I know the page said to send the information to the Administrators, but I didn't know who exactly to send it to, hehe...

I found this site that has some really good avatars and thought it would make a great addition to the character portrait list. They even break down the character categories.  grin

Well, I admit the pictures are superb.  Unfortunately we can't use them (except, unofficially, as avatars, I suppose, although most of us try to either have our own forum portrait drawn for us or use graphics which are outside of copyright) - every illustration on the site (www.santharia.com) is original, and either created for the Santharian Dream or used with explicit permission.   Thanks nonetheless, Ahleiya!

That site is quite popular on the roleplay side as many of those avatars are used for characters and NPCs...so yes, we are well aware of that awesome site!

I'm not sure if we should allow to use them even as avatars on the RPG site, for I didn't find anything which said, that the artists (and there are a lot!) have given their explicit permission to use their works. Maybe I have just not found it, but I know, that other sites I'm visiting are very restrictive in the use of avatars when it is not clear, if it is allowed to use the pictures or not.

Well, then it is probably a site which just collects avatars and doesn't ask the artist.... then we should not use it, imho
Who wants the Artimidor picture used by somebody else out there...maybe from a char playing a nasty bandit? ;)

But are they technically even allowed to do that?  I suppose they aren't for profit--but it still doesn't exactly seem legit to me.  I'd be pretty angry if someone was using my work without my permission or even crediting it to me.  At least some acknowledgment or accreditation should be in order here.

Can we ask them not to use stuff from our site without the artist's permission?

I think we definitely should send a firm but polite letter requesting them to 'remove the following pictures'.   Did you notice that Art's picture, which was a custom commission, has not only been stolen but MODIFIED? (the ruff has been removed and the face set over a piece of armour from some other artist's work).   I'd be really angry if I saw that happen to one of my pieces...

The other question is, should we allow to use avatars from that site on the RPG board? I searched a bit the net, but didn't find anythingwhich stated how the law actually is. But I know, that many forums I visit occasionally or a lot which I found just by using google are very cautious.

There is one link I found, where somebody got a fine, in German though: here

Oh, yeah, Talia, there are plenty of 'illegal' usages: I recognize several as book covers - Polgara from David Eddings, the Green Lady from Piers Anthony, and so on.   I don't know what these artists would consider 'fair use' - and the internet has badly blurred these boundaries.   But using commissioned works AND altering them is definitely unfair!

 It's one reason I always use Pre-Raphaelite (copyright expired) paintings for my avatars...   - which reminds me, I really should take the time and money to commission one of my own Santhavatars!   Of course, then I might see it used on a forum somewhere as 'Fat Lady with Lute', or something... :D
