How does one get this close to a
Mountain Troll
and live to paint him?
Answer: Bring along a slow friend. Anyone seen Shabby lately?

WOW! Anatomically, painstakingly meticulous image you've captured, Seeker! I really tried to be critical, but I can't come up with any constructive criticism. Well done, sir, well done!

I'm liking this. It's wonderful. But this:
*The upper arm that is closest to us looks like it's oriented too far down to connect to the elbow off-picture. I can see that his shoulder isn't shown fully on-pic, but I'm taking this "criticism" from the orientation of the veins. They look like they're pointed down, but the elbow looks like it'd be just too far back.
*Those fingernails are creepy. Please make me less scared of them. :p
*The artist appears to have put a lot of effort into making those trees look like they fade into the distance. I.e. some of the further branches are lost in the fog. It gives the image a slight 3D effect. Even the troll's lip looks well-rounded and not just flat. But the tusk loses definition the further it goes up. Perhaps some darkening on one side of its point might make it look rounder?
Again, it's really just the top of the tusk, once it begins overlapping skin. Its base looks great.
*Second last thing: the troll's right hand (kind of pointing at us)? I can't see how it connects to his arm. The big limb bit on the other side of his arm looks too thick. I just can't make that out properly.
*Aaand, last but certainly not least, HOLY CRAP HIS NECK LOOKS AMAZING. I just noticed how well done that neck is. It is VERY well-defined.
Good stuff, altogether. Just a few things I thought I should point out.

why not Sordoc the Great instead of Shabby? He'd be trying to get closer to the troll, not away from it.

Imagine what his toe nails must look like! These things have some serious claws, which brings me to my only criticism: wouldn't a troll have less prominent finger nails since he uses his hands for most tasks (grabbing, punching, clawing, climbing mountain rocks etc). Makes sense that finger/toe nails would be more rough, short, jagged as opposed to what amounts to finger swords.
Also! To give a sense of scale for the size of the troll, perhaps add a skeleton of a horse or some orcen skulls around the troll as if he just finished a meal. By looking at the pic, its hard to get a sense of size.

Excellent picture, Seeker, and of course
aura +1
! Could use a size reference as has been pointed out, but other than that this one's a very effective troll portrait! But it's definitely a guy one wouldn't like to meet - he'd break you in two like a toothpick, I'm sure. However, seen posted in a relatively safe Forum environment it's the perfect picture to look at...

Bring along a slow friend.
As for Shabakuk: I've read a post somewhere on the RPG Board that he's quite busy at the moment with a lot of job related stuff which got him pretty swamped. So I don't know when he can make it back to the Dev Board again. He also still needs to test Chapter 5 of the Shoals. Maybe he got eaten by something or drowned in the Burning Sea...

That's more a criticism of my design than his execution of it.
So...
The claws are meant to be fairly short when held in comparison to the troll's overall size (3-6 inch claws on a 12 ft brute). The claws on this guy might be a little long, but I'm not entirely sure without a better idea of size in the picture.
As to rough, jagged, or even cracked: troll claws are meant to be made of pretty hard stuff. Trolls use their claws on each other (when mating, mostly...), so they have to be nearly indestructible to stand up to a troll hide.
And trolls don't have claws for toe nails. Just toe nails.

That statement gives an excellent idea of how coarse their hair must be (given that nails and hair are slightly different versions of the same keratin compound in humans), so that adds a whole new aspect to the accuracy of this image. The hair looks pretty coarse and straggly. I like that about the beard.

OK here is the update. i had difficulty with one of Cruciform's suggestions but i think it generally turned out Ok. I also added a necklace. The bone at the base of the necklace is actually the cows horn.

Hi Seeker!
Can't decide, if this fellow is friendly or not so friendly..
Two things which sprang to my mind:
- This is a troll, so it might be ok, but if trolls would have a human anatomy, the ear is far to near to the check.
- The background looks a bit flat at the first look, I would give it some more depth, a hint of something in the distance.
No, it is not a nice guy, I think I don't want to meet him

Well done, sir, well done! Good show, eh, wot?
Seriously, Seeker, I think you've done a good job incorporating all the previous suggestions. You give the bull's skull to give perspective as to size of the troll. You have some hazing of the tree limbs behind him to suggest distance/fading into the mountain fog. Once again, I am at a loss to come up with any constructive criticism. Great work!

Great additions, Seeker, looks very cool now!
Wouldn't worry that much about the ear being too close to the cheek - after all it is a troll, with strange proportions, so there might be the one or the other ear off (or both ideally
).
Love it! Now where is Vesk to finish his entry?

At four peds high (that's 12 feet to us non-metric Americans), I would think that skull would be a tad smaller. I know the troll is sitting down, but the skull size leads me to believe the troll is perhaps 6 or 7 feet, not 12 feet. Unless that's a really huge skull.

@Seeker: Any further adjustments on this one so we can finish it? The way I see it it shouldn't be anything major to get it done, and we could use it already in the Caaehl Mountains entry where these guys live. So if you can get final details on this one done during the weekend I'd love to get it in already
