the Frost Dragon
Basic Overview
Among the smallest and least intelligent of dragonkind, Frost Dragons are merely feral predators.  The snowy faces of these wintery beasts show more ferocity rather than the slyness of their more powerful kin.  The Frost Dragon has scales as white as powdered snow, and their scales are large, like plates of armor.  Their paws are extremely padded, allowing them to walk on sheets of ice with the greatest of ease.

Appearance
Frost Dragons are so named for their "frosted glass" appearance. Colouring varies from dragon to dragon, mostly in pale shades of blue, indigo, and off-white. Very few have the brown or black scale colouring of Horned Dragons. The glass-like look is constant in all of their species, as are the patterns on their backs - a trait they share with their snake relatives. These patterns are distinctive to each Dragon, making each one unique and recognizable.

The long, agile bodies of Frost Dragons represent a very elegant snake-like form of dragonkind. Their enormous wings look like fragile sheets of ice, but in truth are strong, hard wings with which male Frost Dragons can propell themselves through the air with speed and agility. Female Frost Dragons do very little, if any, flying. Instead, they conserve their skill and energy for Ice Magic, which male Frost Dragons are incapable of using.

Adult Frost Dragons can reach a lenth of up to 11, including a very long tail, and reach a wingspan of up to 13 peds.

Territory
In general Frost Dragons can only be found at northern regions in the world of Aér'aí'chán where chill winds and icy conditions provide the essentials for their nature. It is said that hundreds of Frost Dragons inhabitate the mountains of Eternal Ice at the Dark Lands of CYHALLOI far to the north, where the world of Aér'ai'chán finds its end. However, a small amount of this species also exists at the SARVONIAN continent, mainly at the TANDALA mountains which are separating the lands of the BARBARIANS from Santharian territory. It seems obvious that humans very seldom encounter these creatures as the regions where these dragons live in are very inhospitable and dangerous. Furthermore Frost Dragons very seldom leave their cool territories, not even for hunting reasons, and mainly keep to themselves. When battling their quickness in combination with the brutal force of their claws are their most effective weapons.

Special Abilities
Frost Dragons have many abilities, most giving the dragon an edge in battle.  First and foremost, it can breathe pure ice from its mouth.  Much like a stream of fire, only with cold.  The dragon also can cling to any surface, as long as its icy.  Frost Dragons may create a wall of ice, but doesn’t that often, due to the amount of energy it requires. The dragon can also create a fog that freezes anything it touches.  It is immune to the effects of this spell due to its pads.

Diet
Frost Dragons will eat almost anything.  However, they are very picky about how their food is prepared, and will only consume food that has been frozen.  Usually the Frost Dragon will finish off its prey with its breath of cold so that it can devour it while its still stiff and frigid.  The Frost Dragon will bury any other kills in snowbanks until they are frozen to the dragon’s content.

Mating
Frost Dragons only come together and tolerate one another in order to mate.  Even then, there is no set time or ritual.  However, a female generally is in heat during the winter.  If a male and female cross paths during that time, the two will begin to ‘play.’  Although ‘playing’ can seem quite virulent, it is never to the death, and is actually quite affectionate, much like how cats roughhouse.  If the male can overpower the female, then the male will mount her, tails intertwined.  If the male cannot overpower the female (a rarity, but not unheard of), the female will dismiss the male and fly off.

Once the male impregnates the female, the male leaves, entrusting the female with the care of the children for the first two years of their life.  The female carries the babies for about six months, then lays a batch of eggs, usually between 3-5 eggs.  Once the two years are over, the mother leaves the babies to fend for themselves.  Oftentimes the babies will stick together and cooperate for another year or so before going their separate ways.

Anything else
Frost Dragons tend to like jewels.  Especially diamonds.  Depending on how many and the size of the jewels, some Frost Dragons may allow some prey to go, granted they pay a hefty price of course.

The most famous Frost Dragon ever known to humanoids in Santharian lands was KEHLEMIN at the Tandala, who was slewn by the elf ARBETHANDER at 367 b.S.

