Got a mail from someone, recommending www.netdragons.com as a good site we should check out concerning game development. Seems indeed quite interesting - Nate will perhaps try to establish some contacts here.

I have contacted netdragons.  I was familiar with vagabond's quest from last year when I was in the process of building the first beta of sorren.  They have been around for a while but are going out of business becuase of lack of funds.

I know how the guy feels.  Anyway the developer who developed that game is also studying 3d programming to try and make a 3d version of his game.  I think he's looking to get more into the strategy aspect in his 3d game and we are looking to get more into the rpg aspect in our now 3d game.  Creating the same thing all the time gets boring so it all makes sense.

I have attempted to make contact and will let you all know how it goes.

Didn't really want to look at all of that site, it wasn't organized very well in my opinion. (Too confusing to find out info that you didn't know where it was.) If someone's already taken a look, could you tell me what it was about?

Stormcrow,

I went to it, and signed up with a character.  Its basically a tournament fighter, a type based.  You give it commands, it calculates the outcome, I like it, but not terribly.  ALthough I am playing it right now, and losing miserably, too.

At yer service,

Ralhag

I didn't find the site very useful, the game was kind of dull.  He did a descent job with making a turn based text java game that involved 2 people and a chatroom.  But that's about all that was involved in the game.

I could use some information from him and maybe the java source code but after e-mailing twice I never got a response from the author.

i played it for an extended period of time...i think the game was more based around player interactions then the actual battles...it allowed you to grow in experience and chat with ppl at the same time...it was more social than anything...the arenas weren't all that user-friendly though...

another game i played...and still do...is utopia...games.swirve.com/utopia...it seems to be basically the same as sorren is right now and has grown to a user base of around 80k players...so there is some possibilities in that area...

I've played Utopia for way too long, and it's a very well established game. However, I'm not too happy with where it's going in terms of gameplay. Utopia is mostly about numbers, and for those who are into it, communication in the "kingdom forum" (where only the 25 people playing together in one "kingdom" can chat).

The social aspect can be awesome, I've made several good friends and it seems almost like a family after many many ages together. The actual game play is becoming fairly poor IMHO. I'm not sure the gameplay compares very well to Sorren/Santharia, it's supposed to be in a fantasy atmosphere, but other than the static names of races and units, it's not there, with frequent weird "naming themes" sounding like anything but fantasy ;)

The technical side of Utopia seems fairly simplistic, with the greatest issue probably being handling the sheer amount of players. Other than that it could be done with a bit of java script and a connection to a big database :p

I've noticed several of the other browser games (played several), and especially the fantasy/RPG ones interest me. I haven't particulary played Vagabond's Quest (seen the ads tho, incidentally inside Utopia, where I also found the banner ad bringing me here), or anything on netdragons. I'd love to try out many of these things, but have too many other things to spend time on, like this site. I'm sure the RPGs in particular could all provide some inspiration for how to improve on the Sorren/Santharia concept.

but then to each its own; we need to create our own style of game...for example, combining more than one game, that way, it will be interesting, so I think contacting one person is not enough...
