Just not being able to control the energies enough to even start the spell. Backfiring, you're already like almost through it, so the energies are already there. With fizzling it'd be more like... the energies are being called up and then just dissipate because you couldn't get them all the way there.