Okay, made the edits.  Hope I didn't miss anything!  Pls lemmee know if I did! ^_^

ACK!!! Apparently there already is appearance for Frost Dragons.  Habitat/territory too.  I'll omit that from my post, and edit the rest, okay?  I'll make sure to add MUCH more detail!!! ^_^

Oh well... I guess you've seen the existing entry on the Frost Dragons, Kendo? The entry is very old, not according to our scheme and needs rework, that's why it is on our "things which should be re-vamped" list. Please also make sure to integrate what is on the site concerning the Frost Dragon into your entry (maybe there are some adjustments necessary now; the picture e.g. suggests severe fights between two male frost dragons over a female, so this all should be integrated). I will then take the complete entry here and prepare it, once it is approved.

Yes I did see the existing entry.  That's why I edited out the appearance of the dragon.  As for the mating, there wasn't so much as a sentence of info for it.  I'm not saying that two Frost Dragons won't fight over a female, but it's uncommon considering that three dragons cross paths at the same time.  We could keep the pic there, or I could draw one myself.  It's up to you, I don't see where it's said that the dragons won't fight over a female, just that it's rare.  Anyways, if there's anything that needs editing, please tell me!  I don't mind if everything's wrong, but I'm going to need to know if I'm to improve the entry, right?

How come nobody's responding to the poor lil' Frost Dragon?  You guys say that it needs working on, and then when I work on it, you completely ignore it!!! >.<  I can understand if you think it's fine, but then how come it hasn't been approved of yet?  Pls tell me!  Because otherwise this could seriously get discouraging >.<

Ok, dear, hold your horses....or should I say dragons...

First of all, it's not 'you guys', it's just me at the moment.  And I'm currently modding the Herbarium formally, the Bestiary pro tem, and the Library informally.  Not to mention commenting elsewhere and creating my own entries.  At this point I log on to the Dream two to three times daily just to keep up with that amount of work.

Give a busy bard a break, eh?

Second of all, the Bestiary modship did just change over, and if you've only just moved the Frostie up to the top of the pile, I'll only just have noticed it.  Thanks for bringing it to my attention!  As I told Rayne, I would begin working on the beast edits as of the 3rd.

Third, one edit does not an automatic approval make, as experienced members have come to expect... ;)   Sometimes a number of reworks are necessary, and you need to leave time for other members besides mods to comment on your first edit or rework.  Your entry (not the Frost Dragon specifically)  will always affect a number of areas, and if I'm too hasty in approving it, there will be contradictions or missing connections.  So rest assured, Kendo:  I have seen it, I am reading it over in detail, and a comment on the entry will follow before the end of the week.

Hope that answers your questions, and also encourages you!

Regards from the you'll-have-to-save-the-dragon-from-this-maiden-bard,
Judith

I hope I didn't offend you, Judith.  What I meant by "getting discouraging" was I've tried making about 3 beasts now, and there's always been one reason or another, and no matter what I did, it never got approved.  (The Remusian War-Horse, the Tresh'Aal, and the Gresh'Laa).  >.<  I got really far w/the War-Horse, too, until it was decided that it wasn't needed... ugh...

Anyways, I understand how much work is required by you, Judith.  I must say it's a handfull.  I couldn't do your job if I was paid $3 million, and if I tried... >.< Anyways, I made my previous post because I noticed that you replied to my Pseudodragon and many of other posts, all of which were below the Frost Dragon.  I was just curious as to why/how it was overlooked.  That's all.  Also... I apologize in advance if I'm ever a little short.  In the game of Poker that is life, I haven't been dealt the greatest hand lately.  So, again, I'm very sorry if I'm rude or jumpy or impatient... pls bear with me... >.<

BTW, I know all too well that one edit doesn't make the cut.  To be honest, I'd be ecstatic if good ol' Frostie was approved after only 10!  ^_^"  Oh, and if you're wondering, I'm Koji Maelstrom.... just forgot the password.. if you don't believe me, you may ask Rayne and Timeras.  They'll confirm it.  (If Rayne remembers that far back, that is... no offense, Rayne!!!)

Patience is a virtue!

My Uncil has been up for a week and has only gotten two responces, one of which is my own. The oysters entry I did has been up since the 30th and hasn't gotten any responces, and some things I have in the Library have been there for a week without approval. Things don't move extremely quickly here, but when things do go up on the site, they're done well and thoroughly.

