My version
Overview: The vilerat is an aptly named creature, a putrid specimen with hygiene habits rivaling those of a diseased troll. These green-furred, disgustingly big rats are about two palmspans long and can weigh up to an Od. These parasite-ridden pests often carry diseases, and were responsible for spreading the 696 Plague in Quios.

Appearance: The vilerat is a yellow-green rat, larger then most. At two palm-spans long and weighing up to an Od, these vile creatures are the picture of disease. Their tail does not help the image. It is one of the few bald spots on the rat, a long, worm-like appendage. This wriggling limb makes up about half the vilerat’s body. Their pointed nose is constantly sniffing around for rotting meat, and their whiskers are used almost as another set of eyes, used for direction, balance, and another addition to the vilerat’s already foul appearance. This picture is completed with the addition of two incisors, extending well past the lower jaw.

Special Abilities: The prolific vilerat is not only disgusting in appearance, stench, and disease, but also in its unique method of death. Upon death, it begins to melt slowly, becoming a small mire of yellow-green goo called Vilique. Vilique is a highly acidic substance, used as a poison by the Kasumarii and a reagent for some particularly vile spells.  It melts through most surfaces and substances but will dissipate in about an hour in an open space. While this may not truley be considered an ability, it has helped the species in the past. (Add link to behaivor)
The vilerat also has the "ability" to eat just about everything it comes across. Garbage, flesh, mold, carrion, nothing is too putrid to work it's way through a vilerat.

Territory: The vilerat is found anywhere where it can find rotting flesh, garbage or any number of other putrid substances. In other words, if you don’t want to touch it, a vilerat probably does. The vilerat most likely originated in Yamalquain, but now ranges from said continents to other jungles, cities, and swamps. Nyermersys, New Santhala and major port towns also have large population of vilerats living in the sewer system, coming out at night to feast on the byproducts of a society where murder is as common as the rising moon. It is believed the vilerat came from Nybelmar or Yamalquain on ships taking fruits, beasts, or other goods to more populated areas.

Habitat/Behavior: Vilerats act much like other rats. At night, when they are most active, you will commonly find them scavenging, stealing food, fighting, and generally spreading disease. Combat is most likely a vilerats greatest strength. It as an inspiration to any warrior to see two vilerats locked in mortal combat, jumping, biting, and creating an obstacle course of vilique. They jump with deftness never seen in the human world, and bite quickly, but with great effectiveness. They fight for many reasons, be it over a mate, food, hunger, or fear. Not only does Vilique play an important role in vilerat/vilerat combat, it also plays an essential role when vilerats are fighting against larger combatants. Like a band of bandits, they will viciously attack each other, creating pools of Vilique for their opponents to navigate. This "strategy" (though it is most likly a fear-based reaction) has served them well against many an extermination team, like the one lead by Gavan Kuldyir, exterminator extraordinaire. (Gavan died in a Nyermersys Asylum, 223 a.S.) While this plan of attack may seem a bit suicidal, the sheer amount of acid often leaves more vilerats alive then would have died.
Teams like Gavan’s not only have to deal with puddles of Vilique, but also the vilerat’s exemplary swarming technique. When a plague of vilerats (the proper term for a group of the creatures) attacks a single target the target will either die from bite or scratch wounds. If they do not die immediantly from the wounds, infection will set in soon enough, swelling the area, turning it a sickly shade of green. This shade of green, shared by the color of the fur, has been named Vilien Green by a small collection of macabre artists.

Diet: Vilerat’s eat anything and everything. Though they do not appear to get any substance from it, vilerats can often be seen chewing on wood. The rare vilerat in captivity does not seems to survive long if not given a block to chew. In fact, the death is most monstrous. It appears if the teeth are not kept in practice, they grow upwards, piercing the brain.

Mating: Vilerats mate every chance they get. Unlike many other beasts, vilerats have no mating season. Mating is as common as eating, and is a disgusting site to behold, as you can well imagine.
After mating, the female gestates for about three months, after which a litter of 6-15 babies is born. The young vilerat is a hairless, blind creature which is weaned for five weeks. Immediately after weaning the rats- you guessed it- mate. These litters are smaller, only about 2-4 babies.
The vilerat lives a nest-like structure, with underground tunnels connecting to various "rooms" many used for food storage or nursing.[/color]

Myth/Lore: Besides being legendary for their grotesqueness, the vilerat is also known as one of the forms of Khalkoroth, high demon of Co’or.
Taken from the journal of Tapan Maoertin, priest of Ava.

"Today we hath encounterd a nest of creatures most vile. Large rats, paled a sickly green. They are perhaps the epitome of beastial sin. They mate and fight constantly, always spreading disease wherever they go. And this seems to be everywhere. We have found some specims in the temple. They do seem to be stealing our food, rubbish, and cadevers (!) prepared for funerals. We have sent a team of extreminators down to deal with these beasts so foul. They have only recently returned, quite deficiant in number. I have asked them of the events that transpired and it would appear Ava did not bless us this instance. Our warriors were thrashed, many missing limbs from pools of acid the treachorus creatures created from themselves, others gone completly, apparently the dinner of a pack of these creatures. In our reasearch, we have been shown a demon lord has manifested himself as a vilerat in the past. Surly he is here now?"

