Far East Proposal

I recently had an idea for a civilisation (of currently undecided power and affluence) but I thought it improper to throw ideas out there without due course or reason. Mira however began speaking to me about the goings on of this 'Far East' section of the new(ish) map and I laid out my ideas to him.

He has informed me that some of the pre-existing ideas for the area might mesh well with what I had in mind (a Chinese/Japanese Far-east asian type civilisation).

As such, I took the oppurtunity to 'propose' these ideas as it were.

This group of people essentially will be strictly religious, their state effectively ruled by the religious leaders. Though I intend for there to be an official governmental head of state, the strings will be pulled by the priesthood due to the fact that lives of everyone (including said head of state) will almost entirely revolve around religious practice.

The religion itself is nothing sinister, similar in an essence to the idea of Buddhism. The followers seek to purify the three spirits within them- the spirit of the body (essentially, keeping themselves healthy in an balance with nature), the spirit of the heart (Morality, though the code of ethics is generally defined by the inconsistent priests- which is ultimately what gives them power) and the spirit of the mind (basically logical thought, giving the civilisation some emphasis on education and also meaning the priests can declare their wishes as 'true logic').

I had considered that the priesthood of these people (though many would be well-intentioned and responsible with regards to their power) many of them would in fact be corrupt- manipulating the state's resources for their own means, or even just on a personal whim. This ultimately means that we have a bunch of well-intentioned citizens who are often tricked into immorale or even unthinkable decisions, believing them to be the healthiest options for the purification of their spirits.

Upon discussion with Mira he suggested we give them Medieval/Feudal Japanese architecture (With a suitable twist of course) and the resource of gold (due to the many nearby rivers). This combined with the 'Zen'-esque nature of the religion we do have a group of people with a suitably East-asian feel, though not to an extent where we are simply cloning ideas from the real world- It still has originality.

Additionally, Miraran also suggested (and I immeadiately conformed to the idea) for a Sanryu based system (perhaps clerical) though this idea is very much so in the works.

What do my esteemed colleauges think?

Well, from a visual perspective, I'm in favour....

It would allow me to make some great new illustrations - borrowing from Korean and Japanese medieval architecture - and a broader variety of faces.  We have an illustration of Faugar's which shows a 'fighting monk' - very oriental-inspired, right down to the braided queue - and have never been able to integrate it as we don't have a people/tribe so described (black hair, epicanthic eyelids, golden-brown skin, broader jawbones, etc...)

I have secretly always seen the Krean as an 'asiatic' culture, with the elegance of the Heian Japanese and the wealth of the Ming Chinese... but I don't know if their appearance bears that out.   I used a famous East Asian chef as a model for my Krean mage and didn't hear any objections from Coren... :)

If we mixed things up a bit to create a range of hair/eye/skin colours possible with the characteristic 'Asian eye', we could have a lot more racial variety in our illustrations - something I favour.  Likewise, I'd hope for not just a one-to-one transference of cliched 'Orientalisms' into the Western Bay (nice reversal there, from the 'mystic east' to the 'logical West'.... ), as you've hinted.

Just as Azhira's Kaaer are sort of a cool mix of Norse and Amerindian, perhaps these people could be an interesting fusion of Manchu, Aztec, and Babylonian?   Just a thought... the results could be spectacular....

Some nice points Judy, your imaginative scope is always impressive.

Does anyone else have any input?

Another thought to add- If these Far Easterners do have gold that would surely make for some good trading relationships with the Nybelmer to the west of their realm (They like Shiny Things dont they?).

Well, you have to remember that trading gold with the Glittermer isn't that profitable.. they see value completely different from humans, and might reward you with a piece of driftwood in return. It's often best to give them some glass beads and pray you get pearls in return or something to that accord..

So their entire trading system is a gamble practically? Maybe we'll just ship Gold to the Lillivear or Kazai instead.....We can fetch driftwood ourselves....

im not sure how they work yet, but merfolk most certainly have no economy amongst themselves whatsoever, so trades are not officialised as humans would. But we will do something fun with these two tribes!

(1) Smart, yes, Human-like in their way of thinking, no. I don't want to deviate from the Merfolk=alien minds idea that suffused the Sarvionian mertribes.

Said 'Far East' realm is to be titled 'Scepteres of Tarshiïn' for future reference.
