I woke up early (hmmm about 1:30am) and decided to try my hand at the mapping tutorial writen by the sage. I have access to GIMP, not photoshop, and so had to make do with some things (eg ... GIMP doesn't seem to have an airbrush). However, the following is my efforts to date .. I'm currnetly about half way through step four of the tutorial. Thoughts so far?

Without an airbrush you won't achieve very spectacular results. Look here.

oh thanks ... hmmm ... I wonder why I couldn't find the airbrush when I went hunting for it in their online manual ... anyway, I'll try it with the airbrush

And here it is with me using the airbrush ... it looks rather bad to me.

I suppose that like when I was colouring as a kid with pencil, i really need to be shading that in electronically in the same direction, instead of in many different directions?

Erm... This has really nothing to do with the tutorial, Dek. The tutorial doesn't tell you in any way to use airbrush to colour an area! You use a Fill tool for that.

I'm sorry Artimidor, but on step three of the tutorial it says to use an airbrush. It says nothing whatsoever about using a fill tool for the land ... it says to select the air brush tool, then it says to select a very large brush, then it says to start drawing somewhere on the sea, and return the opacity to a lower number again from time to time to see the drawing of the landmass on the background layer. From what I can see, it only says to use the airbrush tool at this step in the tutorial.

Do you mean that after I use the airbrush initially to do the outlines of the land masses that I then swap to uisng the paint bucket tool to do the interior of them, instead of what it seems to instruct in this step of the tutorial?

I did use the paint bucket tool as required in step two to do the sea.

You should follow the steps precisely as they are presented. Does your picture look anything like the one in the tutorial? If not, you've made something wrong. It looks to me as if you tried to "colour" the area later by using a way too small airbrush, the area isn't even properly covered.

If you want to do it as in Step 3 you need to select a really big brush (stated on the page), and then you draw one simple curve with that brush. Then you get a pic like this:

Make sure to check your airbrush settings and see what you can adjust, so that when you draw on the canvas you get a size and transition to the background approximately like this.

That is what I did, Artimidor ... I went back and coloured the area later using the airbrush ... and the largest one that GIMP had ... it was about 19 ... there were no larger airbrushes in GIMP than the one I used for it ... I tried increasing the number somewhat, but that didn't work either ... it still seemed to be the same size.

Ok ... I'll try making the diameter of the airbrush even bigger and try again ... at least I'm learning how to delete layers!
