This is my first attempt at an entry. Any comments about how I could make this better would be appreciated.

Bane Whip

Overview

The Bane Whip is a whip which is as tough on its user as it is on its opponent. Therefore those who have learned to use it have a healthy respect for it. Though underestimated because of its humble beginnings and mostly common material, it is an incredibly deadly weapon. The Bane Whip is able to break bones, slice through flesh, ensnare items and fling. It is a weapon that is used by various people, but seems to be a popular one among women since it is dependent on deftness and timing instead of strength. Invented by the Shendar, the whip has been altered many times as it spread over Santharia even as far as Aeruillin, but nothing compares to its original form.

Appearance- The Bane Whip in its original form consists of corded aka'pi leather, the hide of the brown kara or ráhaz-estár skin. Finely cut strands of leather or the ráhaz-estár skin are braided together; depending on the width of the whip the material will be braided over itself to produce a thicker thong. The Bane whip is made up of 4 parts- handle, thong, fall and popper. Outside the Ráhaz-Dath other materials are used like the hide of the Baneg.

The handle ranges from a palmspan to a fore. It usually has an inside of bone and the outside covered with braided aka'pi leather, kara hide or in unusual cases ráhaz-estár skin to keep its harmony. It leads into the thong, which is braid over itself. This part of the whip is the one which holds the balance and control of the whip.

At the end of the thong is the fall. The narrower this strap of material is the more damage it can cause when slicing.

Lastly is the popper at the tip of the fall that makes the loud cracking sound that can be used to give warning to those foolish enough to go against this weapon.

The leather or skin of the Bane whip is tightly woven together, but there are certain areas where strippers can be added. Bane whip strippers are the most popular change to the Bane whip's original form. They are small needles of metal that are imbedded into the thong and fall.

The aka'pi leather Bane whip is lighter and allows better movement. It has fast movements and is well used for all techniques, though does not possess the strength and added deadliness of the rare rahaz-estar skin.

The kara hide Bane whip is heavier making it a more clumsy whip and not as accurate. Using the kara skin the wielder will be unable to use cutting techniques since the material is too heavy and thick to allow cutting attacks. The whip is slower than the aka'pi and rahaz-estar. Yet, it is useful in that when it connects it is likely to be more efficient in crushing and leaving welts on its opponent.

The rahaz-estar skin Bane Whip is the most deadly as well as the most elegant. The material is still light, but very strong, causing its speed and accuracy to surpass that of aka'pi leather. Its cutting ability is more likely to cut through thicker material and it has the added strength to crush. This type of whip is hard to tame since it is one that is very sensitive to the harmony of the user. The rarity of the skin and the deadliness of the weapon makes it one that are mainly used by those who are true Shendar Masters, because it is more capable of killing its possessor if not handled correctly.

Usage- Where the Shendar use the whip mostly as a defensive weapon, except when hunting the ráhaz-estár, its offensive qualities are highly preferred outside the desert.

As a defensive weapon it ensnares opponents by wrapping the thong around the attacker and binding their movement.  The large crack made by the popper help to give off warning which animals usually recognize as a signal to stay away. This is still popular with many humans that wander in populations that are dominated by potentially dangerous wild animals. It can grasp and fling away possible dangerous items and even be used to block.

In actual fights the whip can be incredible dangerous. Its ability to crush bone and slice through skin makes it a formidable opponent. Because of its flexibility it is not something that can be chopped through by a mere swing of a sword since it conforms to what it goes against. One of the best resistances against it is armor since it is unable to slice through thick metal, though it can crush it to a degree and slice through thin metals.

Because of its flexibility and its reliance on skill instead of strength it is popular among many women and those who prefer a slight flashiness to their attacks. People who have little patience or endurance are unlikely to pursue the Bane whip since its tendency to backlash and damage its owner if not used properly can cause serious damage. It takes quite some time to completely master the Bane whip without causing damage to oneself.

Fighting Styles- The Bane Whip has several different movements to cause different results. The main aspects of the Bane Whip are timing, fluidity of motion and technique. Usually held in one hand the user moves the whip in one long fluid motion. It is always important to remember that the whip goes backwards before it goes forwards. The whip has a natural tendency to grab so the user must be careful of the whip grabbing at the users body in its backwards motion.

Cutting with the whip involves finding the natural loop in the whip. Once swinging, the user does a reversal against the loop which allows the user to cut. It is the fall that is the major part involved in the cutting. Cutting is also a point of accuracy and involves a hard swing, which does not necessary mean a swing based on strength, but more on technique.

There are several different variants of cutting, ensnaring and targeting, but unless users are masters of the Bane Whip they would be advised not to try making up techniques of their own.

