I'm going way back to the original post here.  I have been a machinist, and I must say that I do not see how a world such as Caelereth could have bolts.  In order for threads to work they must be very precise and consistent. Far more so than could ever be done by hammer and chisel. Rivets nails primitive staples or even screws could be feasible, but bolts need machinery with its accuracy in order to be created. The only way I could see bolts existing in Santh is if they were created through the use of magic, and I'd say that is a very far stretch indeed.  I hope this entry doesn't come to late, and like I said rivets can be used in place of bolts in almost all occasions.  Though cogs too need a certain level of symmetry and accuracy it is entirely feasible for them to exist, however, as they do not need machinery to make their teeth at least accurate enough.

Not at all Mies, your contribution is perfectly valid this late into the thread as well ^^ Aye, like you said, the concept of bolts seems too outlandish for Caelereth. Because of this we've decided to ignore that part of my initial question. Instead the concept of Mechkanika will be based around more simple mechanics and devices constructed or tinkered into existence by them. Similarly Mechkanika will also large include one man's idea and vision (Angor 'Mech' Krath) to pool knowledge and plans of devices which have been made to solve a problem, and to shatre this between fellow .. mechkanikers (haven't actually though of that descriptive word yet ^^) so that similar problems may be solved elsewhere. What do you think of that part of the concept?

As long as too much liberty isn't taken, I don't see why you couldn't make this work. I wish you the best of luck here.  :)

Aye, this won't take any liberties what so ever.. in fact I'm approaching it from the completely opposite direction: I will talk to delegates of different races and 'similate' who the concept of mechkanika would have affected their race or tribe (this can range from finding fellow followers, to the tribe closing off completely and not wanting to share anything) Once these parameters have been filled I will then go on to look for existing device entries which suit and should be mentioned... and only then, once all these road markers have been set, will I set out and trudge down the long and windy path of filling gaps, developing characters and stories about mechkanika ^^

One thing you might look into. The Victorian's did some amazing things with clockwork. All the way from a self playing pianos to the original "Flea Circuses". Springs might be a lot easier to make than bolts, and there are so many things you can do with them.

Oh, and dont forget about the various kinds of mills, most of them use cogwork to direct their energy
