Question on Geography
«

I'm putting this here because I don't want to spam the Places forum. Do you need special permission to make new land masses? I'm getting some ideas for an Island and I want to know if there are any particular rules for it. I read the guide and I don't think that It said anything about new land masses, just doing areas of an already established continent.
I also think it would be fun to make an island because it could have its own tribes, some of which could have been offshoots of mainland tribes. It could give some newer people (e.g. me) a chance to have a possibly more free area to dev (not saying that there isn't freedom devving elsewhere, but that there is more to keep in mind, like hat is already inn place, cultural influences, etc. Anyway, just looking for advice.

its forbidden. the geography of Santharian Dream is huge. just pick a land mass and add to the entries in the land mass. you have to do alot of reading and research though, and then you have to get permission fro the developers of that particular reason. that is why they have the entry submission process to make sure the developer of that particular area is ok with your idea.

Thanks. I didn't remember it saying that it was forbidden, but I figured it was, and it was better to check. Thank you again.

Basically it wouldn't really help the dream if everyone had his own island with his own tribes and such.

Yes, it's better for the project if people develop aspects of existing landmasses - there's enough space for creativity in that I can assure you, as long as things stay somewhat realistic and in context. See it as a challenge for your imagination

@ King of Santharia: I believe new forests and mountains are possible, but are very difficult. As they are probably large geographical features, they have a significant chance of interfering with the environment, food supply, and just general entry consistency. The first thing to do of course would be to find a space on a map of a specific continent that looks empty. This is hard and must be carefully researched, as many of the "empty" places are really deserts or large plains. After researching, if you have an area in mind, you probably want to contact experts on the continet or area you plan on using, even if it is undeveloped, because they will be able to tell you how your new feature will affect the surrounding agriculture.
Also, once you have created a new area, it requires vast amounts of entries to be wholly developed. A good example is the Drifting Woods entry. Miraran, the developer of this forest, has been working on entry after entry for this area, and has to constantly roll out new Flora and Fauna for the area. If you look at his developmental schedule, it is absolutely LOADED with "to do" entries involving his superb Drifting Woods. So although it sounds good in theory and is a fun thing to create, make sure you have a long term plan in mind for developing all the other entries involved with it.
Might not all be right, but this is probably A fairly accurate process to follow. This sounds sort've discouraging and negative I suppose, but ignore me.
If you think you have a good idea King of Santharia, run with it, but jsut make sure to take some time and plan. If you decide you want to do this, a good idea could be to save such a large project for your masterwork, which will evnetually qualify you as a Santharian Member.
Just my thoughts,

Also, the term 'new' forest is a bit off here. What i did, and what you could do, is take an existing (visible one the maps) forest/mountain range/swamp/whatever, and start working on that particular area.
It's a whole lot of work, but it can be verry nice to create something that is just like you imagined it, and work out every little detail yourselves.

a) Suggest a name change.
b) Suggest to have a look at a map and find something to do, elaborating what you can already see.

To make it clear: We don't plan to change existing maps. As many things are already described and if you put a mountain somewhere that would destroy everthing. Maps also exist in various varieties and if there isn't an extremely good reason to have something of that kind somewhere it just won't happen. Don't we have enough mountains already to describe?

Hi!
Well you could create your own mountains and make up all the various ideas and such, even if the location and overall picture of the mountian is already layed out right? Because many mountain ranges have no descriptions, and so still need lots of work.
For example, if you really want some mountains, the Zsharkanian Peaks in Nybelmar are (I believe) undeveloped. But attempting something like that is a HUGE project. You would need careful assistance by Coren, Smith in Exile, or maybe Miraran. They would need to coach you through the entire process, making sure you incorporate their future ideas for Nybelmar, building an entirely undescribed Elf-Orc halfbreed race, making references to the plants and animals, and matching the climate to that of already existing Nybelmar. These are just a few problems you would be facing. So many things, and it is really way to big a project to begin with. I don't mean to discourage you, but you might want to try something smaller. Maybe a beastie or a plant to go in those peaks? Choose what you want, but pick somethign small. This way, you can familiarize youself with the area before attempting a big project. Though I wouldn't suspect anyone would be allowed to design a mountain unless it is their masterwork or they have membership. As the introduction to the Dev Board says, start small, and go eventually big. Believe me, no matter what entry you do, it will be rewarding.
Anyway, good luck, your zest for developing unexplored places and the like could be a great thing for Caelereth if you put it to the right use.

As Dru mentioned, this kind of regional assignments do occur, even to new people, but not without a couple of other entries that show the quality of the person in question's writings. Why not start on a beast or plant that lives in mountains? that way you could later mention it in entries would you actually get the permission you seek!
