Hypalynx
Overview
The Hypalynx, known to the R'Unorians as the U'arel, is a small bipedal creature that appears to be a cross between a feline and a monkey. This animal is native to the treeless islands of Eight Winds Bay, particularly around the Blue Druid settlement of Tyrling where the Blue Druids use them to help keep a track of their records and research. With blue fur that becomes streaked with grey as they become tired and in need of rest, trial and error by the Blue Druids have developed a set of three rules that if followed can lead to a long and fruitful relationship between Hypalynx and the sentient being that uses them. If the rules are broken, the Hypalynx becomes angry and noone would like to see a Hypalynx when angry.

Appearance
The Hypalynx is a small bipedal creature that stands slightly taller than the Brownies. Along with the U'arel of the R’Unor islands, they appear to be a cross between felines and primates, with the facial features of a cat, and the tail and paws of a monkey. In both breeds of this animal, the tail is used extensively for holding onto things, and in the case of the R'unorian U'arel, they also use their tail to hold onto trees.

While at rest, the Hypalynx have blue fur. When this tiny animal becomes active, their pelt becomes a deep purple in colour. Once exhausted, and unable to function any more, the creature's fur turns red and remains this way until they recover their strength and are once again able to organise, collect and deliver information for the compendiumist, druid, Blessed Sea Elf or other person who is using them.

The First Hypalynx
The first Hypalynx, the legends do say,
Chose to serve the Blue Druids, in work and in play
Near water, whether lakes, seas, oceans or streams
They helped the Blue Druids beyond their dreams

Hypalynx, Hypalynx, Hypalynx, Hypalynx,
Part monkey, part feline, they chatter and run
Hypalynx, Hypalynx, Hypalynx, Hypalynx,
Blue fur when they’re rested, and red when they’re done

The Hypalynx are friendly to elf and human,
To dwarf, halfling and Brownie whether woman or man,
They will happily serve any, and start loudly to hum,
Except around orc kind, who turn them quite glum

Hypalynx, Hypalynx, Hypalynx, Hypalynx,
Part monkey, part feline, they chatter and run
Hypalynx, Hypalynx, Hypalynx, Hypalynx,
Blue fur when they’re rested, and grey when they’re done

Now if you want one to help organise your opus,
Three rules you must follow or they’ll be furious,
Never feed them after midnight not even a treat
Never light them up, Never wet them, even their feet

Hypalynx, Hypalynx, Hypalynx, Hypalynx,
Part monkey, part feline, they chatter and run
Hypalynx, Hypalynx, Hypalynx, Hypalynx,
Blue when they’re rested, and grey when they’re done.

Researchers
Steferin the Blue is the premier expert on Hypalynx known to the Compendium, and he refers to himself as a Hypologist. It is only thanks to his work with these creatures over the years, that we know of the rules regarding the feeding and care of Hypalynx.
- Steferin the Blue
- Deklitch Hardin
- Other Compendiumists

Usage
For many years, the Blue Druids, including Steferin the Blue, have used the Hypalynx to help them to organise, access and store the information they have on the area surrounding their home at Tyerling on Eight Winds Bay, as well as on the element of water which they are reportedly able to command. Through interactions between the Blue Druids and the Blessed Sea Elves, the Hypalynx were introduced to the Arthyron tribe.

During the residency of Deklitch Hardin amongst the Arthyron of Eight Winds Bay in Northern Sarvonia, the young compendiumist was introduced to the Hypalynx by Steferin the Blue. Deklitch named the little fellow Tiberious and used the Hypalynx extensively to help organise his research and study notes. Through trial and error, Deklitch managed to learn alot about these creatures, incluidng the dangers of not abiding by the three rules of Hypalynx.

During his research trip to Ximax to investigate both the famed magical city and the academy located a short walk away, Deklitch took his Hypalynx with him. During this trip, the young Erpheronian learnt that the Hypalynx respond poorly to orcs, as evidenced by the creature trembling and drawing back from the Volkek Oshran residents of the Ximaxian catacombs. Other orcs, including the cookie munching Tharoc have also been brought into contact with Tiberious while Dek has been present with similar results. It is possible therefore that the Hypalynx could be used as a kind of early warning system by adventurers, traders, travellers and explorers should they be forced to travel through lands frequented by that race.

(snickers)    They are highly prolific creatures, in my experience.  Some sort of natural culling process of the young would be desirable...

Well, since Dek has decided to give me another R'unorian creature, I would suggest that these would be perfect to live in the southern portion of the forest of souls. The one that is occasionally set on fire.

Perhaps after they grow old and and unusable they are considered "broken".
