     Game Name

Remusian Awl Game

OVERVIEW:  Strange as it may seem, even in the unbearable cold and desolation of the Ice Coasts, it seems that people need a distraction from their everyday lives.  A game that was invented by the women has spread to where the men are using it as a way to gamble.  A simple game, using the tools and materials of leather workers, pits two or four people against one another in a race around a "board".  It is a simple game that is played while the women continue to work.

     History

This game started as a pastime for women who were gathered and working on leather products.  In the beginning, it was not much more than a piece of scrap leather with hole going in a circle around the outside.  Through time, the special area were added, the Tundra and the Channels, and the rules were elaborated on.  Later, men learned the game and began placing wagers.  They might place a set wager in which the winner take all, or they might agree to place a wager dependant on the number of holes lost by.  The game is a cultural favorite of most of the Ice Tribes, though it is not known much outside these parts.

     Diagram

Image

My artwork notwithstanding, the link above will give a rudimentary view of the game board and playing pieces.  The average leather board would be about 2-3 fores square.

    Equipment

The playing board is a large piece of worked leather, painted, with holes in it, usually laid out on the ground, about 2-3 fores square.  The awls are normally plain wooden leather-working awls, but some wealthier women have special awls carved out of more exotic materials as bone or ivory.  This is true of the throwing sticks, as most are wooden, but some are bone or ivory.

     Setup

A Game for two or four players.  Two players start out at each of the Open Rivers facing each other if two are playing.  If four people are playing, then the next two players start at each of the Frozen Channels.

     Rules

Each of the players throws a set of four throwing sticks at the Awl Stone in the center of the hide.  These sticks are flat on one side, and rounded on the other.  One of the sticks has a special mark on it.  For each stick that is face up, the player moves that many holes in the direction of his starting arrow, placing her awl in the corresponding hole.  If the special marked stick falls flat side up, then the player is allowed one extra throw.  No extra throws are allowed on the ensuing bonus throw.  A player who "fell into the open channel", or landed on another player's awl had to start over.  A player who landed in the Frozen Channel must lay their awl on its side, and must skip their next turn.  Those who "get lost in the Ice Fields" also lay their awl down in those areas, but do not move until their throw results in the marked stick being flat side up.  They do not get the bonus throw in this case.  The first person to pass their Open Channel or Frozen Channel wins the game.

Note: This Forum part contains discussions about Northern Sarvonia. Submissions fo entries should be posted in the appropriate Forum section, where the entry can be found on the site eventually. In this case it is the Miscellaneous section, Altario - I'll move it there!

ok, thank you.  I thought since it was a game native to the Ice Tribes it would go here.  My mistake.

Altario, I had only a quick look this morning...

"The game is a cultural favorite of most of the Ice Tribes, though it is not known much outside these parts."

I don't know, the Remusians were written of somebody else, not Curgan and so they are different than the other icetribes (maybe we should carefully adjust them a bit). The icetribe's woman are the property of the men and live in a very demanding environement, so I don't know, if they have any pasttime at all.

Then - where is tundra? Maybe in the south of the remusian territory, but I would think if you adapt it to snow and ice, take something else for the rivers (where are in this area rivers?) then it would be fr better. They could have imprted it , but I think it would be not very popular if the people don't know, what a tundra is. Or a dried out riverbed.

What about this?  Tundra I can replace with Snow Fields, as you suggested, and Rivers with Open Channels, and Dry Riverbeds with Frozen Channels.  These names might work.

As for pasttime.  I think almost every society has some sort of recreation, regardless of how hard everyday life is.  Eskimoes have their own types of games, etc, so a group of women gathered, leatherworking together, is a very plausable situation where a game such as this could have come about.  It is a game that could be played WHILE they continued to work, as they would be sitting around the board, waiting for each person to make their turn.

I don't think anything as benign as a board game would pose a cultural difference between the Remusian's and the other Ice Tribes.  I know the Remusians are different, but I think this is a case where they could be alike.

A quick question before I comment. Do you plan to mainly focus on the ice tribes. Because if you do this is a good thing, for they seem undeveloped. Anyways this looks like a very good game, if you just add some more details. I found no actual problems with the entry, and I quite like this game.(reminds me of pollyanna)

Yes, I am enthralled with the Ice Tribes.  I have PM'd Alysse asking her for permission/help with developing this area, as she is listed as the North Expert.  I am hoping that this is ok.

On an other note, this is a second comoarison to a RL game, neither of which I am familiar with.  The idea for this is an ancient north american indian game.  I remember seeing it somewhere, but no longer remember where, but when I did, I wrote it down to try to incorporate it into some writing I was doing at the time.  I think it seems interesting.

I don't find it very clear where the players start when there are 4 of them: do two players start in one dry riverbed and the other two players in the other? Or is it 1 player for each of the riverbeds and 1 player for each of the rivers, so that every player starts in another place?

Alysse may be our Lady of the North, but she is more familiar with the Kuglimz. Curgan wrote the icetribes and Pikel animals and the Hrugckuck grass (as my apprentice) in this area. I'm involved as well with the (not yet written) Himiko. So you might better ask them for guidance. Especially Pikel is about to write about the icetribe gods/religion. Would not hurt to contact both if you have questions. Curgan has commented on your horse anyway.

@ Takor    OK.  If I have any problems, I will check in with them.

@Irid  I will try to make it clear in the setup, but everyone starts at their own River, Dry Riverbed.  Then they travel in opposite directions so that they must pass each other twice before getting back to their starting position and winning the game.

Takor, though I may be more familiar with the Kuglimz, I am still the Northern moderator, and as such, Altario or anyone else should be expected to apply to me for permissions, assistance or approvals. If there is need to direct them elsewhere, I believe I am capable of doing so.

I didn't want to step on your feet, Alysse, I just wanted to point Altario to those people who have written the entries up there and developed the concept of the Icetribes. I don't remember, that you did take part back then in the discussion when Curgan wrote them up.

Well, back to the game here - it is a quite creative game, and I love especially the idea that the game is embedded into a culture, by making it a pastime for people working on leather products. Thus the equipment used for this game fits, and the environment as well, maybe with the slight terminology adjustments Takór proposed. I think though whether the climate is demanding or not, there surely is some pastime to use, no need to make a big affair out of it.

We can try to put the diagram on a better background, for example a parchment as we already did here and there, then I think the drawing as it is can also be used quite well to go with the entry, with some Photoshopping. I will try to do that when preparing the entry :)

So: Yup, a nice addition to our Games section, Altario, fresh and creative!  thumbup
