Drawing inspiration from hellboy2 curse of the golden army I would like to create a longsword that can elongate into a glaive style weapon. Any thoughts?

How does it enlongate? Does the bearer carry a staff around with him that screws in to the handle of the sword? I haven't seen Hellboy, but I've always been fascinated by combination weapons.

The weapon in the film is used by Prince Nuada of the Elves. ( I love the fact that his name is the same as th Celtic god of War) It grows magically However I was thinking of something along the lines of a mechanical spring action system. Push a button and "click" it goes from a nice longsword to a spear.

You wouldn't get a very sturdy 'staff' that way though, would you? What with every segment needing to be shorter and smaller than the previous, not to mention the fragility of a spring opposed to the rather bumpy life of a sword...

If you didn't want to carry a large staff around with you, you could have the pole come apart in sections, and each section could go in a special pocket in a cape or coat.

The machanics seem a bit complicated and also seem to result in a weak polearm.  To have a whole polearm hidden inside the hilt of the sword seems a bit difficult to manage.  Would you consider instead a polearm with a sword on the end?  Where the sword can detach?  You could have a sword on both ends.

After much consideration and drawing and sketching and... Well unless the entire pole was made of metal as well it would be weak. The spring mechanism would actually be very simple as well as strong all it would be is a thick coil spring with a push button lock similar to a balistic knife. ( For those unfamiliar, a balistic knife has a heavy duty spring which launches the blade from the hilt to a lethal effective range of fifty feet.) It would not be a long pole, maybe 3 fore in length.  While not as long as many this still would give a significant reach advantage.
I didnt want to do a detacheable because that has a weakness wear the blade attaches. Also we all ready have a double ended sword called the Kilij somewhere in the weapons. I believe it is used by the Shendar, the desert dwellers.

The weapon in the film is able to change length because the hilt is made up of still living wood that is controlled by Nuada

Squeee! Hellboy! I love the films, and the comics very very much, and that sounds like such a cool idea. I'm sure, with enough thought, it could work quite well. Go for it, stormraven.

You're going to want to associate this weapon with a specific tribe, as it seems quite exotic. I don't see any Santharian tribes using such a weapon, to be honest. Maybe a Nybelmarian tribe would use it? The Krean? Or Kasumarii...

No, I would not want to live in a world without dragons, as I would not want to live in a world without magic, for that is a world without mystery, and that is a world without faith. And that, I fear, for any reasoning, conscious being, would be the cruelest trick of all.

I was actually thinking of placing it with the Kusanarii sort of a compliment to the moon blades

It's "Kasumarii", but yes, that could work. :)

Now I just need a name for it, something like the Kasumarii spring-blade, or maybe the Blade-Tree. Any thughts would be appreciated. In the meantime I am going back to work on my poisons entry I should have an update in later today or tommorow if work and life allow.

After a lot more thinking I am not so sure that this idea for a weapon is suited to Santharia. As Arti once said we seem to be developing a lot of gimmicky type weapons. Who would really use it? What pourpose would it serve other than to just look cool. However I have decided to create a Katar like weapon. For those unfamiliar a Katar is a large knife that is held with the blade extending out from the fist, like a punch dagger. Or for anyone familiar with the film Willow,
The sword Madmartigan uses near the end to fight general Kale. However mine won't be quite so long and narrow as that. If this is rambling I have been celebrating a new job and may be a tad inebriated so please forgive
