I will happily offer up, in the spirit of Alt's Addendum to Seeker's Suggestion, a second-place prize (an illustration for the entry which just loses out to the Whitewater Keep winning entry.  That place entry can then be revised and provided with its own unique details, which I will then create a custom castle picture for.  Sounds good?

:D  Wow.  Thank you, Bard.  Wonderful display of generosity on your part.  Most welcome, of course.  A medieval world needs castles. :)

I don't know, if Judy wants to create a new picture, if so, there is a third price, done by her also! :)

Edit Artimidor:

Sorry, but Judy would like not to offer this particular picture here, because it is very old and doesn't compare to the the current ones. So I removed it due to her request!

What a great idea! Another collaborative project!

Oh. And I'm kind of back. Tell you what - I shall atone (or perhaps I should say: a-tone ;p) for all the sins I have committed through my absence, chief among them not being around to uri-check Seth's marvellous festival as promised. What if I compose something to go along with the picture? Maybe a mood piece to aid the artist and contestants? Can I find absolution through that?  noidea

I know y'all been kinda focussing on moats, and stout walls, and spiked towers, and horned drakes, and heavy fortifications and all... but perhaps something a little more festive to balance it out won't go entirely amiss?

I had in mind a medieval festival - inspired by the crowds in the courtyard of the sketch, behind the gates. You know... All this childish, bubbly expectation... well... bubbling... behind a rigid, formalised social structure. I imagine kids - well, ok, let's be honest: brats - running up and down the place, people going up stairs, going down stairs, circling towers, taking in the view... The bubbly-ness balanced from time to time by a more sombre note, mature reflections.... as if the Warden of the Keep has also found himself swept up in the excitement. Though the bubbliness comes through a bit differently in him - as if he has not quite shaken the history and strategic importance of the keep.

The piece would be a melange of all these characters and moods. The "camera" now on the annoying children, now on the peasants crowded in the courtyard, ah look - now the guards and the Wardens...

EDIT: Ok, here we go. I finally swapped from Finale to Sibelius - and I have to say it feels like stepping off the treadmill and finding that your feet just GLIDE across the floor effortlessly. No more crashes, no more corrupted files, no more writing the same thing from scratch again and again and again. I should have listened to Gean years ago!

Sibelius/the computer is playing it a bit... flat. I wonder if we could find someone with decent keyboard skills among us to play it on a real piano... hehehe...

EDIT2: Argh... The file is too large. I am in a rush atm - I'll see if I can fix it or email it to Arti later on tonight.

I can't take on another entry, and anyway don't consider myself any good at writing about castles - but what a beautiful castle this already is, even without colour. Aura!

So far we have Alt and Valan in the contest. More are welcome.

Bard- that is wonderful. I look forward to seeing your picture once you have a description to work with.

Coren that idea sounds great to me.  An extra entry on the side to correspond with the castle is great.

Contest Proposal

As this is only a proposal, not an entry, lets not get too bogged down in facts yet, and some things that are not fully formed in my head are in parenthesis.

Whitewater Castle, built over 200 (up to 400) years ago, has never served as a military stronghold.  Instead, it was built as a testament to love by (insert title here) Arasmis Cahoulin to his wife, Lady Bryannha.  Unfortunately, the Lady died during the birth of their second child, when she was informed that on that very night, he was killed in a shipwreck off the castles shores (this is where the name Whitewater Castle came from).

Tragedy turned to the supernatural, as in years hence, Lady Bryannha has been spotted walking the ramparts or the shores of the sea as a White Lady.  As well, in storms, a ship can be seen off shore, floundering.

The spectre of the Lady seems to be a benign entity, casting a calm if sorrowful aura, while the shipwreck is more malevolent, with rumours of the dead crew coming ashore during storms and dragging victims back to their watery graves.

In the intervening years, the Cahoulin family has ruled Whitewater Castle, and divides the populace into two main factions.  Many look upon the family as victims, and in response to the White Lady, have established festivals marking the anniversary of her death, where the Castle is decorated and is filled with happy festival goers.  The others, many of whom have lost loved ones to the denizens of the shipwreck crew, blame the Cahoulin family.  Over the years, there have been attempts on members of the Cahoulin family, a few being successful assassinations.  Still, nothing has stopped the ghostly crew.

My entry will then form a juxtaposition between a love lost romantic tale, and a more sinister supernatural event.

What kind of sadist would tell a woman in labour that her husband had just been killed in a shipwreck?

I'm sure we can change that little detail very simply:  "The two were very much in love, and their union was blessed with a son and heir in short order.  Unfortunately, the Lady died upon coming to her second childbed - a miserable affair, as the infant was stillborn.  We can only be thankful for the small mercy that she was thus spared grieving for her husband, who, striving to reach home in time for the birth, was that same night shipwrecked just off the castle's seaward battlements..."

Poor writing on my part. :)  The news of her husbands death sent her into labour.  In my head, the child lived while she died.

But, truthfully, I can work with eiher scenario. :D

Ah!  No prob either way, especially if these two characters only exist for the sake of the castle's backstory and nothing else.  Makes sense the way you explain it above, so feel free to tweak or use any parts of my suggestion you like :)