The last aspect of the Bane Whip is the strippers that are used mostly by users that are trying to perform a more torturous aspect to their skills. Strippers shred the flesh and can be used to bleed an opponent to death. They are also widely used by assassins who tip the strippers in poison. Though, an assassin that uses a Bane whip is likely to only use it as a last resort since it's a bit too showy.

The Bane Whip if used improperly can seriously injure or even kill its possessor. Though cutting is rarely done by accident, the speed and strike of the whip will crush and crack bones or at the very least leave large bruises and welts. It is not a weapon a person would use incapacitated because once the timing is off the user is more likely to injure themselves instead of their opponent.

Origin/History- The origin of the Bane Whip begins with its cousin the Warning Whip. It was a way of herding the aka'pis and scaring off predators.

As lore has it a clever Shendar lad, discovered the potential of the whip as a weapon. Lengthening the thong he saw it as a better way to fight against the wild and dangerous animals of the Rahaz-dath, especially the ráhaz-estár. Unfortunately, while participating in practice of the whip he put too much force into the strike and the whip cracked open his skull.

After the Journeyon, a sister-mother of the family took some interest in the whip, going so far as to give it the name Bane. The sister-mother recognized in the Bane whip a sense of harmony, which could not be masterd by force. Eventually with this concept in mind she began the long trek of learning the Bane Whip, which was refined over centuries among the women of the tribe.

The result was a weapon for the matrilinear society that focused on a sense of harmony with their weapon, and put to use the strength of the female society by focusing on deftness, technique, patience and endurace. It became a primary weapon of the women in the society though most Shendar men took to it as well, for it was very productive in bringing down the ráhaz-estár.

Since the Bane whip became popular it was only a matter of time before it became also a way of recognizing status, being made both with leather and the rare to obtain ráhaz-estár skin. The ráhaz-estár skin was found to be the best material for the Bane whip, giving a better balance, making it lighter and more durable.

It was inevitable, that this fabulous weapon spread over the Rahaz-Dath. It is said, that the first who recognized its value were traders from Shan‘Thai who visited Strata. Later it was sold in Uderza and Varcopas as well, though very rarely those which contained some skin of the rahaz-estar. It was of course copied, baneg hides were used instead of the aka‘pi skins or the hide of the northern grassland boar. Though these whips reach never the elegance of a rahaz-estar whip, they are deadly enough.

Vylias, I generally dislike weapons and can't comment on them because I don't understand enough.... but I need of course some for my tribe as well (Shendar) and this one sounds very interesting. What I have read so far sounds good, you even have some history. My question would be, if you could date it back quite a bit (that story about the inventor would be more a lore then), so that my Shendar women could have it quite early? I think the men will use it as well, but I like it as a deadly weapon for non-warriors. I imagine it could even kill a rahaz-estar by strangling it and be a better means to kill it than a sword. The material could be altered to aka'pi leather or even with a part rock-snake skin, which might make it lighter, enhance it perhaps further...  (you know, only the best things for my tribe, I'm very protective  :lol)

What do you think?

That sounds great to me. The Shendar were my first choice to own the Bane Whip, but I thought the orgin would better fit with the Centourians. So maybe I can have the Shendar pick up the Bane Whip from the family of Cirth after his death and instead of the sister mastering it have it that the Shendar women mastered it and have also altered the material. So in the original form it was Baneg leather, but now is usually made with aka'pi leather. I'll have to do some research on the rock snake, because the whip needs to remain flexible.

I'll get to work on it right away and if you have any other suggestions I look forward to them.

Great!

Though you don't have to alter it so drastically. Just let migrate your whip from north to south and finally the shendar pic it up. OR - if it is already quite old, (12 millenia or more) it could well be used already by the Darians (not yet on the site, but in the dev-section) and it migrated with them south. As you like it. If it is not as old, it could have been used   in the Centotaurian area and a clever travelling Shendar saw it and recognisd its potential.

The snake skin is as flexible as you like it to have, it can be prepared to your wishes - as the armour :D

After reading more in detail about the Shendar I think I will switch completely to having it originated from them instead. I'll put up the revised version up soon and you can give me your opinion.

Bane Whip

First, I feel honoured, that  you choose now a Shendar origin. :)  . However, I‘m very picky about what I want them o use and how, so please forgive me, if I try to differ a bit about the use. I know I see the shendar too idealistic, but don‘t we need some idealism here? I‘ll explain better what I mean while looking through the entry. Please be aware, that I‘m no weapons expert and wn‘t look up all these new vocabulary - so if you used it wrongly, I wouldn‘t recognise it it ;)

Overview:

The Bane Whip is a whip which is as tough on its user as it is on its opponent. Therefore those who have learned to use it have a healthy respect for it. Though underestimated because of its humble beginnings and common material, it is an incredibly deadly weapon. The Bane Whip is able to break bones, slice through flesh, ensnare items and fling. It is a weapon that is used by various people, but seems to be a popular one among women since it is dependent on deftness and timing instead of strength.

