The Hymn of Osthemangar

Just to let you know right now, I have plenty of music entries for Santharia, and I really don't know why I waited until now, but at least you don't have to wait very long between each one...

The one was inspired while I was reading the Netherworlds entry. Turn up the bass, close your eyes, and picture Osthemangar! It might even scare you.

My four-year old daughter was drawing happily on the floor this morning while I checked in to Santharia as usual. I opened 'Osthemangar' in a new tab and she looked up sharply with her small ears pricked and stopped working. After listening to it about halfway through she put her pencil down and announced firmly, "That's scary music."

"Why do you think it's scary, Kath?" I asked her. I hadn't had the volume up at the beginning of the piece, so we missed the initial 'screams', and I was curious about her analysis.

"Because of the 'toom', 'toom', 'toom' stuff,' she replied without hesitation, matching the beat exactly as it continued playing.

I played it again and here are her comments: "It's scary. Because the ghosts are stamping their feet like this," and she pantomined, again to the beat, "and there's a scream. And the crows with the scarecrow running by."

She's put her finger on it, hasn't she?

My two sans - the modified shrieks are very effective but the two at the beginning are a bit too obvious - one might almost say 'cheesy', like the tapes one can buy around Halloween. Run a couple of filters so that they are a bit more stylized, if possible, and I think you'll get a better effect. The pulsing beat and the 'crow' and 'rustling' sounds make a much subtler atmosphere of fear. If you like, you can even very slowly speed up your beat over the course of the piece to simulate a heart thudding faster.

Very cool, and I hope it can also be used in a dungeon in Santhworld as well... it IS scary!

Have to agree that the screams seem to obvious and didn't jump out at you enough. I believe there is an evil laughing soundnear the end{?}. That needs to be either much more subtle or much more boisterous, though those don't equate to louder and softer.

Just my quick opinions, though I'm not expecting on music. Modern music especially throws me for a loop.

Haha wow I'm glad it was so effective!

Yeah, I am considering this very rough because a lot of less noticeable things are really driving me crazy in addition to the scream and laugh problem, so hopefully I will have a much better version by monday...
