Bah, so I guess that was wishful thinking Talia!  It turns out that with living now so far from the city (one hour by bus, instead of a 30min walk or half that by bus) I can't log on except for early mornings and late evenings.  Add to that, my lack of broadband (soon to be remedied, yay!) and the fact that sometimes dad works from home and needs the computer, and I'm really stretched for time  :(

However, I found some time this morning to have a look at it, and came up with a question which I feel should be asked, though whether it needs a seperate thread is open for debate.

It says in various entries that Avennorians founded Chrondra, but on the map it says it is within Serphelorian territiory.  That, to me, speaks of war.  Which is great, fun to write, but I want other people's opinons on this as it's adding a massive chunk of history to both the Avennorians and the Serphelorians.  So:  do we want just one war, where the Serphelorians win, or many wars? (I'd go for one big raid where the Serphelorians take Chrondra, followed by more-or-less constant skirmishing between the two peoples, some of which are more remarkable than others, myself).

Opine away!

Edit:  Ok, so it turns out there is no information on the Serphelorians at all, except that the ancient Sophronians became a part of them.  Their history ends even before the W.o.t.Chosen.  So am I to build a whole new tribe here?  Eek!  Suddenly this Chrondra project looks a whole lot bigger :lol   Tho coming up with a way to mingle Serphelorians with maybe Eyelians, Avennorians, or some exiled Erpheronians, to make a new tribe before the WotC does sound like fun...  (quick, stop me before I get going! :lol )

At least you get your broadband back soon, Grunok! So let's hope for the best:)  :thumbup

But its good that you haven't forgotten about this project, even if it seems to entail so many things all of a sudden... :lol  - And indeed you've reached an area here, which is only described in very rough terms. You seem to think however that the Serphelorians are an independent tribe from the Sophronians, which - as far as I know - is not the case. The Sophronians travelled south from the north (which wasn't that much north back then actually), and finally built a large capital, Sophronia. *digs up the map thread he has made back then with Talia* See here. As it isn't really described very well on the site, I have the theory that Sophronia was pretty much a town-kingdom and evolved around it. From that perhaps a new name derived: "Serphelorians", this could mean in an ancient tongue something like "around" (ser) "town" (phel) "people" (rians) or something like that. At least that's what I thought.

Then the wars with the Avennorians could have happened. This large town of Sophronia nowadays quite obviously is in shambles, so the Avennorians/Eyelians must have eventually managed to be victorious. I personally would suggest to make this kingdom rather weak compared to others, so that we have a good opponent (and preferably more a "loser" here with this tribe). The capitol could be pretty powerful, but its power probably doesn't reach to the borders of the kingdom (maybe we could call it differently, not "kingdom"). So there could be regular border disputes etc. and eventually the heart of the "kingdom" crumbles to dust and while the rest still exists a bit, it has no other option as to finally join the Tharian kingdom. - That's a pretty rough outline I could imagine as a first approach.

Well, someone mentioned somewhere to perhaps just try to do Chrondra without the history.  I had a bit of a go and came to the conclusion that this is impossible; I would need to figure out who built it to decide what it looks like.  So, keep your eyes on the History forum where I plan to (eventually, hopefully sooner rather than later but at some point anyway) post the modern history of the Serphelorians:  where they are now, how their capital came to be ruined, and perhaps most saliently, how Chrondra fits in to all this.

Well, the original inhabitants were the Darian, and obviously it fell not under Avennorian rule.

Hey kids.  Doing some work on this today (shh, I know there's the picture to work on too, but I figure if I can do some work on Santharia, that is better than none, right?  Hehe).

Since the last update, we have developed the Serphelorians and their history, and decided when Chrondra was founded and by whom (no Darians - it's as part of a treaty between Sophronia and Avennoria).  I am now just trying to figure out how big the city should be, and who lives there.

I want Chrondra to be a relatively big city, as it's been around a long time (pre-WoTC) and there's a university-sort-of-place there, and it's the seat of the person who runs the Grassen Steading.  However, I think it's probably meant to be smaller than Marcogg (which, as we know, already has numbers-trouble).  According to this thread, Marcogg should be around 25 000 people strong, so I'm imaging Chrondra could be about 15 000 people.  It's quite a different city in character to Marcogg, and central in the Kingdom, so I think the area can support that population.

Just some thoughts as I get into this!  :)

Grunok

I am excited about a new city.  I really enjoyed drawing Milkengrad. Cities are great.

If you have not already you can also look at the Manthrian Province Overview which provides the population of all the developed cities in Manthria.  This is a great overview, I hope Art does more like it.

I do not have enough experience to comment on how big Chrondra should be, but I am looking forward to seeing what you do here.

Ooh, thanks Seeker, I didn't realise/remember/know that that had gone up!  I didn't see Chrondra on there, but it's a good reference.  And, with the empty round frame, reminds me that I do need to do some more work on Crazy Woman Pass haha.

I'd love to see Chrondra illustrated once it's done.  It's been an ongoing headache for... what... six years now?  lol  So I am excited to have found some time to work on it again.  There should be plenty of pretty outlooks to draw - the Docks will be an interesting place, as will the fruit orchards with the view toward the walls, and the City Square with its statues and ancient architecture.

Although, if you're after something to draw, may I point out that my Marduran is still rather unillustrated?  Hehehe  Big Grin

Seven, by the date on your first post. Thanks for making me look like a fast developer. rolleyes

Great to see you back! I think your last period of activity ended around the time that I joined. By the way, I have long had a great affection for your gnarco toad picture, which Arti and I took the liberty to use in the Nepris Santhworld game. :)

Thanks Shabakuk!  It's good to be back.  I don't really create when there's no-one prodding me to do so (so if you need a character portrait for the RP side, let me know haha), so ti's nice to be doing something with my time again.  Fingers crossed I can keep it up (hence no triumphant "I RETURN PUNY MORTALS" post, as I find they are generally ill-fated  :P ).

First post updated with the contents of my word doc currently.

The description is coming along nicely, but as you can see I have a way to go in some areas.  There's a lot of notes and other people's posts in there, which I am trying to incorporate; just for an idea of waht I want to include.

Going to try to avoid writing more than 1-2 Corens (they are still a standard unit of measurement, right?  1 Coren - 20,000 words? lol ) so we'll see if that makes this finish-able.

Well, "the Coren" measurement I think had its main source in this strange bird he was writing, and I fear that one's still not up or even finished! Probably it was more intended for ornithologists or the book of records rather than the Compendium... ;) Hope that's not a bad omen, though...

Pfft, this has been underway since 2006, and among other things it lead to the entire Serphelorian tribe entry, so I think it's got a fair way to go before I despair.  I'm far more likely to despair of ever finishing that picture of the mountains... THAT is my bugbear!  lol