You could already mention its origin here:

Invented by the Shendar (..surely only this type is invented by the Shendar, but don‘t know, how to formulate it), it spread soon to the north of Santharia as to the south till Aeruillin.

Outside the Ráhaz-Dath other material is used like f.e. the hide of the baneg

The handle ranges from a palmspan to a fore. It usually has an inside of bone and the outside covered with braided aka'pi leather or ráhaz-estár skin.It leads into the thong, which is braid over itself.

Bane whip strippers are small needles of metal that are imbedded in the thong and fall.

Usage- The Bane Whip is used as an offensive weapon in practice, but most users of it prefer to use it for defensive purposes. The large crack the popper makes  comes in handy when trying to scare off large animals as well as nervous opponents. A technique first used in the Shendar bonding ceremony to guide the aj into the direction of a fenced area.

No, a Shendar would never use a whip in directing an aj...too much respect for these animals, not even if it makes just noise, maybe the ex-pression „beat“ in the entry is wrong and should be replaced. I see it more like a gently guiding in a direction till the aj is in the fenced area. But it could well be used to herd the aka‘pis which I can describe as stubborn...
Maybe you should differ here between the common practise and the Shendar? let‘s see:

This is still popular with many humans that wander in populations that are dominated by potentially dangerous wild animals. The whips ability to ensnare its opponent by wrapping its thong around it has been popular in slave trade as well as a defensive maneuver.

Slavery is forbidden in santharia, so it mention it here surprises the reader, maybe do an extra paragraph

Where the Shendar use it mostly as a defensive weapon except when hunting the rahaz-estar, it offensive character is cherrished very much outside the desert as well, especially when used by men (:p )

As a  defensive weapon it comes handy in... (what are you doing actually when using it as a defensive weapon?

It is not a weapon a person would use incapacitated because once the timing is off the user is more likely to injure themselves instead of their opponent.

I‘m not sure about it, but can‘t you actually hit without cutting the skin if you do it right? That would add another dimension to offensive and defensive, that oif a threateneing weapon. I doubt, the shendar would have invented this, but surely the Thai‘rans with their slavery. A hit without a cut one time and the next time only the threatening would suffice. It could be used much better in this way than a knife or sword. you would have to add this above as well then.

Origin/History- The origin of the Bane Whip begins with its cousin the Bonding Whip, which was first invented by the Shendar as a way to guide the aj to a fenced area during a bonding ceremony. It was a way of herding the young aj without abusing its flesh by use of the loud sound that the popper produced. This was also helpful herding.

As already said above, I don‘t like this very much, I want to have a more gently approach  concerning  the bonding. But as a means to herd the aka‘pis it would be fine..

After the Journeyon, an mother-sister of the family took some interest in the whip, going so far as to give it the name Bane. Reaching the 'way of the warrior', an inner journal to second reality, the aunt recognize in the Bane whip a sense of harmony, which could not be used by forced. Eventually with this concept in mind she began her mastery of the Bane whip.

No, no, :lol  good idea, but I intent to go with this „way of the warrior „ into the direction of Castaneda‘s don Juan, so this would not fit. But  generally discovering the beauty and harmony in the (longer) whip, its advantage for women, because not strength, but skill is needed , is a good idea. Just elaborate this a bit. But it did take surely more than one woman , but several years if not centuries to perfect the style. ..

The result was a weapon for the matrilinear society that focused on a sense of harmony with their weapon, and put to use the strength of the female society by focusing on deftness, technique, patience and endurace. It become a primary weapon of the women in the society and very productive in bringing down the ráhaz-estár.

Since the Bane whip became popular it was only a matter of time before it became also a way of recognizing status, being made both with leather and the rare to obtain  ráhaz-estár skin. The ráhaz-estár skin was found to be the best material for the Bane whip, giving a better balance, making it lighter. and nearly uncuttable ???)

Eventually through trade between the Shen-Khas'si and outsiders and the travels of the Shen-D'auras, the Bane Whip became popular outside the Shendar tribes and the aka'pi leather is sometimes replaced with Baneg leather, which gives people that the misleading impression that the Bane whip is actually originally derived from Baneg and the Centoraurian.

Though mentioning the subtribes is always nice, it doesn‘t fit here - the D‘auras don‘t travel outside their territory, the shen-Kha‘si are the more visited (Uderza). But I think, that the men of the south in strata saw its potential even earlier than the northern tribes. why not do it like this:

It was inevitable, that this fabulous weapon spread over the Rahaz-Dath. It is said, that the first who recognised its value were traders from Shan‘Thai who visited Strata. Later it was sold in Uderza and Varcopas as well , though very rarely those which contained some skin of the rahaz-estar. It was of course copied, baneg hides were used instead of the aka‘pi skins or the hide of the northern grassland boar. Though these whips reach never the elegance of a rahaz-estar whip, they are deadly enough.

