After observing the detail in my DM's maps of the Protectorate and the Shujen Kingdom (my science teacher is running v3.0 crossed with v3.5 D&D for us in his own homebrew world) - I asked where he recieved the maps from. He looked at me, and smiled and opened this little program, called Campaign Cartographer 2, abbreviated by CC2.

I got his copy of the program, when he got the upgrade to CC2 Pro, and have contemplated about making my own for my homebrew world of Daeru, and the Kinnerdales. So, I got off my butt and borrowed my exchange student's laptop (I don't have any MSFT OSs) and made some simple maps.

Hope no on else has said this before, but, err, CC2 and CC2 Pro especially, is a rather nifty, little program. If you can spare some time, feel free to check it out, right here @ profantasy.com - cc2.

Have a nice day,

Pascal

Yeah, I've heard about it and seen maps made with this tool. Actually I also installed a demo version. I guess its nice to get a map done pretty fast, but we also need to go for consistency in our map drawings, that's why I prefer to get deeper into the handdrawn maps with which I've started the site quite a while ago. Currently I'm working on the Manthrian Map. Though such maps take ages to be drawn, in the long run they are much more satisfactory:D

Though I thought about getting the tool just for inspiration to draw own map components based on the components you can find in the tool (hills, forests, ruins, houses, special temples, ships etc.). But I don't know if there'd be enough content in this respect - the demo only contained the very basics, but promised a lot more of such stuff in the full version.

Whoa that map was very impressive. Can't be purely hand drawn, or am I missign something? ;)

On the accounts of CC2, concerning the quantity and diversity of towns, rivers, mountains etc.; that version that I have has on approximation about 200 different symbols, while CC2 Pro has even more (something like 450+). And on top of that, I know there are sets you can download off the net. For example my science teacher has downloaded the oriental setting, which is pretty nifty.

Your choice Artim. :wink2

it is basically handdrawn, Maelle, though of course some mountains, houses  and tree groups are copied/pasted with this special tool the art programs have, right, Art?

I don't know this program of yours, but I have to say, I prefer something not everybody else can use as well for map making. I don't want to find symbols of Santharia on any other map of a foreign world.

It is handdrawn... err... mousedrawn (in Photoshop), yes, but of course I don't draw every single tree hundred times, but do a few and then copy them. Houses of course are heavily inspired by typical 3d studio houses, or the stone circle you see on the map is also loosely based on a stone circle you may find in the program you mentioned - though it looks much more detailed on the Manthrian map if you compare them;)  Mountains, hills etc. of course are often purely hand drawn to keep things unique where it is necessary, textures of grass/stone terrain etc. are then added to make it even more realistic. All in all a lot of work, though something that pays off eventually in a very unique map I hope - should I get this one ever finished... :lol

Well, with your skill, make sure you show me a copy when you are finished. That first work-in-progress one was rather inpressive. :wink2

I actually have had the demo of this proggie for some time.  It's a great little tool.  As I understand it, with the registered version, you can create your own artwork as well as symbol libraries.  I think you can import graphics from photoshop style programs.  So in that respect, I believe you can retain that great hand drawn look while saving loads of time.  Since I have only the demo, I usually screenshot what I've done and play with it in PSP, so there are more possibilities to make it look hand drawn.  A good example is on the profantasy website in the download libraries.  Someone did a map of Boston some time in the 17 or 1800's and it looks like it was hand drawn on parchment paper.

Anyways, that's just my .02

I think it's an interesting tool as well, at least it makes it quite easy to get a map done without much knowledge in map making. Also the fact that you can constantly expand your library on map items is nice. But what it cannot really provide without the help of an external program is individuality and uniqueness of the map, that's why I prefer to compose the maps in Photoshop. There I can use half transparent images, apply textures and draw things myself in order to connect e.g. some mountains, which were just simple stand-alone elements before. I also want the map to appear more drawn than composed out of elements and CC2 can't provide that. Sure, that's all a LOT of work if you want to do it properly but in the end it pays off I think and you get something really unique. However, I've purchased some CC2 elements for Santharian re-use (with permission from the authors to alter them), because in combination this looks great I guess. Still need to finish the Manthrian map, though. Have to contact the vector graphics guy again as he we wanted to get some more unique Santharian symbols done.

Latest version of the Manthrian map BTW is here:
