Ban-Yuk Ogres

Overview- Living in the Tandala Highlands, these Ogres live along side with there not so pleasant cousins, the Trolls. Ogres fight with the Tandala Trolls for cave rights, territory, and dominance over the Tandala Highlands. Battles have raged on for years on end yet no battle has been too organized to end each others total population. Ban-Yuk Ogres are not a clan but a territorial race. Very few Ogres, if any, can seemingly stay together and work as a group or family.

Appearance- Ban-Yuk Ogres are neither the biggest of all Ogres, nor the strongest, and yet they are the most atrocious looking. A face of the Ban-Yuk Ogres can often look like a bashed up version of an undead creature?s face. The shoulders are very stout and alined with one another. Ogres are also rather tall, coming to an immense average of 2.7 peds in height. The skin of these Ogres is typically a light brown color most of the time, though often males come to a darker brown than females.

The muscular build is not that of some of the other Ogre tribes, though it is still very impressive. The chest muscles are most impressive. The raw power of these Ogres can easily manhandle a Troll, though the height of a Troll gives it advantages over the shorter Ogre. Eyes glow red at night and the sockets are usually red as well. This helps in intimidation of enemies, plus enhancement of vision through the glooming nights. Legs are unnaturally short, and look stout and abnormal. The legs of these Ogres grow shorter than most would expect, making them look clumsy. The upper body is quite tremendous as the chest is broad at 1 ped in length (or more).

Teeth are yellow, and fall out often, though they grow back within five to six days. The teeth grow straight down, which can often cause problems in closing the mouth all the way. Crooked teeth are also up to infectious diseases. The teeth are used specifically for eating, and are not used for fighting because they can easily fall out. An Ogre with no teeth cannot eat, and Ogres must eat to survive. On the top of the mouth anywhere from 30 to 40 teeth are grown, as the bottom of the mouth  holds around the same amount.

Hygiene is not a favorite subject for these Ogres. Rarely every bathing, the stench of these Ogres are vast and can reek very badly. This stench can actually be so bad that it drives away enemy Trolls, or even thieves at night. The only time it actually baths is during hot days, when it goes into a local pool to cool off. Other than that Hygiene is not  part of there behavior.

Nails or claws on the fingers are usually torn off by scraping against something, but usually grow back as quickly as teeth. The nails never become very long due to the fact that they are always being worn or torn away. The claws can help in moving or maneuvering objects as well, such as food. The claws are never used for battle as they tend to be too weak to be used for any type of offense.

The face of a Ban-Yuk Ogre cannot be described. There are so many variations, and possibilities to the outcome that it varies from ogre to ogre. Scars can create indentations and cause a dirty outlook. The Ban-Yuk Ogres, overall, have a very hideous and ugly appearance.

Territory- The Ban-Yuk Ogres used to live in the eastern most part of the Tandala Highlands, but for some reason spread more westward to occupy more of the Tandalas. The immigration expanded the population, thus, from the very first mountains in the east to all across the Highlands, comprising one of the largest territories among ogre tribes. This can be attributed to both the inhabitability of the mountains to many race, as well as their long residence within the Tandalas. The first sightings of ogre inhabitance were recorded as being in the low foothills of some of the south-eastern mountains. From there, the Ogres spread across the range, encountering Trolls. Specific ogre territories tend to be in the foothills where most of the vegetation and wildlife reside, though there have been a few reported cases of ogres living high on the mountainside. Some ogres prefer this because there are no skirmishes over cave rights.

Ogres are only territorial if there cave has been invaded. Ogres can live with other Trolls peacefully if there is nothing to fight over. Since most of the population of Ogres do not have caves, they are not considered a territorial race.

Goc-Oc (Goblins) reside in the Tandalas as well. Ogres see these small creatures to be there enemies and often fend them off just for coming in contact with them. The exceeding number of Goblins to Ogres makes them a threat for the Ogres thus disputes take place.

Coat of Arms- Though there is no actual COA's that represents the Ban-Yuk Ogres, they do have a common way of marking there territory. Any space of land or cave that owns to a specific Elder or Ogre, will have a carved an "X" shaped mark into a nearby object. To make sure that it is unique, the Ogre will urinate onto the "X" therefore marking the "X" as his very own. The range between territories is really unknown, though whole caves are owned when marked.

People- The Ban-Yuk Ogres seemed to adapt to there new grounds very quickly. They learned what they could use for resources, what foods there were, and what other species who lived around them.

The Ogres particularly do not like the Gob-Oc Goblins. The Goblins of the Tandalas rarely get into fights for they would not stand a chance, but theives often prove handy. At night Goblins go into Ogre territories and steal any resources that they can such as foods, coal, or even Capricus Goat horns if lucky.

The Ban-Yuk Ogres do not have a very good social structure. They do have a communication system that is built from grunts and growels, but that is about all. Mother Ogres may or may not stay with new born babies, though the father always leaves after mating. A family of Ogres is a false statement. If any, only two or three Ogres may stay together for a short period of time.

There is somewhat of a Governmental structure though, even though the social part lacks. Elder Ogres are respected greatly, and often have the upper hand in making decisions for a region of Ogres.

Housing- None really, they sleep on the ground using rough materials or just rocks to lean up against for aid in sleeping. That is unless a cave is overthrown by an Ogre and he defeats any Trolls living within it. Then the Ogre sleeps with shelter. Caves are kept strictly to one Ogre. That would be the Ogre who owns the cave. If any others challenge for the cave, they will have to take on the owner. Inside a cave is a set place for a fire to keep warm on cold nights. The circle is usually just a set amount of wood that is partially burned or ashes that have been set about. Other than that the cave is not really used to store anything, or do anything else but provide shelter for sleep at night.

Clothing- Very few cloths are worn. One prized possession worn by these Ogres are bone necklaces made from bones of there enemies and victims. Many of the Ogres use some type of plant or material to connect the bones. On the body, only a small torn piece of animal skin that cover the front and back of the private parts is worn, if any. Most of the time an Ogre is seen with only a bone necklace or just his weapon.

Some Ogres can grow hair on there head, but if hair is grown anywhere then its on there backs. When it is grown on there head the hair is usually torn off because of annoyance. When the hair is grown on the back nothing much can be done other than rub it off against rocks or trees. They do not groom there hair in any way.

Food- Ogres rely on meat. Fresh, old, cooked, it really does not matter. Fresh meat is the largest part of there diet. Some desperate Ogres who have been blood-driven and have not eaten for days, shall even resort to cannibalism. This may be rare throughout the Ban-Yuk Ogres but most Ogre types should go for anything at any time anyways. Ban-Yuk Ogres do not usually rely on speed to capture enemies, thus making the most unforeseen conclusion of the Ban-Yuk Ogres. The Ogres of the Tandala Highlands have learned stealthy tactics. Hiding in large quantities of bushes or camouflage as rocks are common ways to capture there prey. Once close enough, one blow to the head or a strangling may pursue.

The only way that an Ogre can eat cooked meat is if they come across meat at night. They do not hunt at night so eating cooked meat is rare. They usually have a fire going at night so they will just hold the meat across the fire until it becomes well done or even burnt.

Every Ogre hunts on there own. It truly is every Ogre for themselves. There is one rule off that, which is respected by most Ogres across the Tandalas. That rule is to feed the young Ogres at least a portion of there meal to younger Ogres. When an initial kill is made, any nearby younger Ogres will surround the dead prey and wait for there turn and piece of meat. Not always do they get a share of meat yet they can hunt smaller game. Once again not all Ogres do this for some are berserk and blood-driven for foods.

The Sarvonian white deer is a favorite hunt by the Ogres. Though an extremely hard prey to catch, the meat on the Sarvonian white deer is greaty appreciated. Sometimes the furs from the deer are also used for the very few clothing that they where.

The Capricus goat on the other hand is only hunted for its horns. An Ogre will try to catch one of these goat's horns because it is such a sharp object and does not have to be sharpened for usage.

Weapons- Ban-Yuk Ogres commonly use branches off trees just to lengthen there reach. No weapon is really needed. Other weapons include throwing rocks, bashing rocks, or other various rocks. Sometimes when and Ogre has nothing else to do, and that happens allot, they will begin to sharpen the end of whatever object they have. So allot of the time the branches they had picked up, or the rocks they were using have very sharp ends which is very useful in battle.

Capricus Horns are used in battle, though it is very rare to see an Ogre with such an object. To catch this goat would be a feat almost impossible because of the speed of the goat.

Occupations- There are four noticeable  occupations held by these Ogres.

Warrior: This one is  mainly for the males. The male Ogres are usually warriors that fight for territories and such.

Mothers: The females are usually the caretakers for the baby Ogres. There is no real social structure to follow for the Ogres. Therefore ranks are not given or taken.

Elders: The other occupation is only earned through time. These are the elder Ogres. Elders are respected greatly and are usually more wise as then other young versions.

Berserkers: This is not really a chosen occupation and can be caused by many things.  Going without food for days on end can set an Ogre into Berserker mode. Anger, and other things may come into play. When they are in this form of mind, they have increased strength and no deliberation for others. This can be the most dangerous occupation for an Ogre.

The women Ogres can only take care of young until so long. The young grow very rapidly though so after a year of protection under there mother they should be ready to hunt smaller game. Not all Ogres make it to adulthood, in fact many do not.  The mothers hunt for there young, and protect them within the first year of development. After this the mother leaves and goes off to mate again.

Natural Resources- Coal is often used to make fires. Deep in the depths of caves, coal can be found within the compounds of the walls. Other rocks can also be broken to receive coal. Many times Ogres will use repeated blows with some type of sharp object to brake into rocks or dig deep within the mountain-side for coal.

Government- Most of the time the Ogres can get along good and not fight each other. When minding there own business, they are usually far off somewhere else in there mind to notice anything or anyone else. This can be dangerous for attacks can be set off easier.

Most Ogres will listen to Elder from there own areas. If the Elder gets mad then most chaos will stop. There are berserk Ogres though, who will go on rampages without consideration of others. These ones cannot be stopped unless they come out of berserk mode or they die off.

When cave rights are challenged, the Ogres will fight to the death in most cases because running seems to be dishonorable. Often times when the cave owner is a troll, then the challenging Ogre will just try to simply push the Troll out of the cave and into the open. For some reason the Trolls seem to think that they have lost when they are pushed out, thus victory is awarded to the Ogre.

Mating- Male Ogres have a very distinct  way for attracting there female partners. Oddly enough a fight does not pursue.

The first step is to make a call into the air. A male Ogre comes and prepares himself for competition. Instead of fighting they use a form of intimidation. They jump high into the air and slam both fists into the ground to see who can make the ground shake more. After it is all said and done, a female Ogre chooses who had the best performance and then they mate. Often times the loser will become jealous and start a fight with the winner. This ruins the whole purpose of the other competition but its just another way to see who gets to mate. Not always does the winner of the fight get a chance to mate, thus making the process very difficult and confusing.

History- With a pretty simple history, the Ogres made a great journey to a new home. Originally from the territory belonging to the Baal Ogres, they split up and headed up north.

Around 100 a.S were the first sightings of Ogres traveling into the Tandala area. A local farmer from the town of Acht wrote in his journal:

"The beasts were great. Great in size, strength, and intimidation. There numbers on the other hand, were not so great. It seemed that the numbers were only two hundred Ogres, if even that much. Many were wounded or had newly bred scars on there bodies. Battles, or even a war they may have gone threw. My farm is one of the most outer layers of the town, thus not many others saw the Ogres, and fear was not drawn to these great beasts. They all looked very tired, and I grew impatient for the first Ogre to strike. But, the Ogres for a very odd reason did not even bare to look at the food within my farm."

--Journal from unknown farmer--

These great Ogres actually originated from the Baal Ogres in Rimmerins Ring. In 22 b.S., when the Santharian Kingdom was founded, the Kingdom strictly stressed civil tribes over uncivil. Ogres were definitely uncivil. Though with an established communication system, Ogres did not have much more. Many years passed and Rimmerins Ring had allowed the Baal Ogres to stay. After seeing how uncivil they were, in the year 98 a.S, the Ogres were given a choice to either become civil or move farther up north. The people in Rimmerins Ring were slowly pushing them away for uncivil acts, thus the Baal Ogre tribe was split into two groups. The Baal Ogres who stayed in Rimmerins Ring began to act somewhat civil, in that they dressed more often, and began to trade with inlanders of Rimmerin's Ring. The other group of approximately 300 Ogres began a journey up far north, to a new home. Many did not welcome there presence, and many fights pursued along the journey as a result. This timeline of events will show events from there horrendous journey, there journey to a home in witch they didn't know existed.

98 a.S, The Departure- Half of the Baal Ogres decide to make a journey to a new home. A home in witch uncivil rights were not attended to, and civilness did not have to exist. With no supplies at all they began a march up north. Right away the Vandrina River was approached.

98 a.S, The Thaehelvil River- The Thaehelvil River is found, and is the first obstacle  for the former Baal Ogres. They decided to cross, and some fatalities are a result. About 10 of the Ogres died by drowning.

98 a.S, The Plain of Truoor- The Ogres come upon the Plain of Truoor. It is here that the Ogres first rest for a few short days. Allot of the time they straight traveled, and had no time to sleep for anxiousness was built between all of the Ogres. Some foods are eaten here, though not all the Ogres found it easy to capture deer, specifically the Santhalian Black Heart. This was not to smart by the ones who craved meals and great hunger.