Poor Mommy-Judith has so much work to do, too! You can't really expect her to magically have everything corrected and completely re-done. Give her time, and it'll get there. It helps if your entry is complete as it can possibly be before you put it up. It'll make a lot less work for our poor over-worked Bard. You might read over the entry and see what you can add to it. Be vividly descriptive, add in anything that you think should be related to your creature. Be specific as possible. Things will move a lot quicker.

Just some advice from the little elf!

I know patience is a virtue, but at this moment I have none... ~_~  But I'm working on it... Anywho's, the reason the territory/habitat and appearance sections are gone is because they've already been taken care of.  And I understand how much work Miss Judy (inside joke, won't make it again ^_^") must do everyday.  Was just wondering how the Frostie could go from top to about ten slots down in a day, and then when it's brought back up, ppl seem to overlook it, that's all... oh well... *shrugs*

Take your time, Judsters!!! ^_^"  Just lemmee know if there's something I need work on!! ^_^

OK, Kendo, I'll make you a deal.

I like to see the WHOLE entry before I approve it, and I usually do an all-over holistic edit, with proof-reading, spell-checking, sentence structure and the rest, as a final way of editing the submission.

I like what you've got at the moment, but I can't cross-check when pieces are in various places. So......

If you could collect everything and put it in the approved order as one complete entry, then I will go over it top to toe (should that be crest to claw?) and get it into update-ready format before the end of the week.

Fair enough?  Then this little guy can crawl into his place in the Compendium, and you can move on to your next project!

*laughs* I think I'm catching your drift.  You want me to collect ALL the data on Frostie (I think that's gonna be his nickname from now on ^_^) and put it into one edited post, ne?  Well, why not?  Anyways, the reason why I took out the appearance and territory/habitat in the first place was because it was already taken care of *points to Frostie entry in Bestiary* >.<

Oh well's.  Here ya go, Judster.  All done and taken care of!

OK - I did a Master Edit, but I also changed some significant details because they weren't consistent.  For example, if Frosties aren't very intelligent and rarely leave their own grounds, there is not much reason for them to do battle with other dragons.  So their special abilities should be focused towards getting prey, especially in the frozen wastes where there won't be a lot of other animals.   Also, you say that the males fly but the females do magic.  A nice touch, so I altered the special abilities to reflect that.  Dark colours won't work in a light environment for a predator - fixed that detail - and a few other things.

Hope you agree with my reasons for making the changes!  Please feel free to comment or to alter the beastie in some other direction if that clashes with your vision.

  Frost Dragon
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Basic Overview

Among the smallest and least intelligent of dragonkind, Frost Dragons are merely feral predators. The snowy faces of these wintery beasts show more ferocity rather than the slyness of their more powerful kin. The Frost Dragon has large, plated scales in various pale shades and prefers cold, icy climates.

Appearance

Frost Dragons are so named for their "frosted glass" appearance. Colouring varies from dragon to dragon, mostly in pale shades of blue, lavender, and silvery-white.  Other colours can occur, such as a light icy green or shimmering pale pink, but the brown or black scale colouring of Horned Dragons is never found on these northern predators.

The glass-like look is a characteristic of this species,  as are the patterns on their backs - a trait they share with their snake relatives. These patterns are distinctive to each dragon, making each one unique and recognizable, should a human observer want to get that close.

The long, agile bodies of Frost Dragons represent a very elegant snake-like form of dragonkind. Their enormous wings look like fragile sheets of ice, but in truth are strong, hard wings with which male Frost Dragons can propel themselves through the air with speed and agility. Female Frost Dragons do very little, if any, flying. Instead, they conserve their skill and energy for simple Ice Magic, which male Frost Dragons are incapable of using.

They have the classic powerfully-muscled back legs which thrust off to spring on prey, and the more agile front legs which can be used to hold and manipulate their food. Their paws are extremely wide in proportion, and padded, allowing them to walk on sheets of ice with the greatest of ease. Short, slightly curved claws act as pitons which dig in to even the most slippery of surfaces and allow them to cling to the faces of bergs.