Thanks for wanting to help me out with the Shendar, but this tribe is already well developed, the next problem would be, that I have very special ideas about them. However, if you are fit with weapons - I need a nice sword for my proud men, but can't decide, which kind would fit. I always imagine of course the straight ones, but maybe a slichtly curved one would be better if sitting high on an aj? Or the dagger. In a lot of Jemen-books  is see this ornamental, very strongly curved daggers.. no idea if they are useful.. then I always imagined a non- weapon fighting style for them like aikido or Kung fu with a lot of philosphy behind it. Self-defense without weapons which doesn't do much damage to the oponent, but is very effective as well.. I'll never be able to write these things up...

and sorry for all the mistypings, but I'm called away just now..

*excited* I'll make the changes then. I can't wait to see how you use it.  So I'll remove it as used for the bonding cermony and use it strictly for the herding.

As to the cutting technique, it only happens when trying to do that specific technique so during every other time it is more likely to crush and crack. I'll clarify that in the changes.

My suggestion is that the Shendar might have come across the cutting technique during their mastery of the whip, but have banned its use in their tribe.

So is it ok if I just pluck that paragraph you wrote. It sounds perfect for the end.

*nods* I hope to work on several weapons so I wouldn't mind looking into weapons or a fighting style. I think instead of a sword maybe a bare handed fighting style would be better. It doesn't seem that the Shendar would use weapons from your explanation, so something similar to aikido.  I'll start on the changes right away.

**edit: changes have been made. Hope you like *smiles*

Bane Whip

The rahaz-estar skin whip is not common :)

The brown kara is one of the three pigs of the desert I need to develop still. They will be quite big pigs roaming the savanna (floodplains) in big herds, being a quite dangerous animla if encountered in a pack. I thought they could have a tougher hide than the aka‘pis. Maybe you could add a small paragraph about the different characteristics of the Shendar whips? Maybe the aka‘pi one is quite light, more for making noise and herding these animals, not so heavy. The kara one is heavier, cuts more easily. Hurts more, is more painful? The rahaz-estar one is the really dealy one, weight inbetween, but still fairly light, longer? This is the one which is when used with accuracy, really deadly but at the same time the best tool - you can play with it and do no damage, but you can hurt as well, not with the brute force of the kara whip, but with the deadly elegance of the snake. It is the one which cannot be cut by a sword. before you can braid it, the skin has to be cut, but this is only possible, when treated like the armour... If you like, then I write this part up..  ...There could be varieties, where the snake skin is mixed with the other leather types.

The handle ranges from a palmspan to a fore. It usually has an inside of bone and the outside covered with braided aka'pi leather or ráhaz-estár skin. It leads into the thong, which is braid over itself. This part of the whip is the one which holds the balance and control of the whip.
The snake skin is something very special and rare, so the handle might be not of this material? For it is not really necessary - maybe only exceptionally,

The sister-mother recognized in the Bane whip a sense of harmony, which could not be masterd by force  .

It became   a primary weapon of the women in the society , though most Shendar men took to it as well, for it was  very productive in bringing down the ráhaz-estár.

I don‘t want my men to be deprived of this weapon - they need their sword for prestice still, but we don‘t want to be too possessive ;)

This is a very nice entry, a weapon to my liking - if we need weapons at all (well we do) . I thought the sling would be great, but this one is eaven greater and fits so well! Thank you, Vylias! :hug

(I hope you won‘t me find in my garden trying out a primitive kind of whip and hurting my head! :lol  )

To your question about swords - I think the men and female warriors will need one - and if it is just to compete with the outside tribes . What is a man there without sword? Though even a Shendar warrior will prefer the whip to fight with , if it is not a case of honour. Well, you get what I mean?

Hmm- since your character is a Shendar ( I assume) and probably greatly proficent, you can probably do whatever fighting style you wish. Since I said that there are many styles to is. So go right ahead. As long as its realistic I don't mind. I want to see. Can I have a link??

I will go and make those changes to the whip. Then I guess its finished. So how do I submit it after I make the changes?

The post is edited with the description of the different materials effects on the whip. Since the whip's deadliness is part of its speed I changed a little your suggestions with the kara. Cutting is also completelyu bassed on lightness and speed so I changed that as well.

Hope you like. *so excited* I'm really glad I could be useful. Can't wait to see your post.

Great, finished, set the blue arrow!

Well, I think I have to study how to use a whip properly - and take just one ;)

I've done my first post in the heart, but I'm always bad in describing fighting scenes.. here

Tell me, what I'm doing wrong and I edit!

How would you take an rahaz-estar down which is about to attack somebody near you?Just strangling it?(I need that for my persons bio)