98 a.S, The Fores- Ogres begin to travel into the valley in-between the High and Low Fores. It is here that it seems peaceful, though they were wrong. On the way into the valley, some Ogres dropped dead, seemingly from poison contained in the Santhalian Black Heart meat. This left the numbers to a crucial 280 Ogres. Others grew sick from the meat and could not go on. They became dead meat for other scavengers alike to eat. All in all the numbers dropped to 270.

99 a.S, The Quia Attack- The Ogres are resting peacefully at night in the Valley of the Fores, when they are ambushed by the clan of Quia, who ultimately belonged to the Eyelian Men. The Quia (Bear Tribe), saw these massive beasts as threats in Rimmerins Ring, and thus followed them until they made a stop. When night fell an ambush pursued. The Quia numbers were among the 500 mark, as a more local Quia group also aided in the attack. All in all the Ogres fended off the Quia men, though casualties were a result once again. This time the number of Ogres dead were among the 50 mark, and around 220 Ogres were left to travel.

99 a.S, Arrival at Jernais- The Ogres have made it out of the Valley of Fores successfully, and begin there march once more. Very thirsty, they desperately search for a water source. They travel all across the Heath of Jernais, and after days of travel arrive at a river. The Ogres drink and rest at this spot.

100 a.S, A Brief Rest- The Ogres decide not to cross the river for it is much more wide, and probably deeper than the one before. So they decide to travel up with the river than against it, thus making it easy to stop for a drink.

100 a.S, Holm and Acht- The Ogres come to the town of Holm. Instead of walking blindly into territory, they actually learned from previous acts to avoid that. They walked around the town, and soon came to another town (Acht). They also avoided this town and continued there journey up.

101 a.S, Another Crossing- The Ogres come to a low spot in the river and decide to cross. No casualties occurred.

101 a.S, A New Home - The Ogres come upon small marshes, these indicated at least some type of shelter. They continued to march up into the very low point of the Tandala Mountains. It is here that many abandoned caves are found and prey is plentiful. Not many others seemed to disturb them as they approached, thus there new home was found.

The numbers grew steadily over the years, and the Ogres spread across the Tandalas. These Ogres, formerly known as Baal Ogres, were named from other locals, as the Ban-Yuk Ogres. At this current date, 1660 a.S., over a thousand Ogres can be found across the Tandala Highlands.

Is there any explanation for why their eyes 'glow' red?  Is this some sort of 'magical' aberration?  Or is it just that like an animal's, the back of the eyeball reflects in a certain colour (in this case a reddish reflection rather than a green shine)?

What kind of trolls?  You said they fight for cave rights so are you talking about Cave Trolls?

Radaroc, we don't actually have "kinds" of trolls yet. Many trolls live in caves and others simply wander around nomadicallys in groups of no more than 30. However, there isn't a certain kind of Troll we've dubbed "Cave Troll." Just so you know. You're welcomed to do an Entry on Cave Trolls, though. ^_^

BTW: Run your entry through spell check, Erutan. It makes things a lot easier for Arti if you do.

Hmmm... you make it sound as if Trolls were weaker than Ogres. While that might be right in muscle comparison a grownup Troll can reach up to 5 peds, an Ogre only to 3 peds so they're a pretty equal match in all aspects.(Ogres possibly broader with stronger muscles)
I would tell more about the territory, it is not that Ogres would claim that land or think as themselves as Ban-Yuk Ogres, they're just scattered over that region and named this way by others.

Your 5-10 Oogres also contradict my general entry that makes ogres generally stay alone except for special reasons like mating and child bearing. This will be esspecially true in a mountainous region where you encounter geographical boundaries (high mountains, cliffs, unpassable valleys) and a general lack of extraordinary food sources. The Ogres would starve or turn against each other in such a region because they cannot find food for 5-10 Ogres in a couple of days.

A suggestion about trolls:
As we have various troll races at least mentioned I'd think that they should look pretty diversive, maybe in a way similar(but not like!) Ents in LOTR do.
The currently mentioned Troll species would at least suggest such a diversity and an alignment to the territory they reside in. I esspecially want to prevent Trolls that look like Ogres because what's the point of that! :)
Btw: A major difference might be that Trolls are more social and more a way more intelligent which should be countered by low numbers.

my 2 cents.

I'm not an expert like Koldar, but I have done a fair amount of entries. My advice:

Stay away from opinion ("...and look funny.")
Stay away from sarcastic remarks ("encountering there lovely cousins, the Trolls.")

Okee I shall edit. BTW more additions. Plus I need suggestions on the history, though the Ban-Yuk's are a fairly new tribe. The only history really is the 3rd Sarvonian War.

Did the Ban-Yuk Ogres split off from some other tribe of Ogres long ago? If so, Why? You can make up some history, you know.