Adult Frost Dragons can reach a length of up to 11 peds, including a very long tail, and reach a wingspan of up to 13 peds.

Territory

In general Frost Dragons can only be found in northern regions in the world of Aér'aí'chán,  where chill winds and icy conditions provide the essentials for their nature. It is said that hundreds of Frost Dragons inhabitate the mountains of Eternal Ice at the Dark Lands of CYHALLOI far to the north, where Sorren comes to an end.   However, a small amount of this species also exists on the SARVONIAN continent, mainly at the TANDALA mountains which separate the lands of the BARBARIANS from Santharian territory.

It seems obvious that humans very seldom encounter these creatures, as the regions where these dragons live in are very inhospitable and dangerous. Furthermore Frost Dragons very seldom leave their cool territories, not even for hunting reasons, and mainly keep to themselves. When battling they use the snaky thrusts of their long heads and their short claw spikes as effective weapons.

Special Abilities

Frost Dragons have a number of abilities, most used to help them obtain food.   First and foremost, they can breathe a stream of super-cooled moist air from their mouths, which immediately solidifies into pure ice.   Their piton-like claws enable them to cling to any icy or slick surface with ease.  Female Frost Dragons who can manipulate ice magic may create a wall of ice, but this requires a lot of energy and concentration, so is not done often.  The females can also call up fogs that bewilder and numb anything caught within the sphere of the mist.   They are immune to the effects of their own spells, and can break through ice that forms on them naturally.

Diet

Frost Dragons will eat almost anything. However, they are very picky about how their food is prepared, and will only consume food that has been frozen. Usually the Frost Dragon will finish off its prey with its Ice Breath so that it can devour it while it's still stiff and frigid. The Frost Dragon will bury any other kills in snowbanks until they are frozen to the dragon’s satisfaction.

Mating

Frost Dragons only come together and tolerate one another's company in order to mate. Even then, there is no set time or ritual. However, a female generally is 'in heat' during the winter. If a male and female cross paths during that time, the two will begin to ‘play.’ Although ‘playing’ can seem vicious and aggressive, it is never to the death, and is actually quite affectionate, much like how cats roughhouse. If the male can overpower the female, then the male will mount her, tails intertwined. If the male cannot overpower the female (a rarity, but not unheard of), the female will dismiss the male and fly off, one of the few times in her life where she takes to the air.

Once the male impregnates the female, the male leaves, entrusting the female with the care of the children for the first two years of their life. The female carries the babies for about six months, then lays a batch of eggs, usually between 3-5 eggs. She creates a crude 'nest' from ice blocks, which she then fuses together with her breath to make a high-walled fortress.  She can easily scale the sheer sides with her well-developed claw-spikes, but other predators, and the babies, cannot.

While the eggs 'incubate' in their frozen setting, the mother spends time hunting for food, bringing back the iced corpses, and chipping them into small slivers of frozen meat for the babies.  After they hatch, she feeds them with the meat, brings back fog-stunned animals for them to practice hunting on, and demonstrates the principles of simple ice magic to the females in the litter.  Once the two years are over, the mother leaves the babies to fend for themselves. Oftentimes the babies will stick together and cooperate for another year or so before going their separate ways.

Legends, Myths and Stories

Frost Dragons are claimed to like jewels, especially diamonds. If a sentient prey happens to be carrying such wealth, it is said that they may be able to bargain for their lives with their dragon captor.  It is also rumoured that Frost Dragons make great nests of diamonds, although of all the foolish fortune-hunters who have braved the inhospitable ice wastes to prove it, none have returned.

The most famous Frost Dragon ever known to humanoids in Santharian lands was KEHLEMIN at the Tandala, who was slewn by the elf ARBETHANDER at 367 b.S.

You know, somehow I'm missing a complete section here... Where's Habitat/Behaviour? ;)

Well I guess there would be a couple inconsistencies.  The reason is, I left the appearance and habitat/behaviour from the original post.  I'm okay with all the edits you've made Judster!!! ^_^  Just glad that one of my works finally got approved!!! *does a little dance*

and Arty, the habitat/behaviour SHOULD be in there... >.<
