2 questions:
1. Will this influence Keekoo's time in Marcogg? (see Keekoo entry)
2. Is there still a possibility for the Memnoor tribe to be taken to Aeruillin by the Avennorians?

Looks good.....been watching the developments. Glad you got some recent history.

No, I don't believe it should hinder Keeko Grey.

The complete tribe and its history are now done. I've redited it and if there are no discrepencies in the history, or comments than I will put it up for Arts approval by the end of the week.

Thanks for all who helped me.

...as they seem to be fairly well destroyed by that time....

I will do the Bestiary description of oysters, as we are obviously going to need them for the pearl supply!

I'd also like to consider other 'animals' or beasts which might also secret a nacre-like substance to produce different types of pearls - imagine, for instance, a small amphibian similar to a newt with large ears.  It builds up a protective substance around little bits of grit and dirt that lodge in its ears; eventually it may have from ten to twenty small shiny purplish nodules inside its earflaps.  The nodules can be removed and polished and set into brooches, rings, and other jewelry, as hemispherical shapes.     Your Avennorians could be the specialist harvesters, and develop a trade with my Theregerim back and forth for jewelry making (coz dwarves HATE water but like working with different kinds of precious stones!)

Or how about a bird which develops gizzardstones coated with the precious metals refined from the gravel it swallows to help grind and digest its food?  The resulting small stones would be smooth, rounded, and gleaming with a metallic lustre.  Interested?

This week I'll start working on descriptions for the three above.

Grey, I'm not sure about that brownie tribe. In my entry I state that they did find the continent before, maybe during those years when there are no records, they still did go to the continent and the brownies hitched a ride then.

Bard, I like the ideas, looking forward to see what you come up with. and yes I'd like to trade with the dwarfs.

Interesting people. They are starting to sound more like seals than humans, but yeah.

And I side with the tree-huggers here. It wasn't very nice of them to try to take the forest to use as lumber-yards. Greedy... Ahem. Anyway...

Really nice tribe, Capher! Read it now thoroughly upon integrating - good ideas everywhere, congrats! You're really a tremendous help filling history with life... :)

BTW: Talia, your're father isn't by chance Okar Snivild and you're writing an drawing under a pseudonym? Would at least make you "temendously wealthy"... *grin*

BTW2: We still have nobody who uses the ship picture I proposed. I see there's a story about Barek, sailing back to Darknar (Doranthakar) and he "disappeared", obviously during the Mir'Dark. Couldn't there be a myth somehow fit in here, ending in this ghostship (as it most likely is I guess)? And the Avennorians still are on the lookout for Barek's ship etc.?

Thanks Art, coming from you that is a great compliment.

It could work Art about the ship that is, but I thought someone else claimed it? or wanted it?

Well, there was a little discussion, but nobody put his foot on it, shouting: "It's mine, mine, mine... And I'm rushing off immediately to do an entry." As your tribe has much to do with ships I thought it would be the most logical to use it here. If nobody objects and you'd like to work on such a story behind the ship, I'd say you can grab it:)

Capher : now that I've read it and can comment somewhat semi-intelligently....

How does this sound to you?

Relationships between Avennorians and Merfolk

I am developing the merfolk into a simple, low-sentience race which communicates most closely with whales and dolpholk (to be invented - think very smart dolphins) .  They eat fish and are not sentimental about the natural cycle of eat-or-be-eaten ... however, because of their close relationship with the whales they are fairly protective of them (rather like the way in which a four-year old can be protective of her baby brother).  Thus while they will make friends with sailors and fishermen who have trinkets and take the time to communicate, I would guess that they abhor whalers and avoid them.

The smell of whale-blood and flensed blubber hangs about the whalers' ships and persons and would leave a detectable trace (at least to merfolk's nasal passages) in the water for some time.   Whalers who see mermaids in the sea ahead that day know that they had better put back to shore, since the hunting will be poor.  They surmise that the mermaids warn the whales, and a number of observant Avennorians have claimed to have heard Mersong warnings going out under the water, and to have seen the larger fish in the vicinity fleeing from their approach.

So - let's say that merfolk avoid your tribe, and your tribe have seen but don't usually come in contact with merpeople.  Like seals and killerwhales, they try to avoid each other.   Perhaps your Avennorians might even hunt the merfolk,  since they consider them less sentient?

What do you think?

Will get back to you on the dwarven trade and oyster thing...

Art, will take you up on the offer of the ship. I want it, so I claim it.

Bard, I see no problem with your discussion of the relationships between the merfolk and the Avennorians, I do have a suggestion though, just something to think about. In my entry I say that the Avennorians sacrifice children to Baveras for good hunting. If the child drowns then it is assumed that Baveras has approved ot the sacrifice and their will be good hunting. If somehow the child escapes then there is not going to be good hunting. This is my suggestion.

How about the reason Baveras accepts the sacrifice is because the merfolk actually take the child and make them one of their own. So for each child taken by the merfolk Baveras allows the Avennorians a whale. This could be just a myth or reality?  What do you think?

Capher:

The hunt is one of the most important occupations in hunter/gatherer societies, so there could be all kinds of reasons/superstitions/beliefs around the process of the hunt - why it worked, why it didn’t work, etc. It could be that your tribefolk have various personal beliefs - “I didn’t wear my favorite stained sealskin shirt on the hunt today, that’s why I didn’t catch anything” or “There was a ring around the moon last night, that always means good hunting” and so on.

So there could be a variety of reasons and ideas regarding the hunt.  However, I like the idea of changing the sacrifice (my least favorite part about these guys!).   I wonder if merfolk would really adopt and raise human (well, quasi-human) children?  They don’t have high intelligence OR strong maternal instincts in reality.  Nor could they cross-breed, since male and female mers both only have cloacal openings (like fish).

BUT  it would make a good myth - sort of something to salve the Avennorian conscience.  A possible logical musing:  “Well, when we throw them into the sea, it is a test of their worthiness to be Sea People.  If they are worthy, the merfolk will take them to live with them - and Baveros will  allow us a whale in return.  If they are unworthy, they will no longer be part of our race, and we will have strengthened our people....”   Something along those lines?

And the reason it REALLY works is....the Avennorian priests go out on a large boat with their sacrifices, burning various dried herbs, ringing bells, etc. and making a huge ritual fuss.  Merfolk are attracted to the commotion (and the fire) and often come and watch the rite when the child is ‘given to the sea’.  This allows the Avennorian sailors and whalers who have quietly gone about their day’s work to hunt relatively undisturbed, and of course reinforces the myth whenever observers on the boat spot a mermaid’s head above water.  “See!  There are the merpeople, ready to take our sacrifice!  Baveros smiles on us!”  Etc....

P.S.   Avennorian pearl divers,  by the way, will need to wear at least a belt when they go diving - something to attach their knife or prybar to, and to hold the bag they need to collect whatever items they are diving for!