Researchers: Gaven Kuldyir was noted for his studies into vilerats. Granted, he was trying to extinguish them, but his findings have are heralded as some of the most in-depth studies of the creature ever preformed. It is quite possible that this man was simply the only researcher willing to spend half his life with these creatures.

Usages: Vilique is a highly acidic substance, used as a poison by the Kasumarii and a reagent for some particularly vile (and powerful) spells.  It melts through most surfaces and substances but will dissipate in about an hour in an open space. It will not melt through some specialy treated metals and cloths. It is importated to dealers through an extensive and expensive black market. Vilique is extremly expensive, availible to only the most determined (and expert) assassin.

Xarl's Version
Appearance. The Vilerat, to most appearances, is a slightly green-skinned ratlike creature. On average they are two handlengths long and one handspan wide. They are covered with green-tinged fur except for the wormlike tail, have a pointed nose, whiskers, and two very noticable incisors. Often they carry parasites.

Special Abilities. The Vilerat, besides being one of the ugliest and most prolific beasts of Caelereth, is unique in its method of death. Before its brain dies, its respiratory system does. This results in its flesh becoming highly acidic within seconds. Within one minute of respiratory shutdown, it melts into a puddle of vile yellowish goo that can melt almost anything, called vilique. It takes one hour in an open space to dissapate. Said fluid is one of the more unpleasant ingredients in several spells of Ximax.

Territory. The Vilerat is found nearly anywhere there is garbage, rotting flesh... basically, if you don't want to touch it, there are Vilerats somewhere near it. They are most numerous around the major cities of Santharia, like Santhala or Nyermersys, where they exist in vast warrens, deep within the sewers.

Habitat/Behaviour. The vilerats are only observed to have two widely known habits. When their warrens are threatened, they swarm anything that might be attacking it. As one of the survivors of one of these extermination campaigns can testify, it is an "utterly terrifying experience. Even the killed ones' stench helped them... I only could save one man... Jara-aaahl!" (Gavan Kuldyir died in the Nyermersys Asylum, 223 a.S.)

Their other habit is when outnumbered, they will tear into each other, producing puddles of vilique to attempt to even the odds. Otherwise, they act as normal scavengers, stealing food by night, breeding and sleeping by day.

Diet. It doesn't matter what stage of decay it is in, Vilerats will eat it. From the fresh victim of an assassin to a piece of month-old spittleshell, Vilerats will eat anything that we consider edible, and a great deal that we don't.

Mating. Vilerats basically breed every chance they get. Male meets female during scavenging, they'll breed. The female gestates for three months. The young are nurtured in the warrens until they are large enough to strike out on their own, generally three or four weeks.

Myth/Lore: Besides being legendary for their grotesqueness, the vilerat is also known as one of the forms of Khalkoroth, high demon of Co’or.

Researchers: Gaven Kuldyir was noted for his studies into vilerats. IZt is quite possible that this man was simply the only researcher willing to spend half his life with these creatures.

Usages: Vilique is a highly acidic substance, used as a poison by the Kasumarii (how does it get to the Kasumarii? Cyhalloi is very far away so it must be very valuable) and a reagent for some particularly vile spells (as I said above, these spells must be very high level, a new initiate into Ximax would not be able to afford something that is so valuable it is transported to so far overseas).  It melts through most surfaces and substances but will dissipate in about an hour in an open space.

It is a nice entry Nsiki but seems to lack a certain heart that few entries have. Perhaps to entertain the reader a bit more you could add an eyewitness report of these rats fighting?

The think that the Myth/lore could be expanded, perhaps there were clerics who, seeing the rats as the manifestation of the demon, attempted to exorcise it by destroying them , but failed spectacularly.

I have given you some things I think need some elaboration and explanation, but I don't see many problems with this.

Good Work!

Nsiki, if you do not change that revolting and inaccurate metaphor in the first sentence,  this Dwarvenmistress will be forced to hang you up outside her window - upside down, with a vilerat carcass tied around your neck and a sprig of parsley in each ear - for your own protection!

Dwarves - whether high or low, miners or mages, Gornegrons or Foodtenders - have very high standards of hygiene, as befits a race with enlarged nasal passages and an expanded sense of smell.   Miners wash head-to-toe before they eat (see the Een Puvtyr entry) and both daily bathing and ritual purifications are part of the Thergerim culture.

Either you have been reading far too much R.A. Salvatore and made a quick adjustment from 'gully dwarf' (looks scornfully down her nose at the mention of such debased creatures), or you haven't read up on CAELERETHIAN dwarven culture at all.

Please remove the offending comparison before your submission gets relayed via dwarvendrums to the nearest Tyr and a half-clan of furious (but clean!) Thergerim arrive on the doorstep of the Compendium looking for you.....

(A small vilerat creeps about one of the many deep and sprawling cellars of the Compendium.   It darts away with a hasty jump into the air as rumbling noises are heard from the stone beneath its balding feet.   Muffled voices mutter and swear in Thergerim.....

If an observer fluent in the dwarven tongue were present, perhaps sitting on the barrel behind which the young rat had darted, he might have heard something like this in a very gruff voice.....)

"Hutpu!   That last rock y' tossed aside landed on m' boot, lad!  Watch where y' throw the sharp stuff, eh?"

(equally deep but younger-sounding) "Oh, pardons, Voshyim/Guide!   Is your boot unharmed?"

"A scuff, na more.  M' wife makes them strong - but these were her troth-gift so y'd best not be scratchin' them up.  All this fuss for a little nothin'...."

(more sounds, rather like metal on stone, and some grunts of effort)

(gruff voice) "May that young bithol-gerrezt have rockfleas infestin' his huwiek for the next century!  If that flagstone's broken we'll all get it in the rump from the Mast'rbard....."

"Me, Voshyim?"

"Na, lad, I meant the human apprentice who thinks us hard-workin' Thergerim stink like a vilerat.   M' stockin'-hoisters are losin' their spring these days, an' I thought I might just be using a piece of his intestines instead...."

"Y' mean - y'll have his guts for...."

"For garters.  Aye."

(new voice, lighter than the first two) "Dwarf-friend Yudith did say he was very new to th' halls of the Compendium and might not know all the lore of the forefathers and foremothers yet....   perhaps we could be givin' him a second chance?   Tis but a carved word or two that can be changed, Voshyim..."

"An' a carven word is a word that's carved, and the stone won't grind down."

[This, had the listening vilerat but known it, was a dwarven proverb rather like the human "Measure twice, cut once" or "Words are like feathers; you cannot gather them back after letting them loose."   Dwarves believe in thinking before speaking - even more so before actually incising - for they do not in general 'write' their language but carve it instead - their words for permanent record...]

(One of the flagstones of the cellar begins to lift - is shoved horizontally so that it grinds across its companions - and comes to rest with a dying screech of rock on rock.    Torchlight spills out of the new opening, and then all is silent for a candledrip...)

Alerting himself to a presence, Nsiki pushes himself out of his chair. Yellow eyes searching nervously, Nsiki grasps a small sample of unbroken Silkstone, and a torch. "Stay Villy," he commands, urging the small vilerat to stay in it's cage.
Two voices conversed in Thergrim not far away. Nsiki caught bits of the ancient language, and attempted to respond in the same tounge.
"Hello, stone-friends. I am Nsikigan Sa Yourth of the Short tribe of Tall Ones. Perhaps a grievence has been caused by me to you? If so I apologise. Little knowladge of Dwarf culture I hold. May my mistakes be forgiven."
Bowing to the intruders, Nsiki offered a small gift to the dwarves. "This sample of cloth-rock is sutible?"

The Earth Guide, addressed by his title as 'Voshyim', is taken completely aback.   "C'n this courteous young Kegerthern be the same one we are wishing t'  chastise?" he mutters to the female behind him.

There is a stifled giggle in response and a quick mutter of more ThergerimTaal which Nsiki can either not hear or not translate, but he understands the next move.

The Voshyim steps forward, dark eyes glinting suspiciously still in the thicket of slicked-down beard and moustache that adorn his face, and holds out both hands, open, showing them empty.   The slim figure (slim for a dwarf, that is) on his other side comes forward further and politely accepts the cloth-rock from Nsikigan, giving a slight bow as he does so.

"Thergerim," announces the Voshyim in a stern voice, "do na stink."  He glances pointedly at the small rat in its cage behind Nsiki, but then seems to falter as he sees the researcher's calm body language and apologetic expression.  "We, er, are wishin' to point this out to all an' sundry who might be havin' the wrong impression.   From certain carvings - um, writings -  that, er, might be widely read.   An' from people who might not be knowin' better."

He has difficulty maintaining his stern tone during the last part of his reprimand, but it completely falters when he sees the gift his young assistant is holding beside him.  "Rockwool, is it?  Hah, not many of the human folk as knows the stuff...."

The female dwarf, a smile showing through her beard (she must be one of the traditional sort, Nsiki thinks), comes up to him and bows in return.   "If you will but grind away  - 'erase', is it?  -the words you knew no better, I am sure the Clan will forgive.  Our Voshyim's growl is sharper than his teeth...."

"And," puts in the Guide rather gruffly, but with a faint smile of his own, "we canna be at odds with a lad who speaks th' Tongue, though it be with a human accent..."

"Call it peace, then, Voshyim, and you, young scholar.  And we must begone," the female puts in hastily, "ere our Vornegron learns of this, aye?"

That swiftly, the three shapes vanish through the tunnel - the flagstone grates back into place - a glimmer of light round its edges for a short time as the torch moves away - and then silence.

Only the fact that Nsikigan's sample of Rockwool is gone from his cluttered desk lets him believe the entire encounter.... and, of course, the fact that his first sentence has been scratched out hastily and rewritten...

(OOC:  Nsiki, thanks!  That was fun; I don't usually get over to the RPG these days.  Appreciate your indulgence - and also thanks for changing the 'offending' phrase!  :) )
